In our family, 100,000 miles is barely broken in! Ma was 60 when she bought Arthur. He was her birthday present to herself. In 25 years, she ran him up to just shy of 200,000 miles. In the last 5 years, I have brought him up to roughly 380,000 miles, and still driving beautifully. I love seeing older, high mileage cars well cared for.

Testify brother, I have 143000 miles on my Skoda Fabia. The only thing that doesn't work is medium wave radio, for some reason, but I can live with that. Look after your car, don't skimp on regular services and most modern motors will go on and on. Something very satisfying about driving an old motor where everything works.... just think of the thousands you would burn on a new car. That is the gospel of the car shrewdie!

My 2004 VW Golf recently rolled over 100,000. Low mileage considering its six years older than yours. Everything works in mine too, some of the plastics are wearing (typical soft peel VW issues) but mechanically all works well. Previous owner lived in Dulwich so I can presume its had a lot of stop/start traffic. Mine must've aged more than yours considering the MK4 debuted in the late 90's. I use Bosch wipers on mine and change them every 20,000 mile service. Wipers are the same on my Golf, just put on at an angle, turn around and click in. Easy peasy. I really do adore red interiors, especially in US cars from the 80's and 90's. Your Mercedes is running lovely and looks really nice. The W204 generation cars do seem very affordable in this day and age, certainly better than their predecessor. I think Mercedes did improve around 2005/2006 in terms of quality.

They had to, they cut alot of corners previously and really came back hard with these, and they are incredible value - I compared an early W205 in identical spec to this when I bought it and it was double the price, but I like the look of these more. I think a few German brands went for that wiper, not seen it before but what a doddle! UV light was always a dashboard killer, not sure how VW messed up with that so late on

My facelift C250 had its gearbox oil changed but it’s not a quick and cheap job, needs to be done at 50 deg Celsius to get the level right, which is why MB dealer quoted me best part of £600 but that’s the 7 speed auto! Changing the rear discs can be tricky, the inner of the disc barrel is where the handbrake shoes press, so they form a lip which stops the disc popping off easy. As for coilovers, mines the AMG sport plus, so lowered as standard, and I catch speed bumps on occasion.

Apparently there is an alloy wheel treatment you can get in motorbike shops that stops brake dust sticking to alloy wheels in the first place, which sounds like a pretty good idea with you doing a lot of miles in the Merc as it should stop the dust eating into the alloy and causing corrosion, especially in the back of the wheel that you can't really get to when they're on the car... It's worth saying that you shouldn't just force the brake fluid from the caliper back up to the master cylinder when retracting the pistons on vehicles with ABS as the back flow of fluid through the ABS pump can break it and cause the ABS to fail out. ABS pumps tend to vary from rather expensive to real arm-and-a-leg territory so if you can avoid having to replace one then it makes sense, especially being as the vast majority are special order items not held in stock so you'd be waiting with the car off the road for anything from a week to a few months. In most cases the approved technique is to loosen the bleed nipple before retracting the piston, therefore allowing the brake fluid to drain into a suitable container, and to top up the master cylinder with fresh fluid when the job is complete...
@furiousdriving
@furiousdriving 4 жыл бұрын
Good car wax helps alot stopping brake dust bonding. I read 2 guides to the W204 brakes and both said to just push them pistons in so it should be OK

It burnt an exhaust valve out at 186k, so I stuck a second hand cylinder head on it along with new head gasket and timing belt (cost me less than £150 for parts) and it ran perfectly again! But I then sold it. However it's still driving around Sussex somewhere now on 200k miles. If something with as poor a reputation as my old MG can do 200k miles, then 100k I expect to be just run in on your diesel Mercedes 😁. The 100'000 mile thing is strange (an Iam guilty of using it as a yard stick in the past) However ,during this lockdown,, we decided to buy a " cheap petrol car" incase my job and company car go t**s up. 😭 So we have bought a 2013 fiesta titanium ecoboost. 999cc 3 cylinders turbo petrol with 108'000 miles on it ,for £3'700.. 1 owner from new,(with the odd scratch on most panels to prove it) FSH for what it's worth and thanks to the gov.mot checker it's easy to see it's mot history. Mine has had advisories only for tyres and front lower suspension bush (apparently a known fiesta weakness,and the new arms are £50 for both sides and a couple of hours on the drive,with a £25 wheel alignment check afterwards) Cambelt is due at 150'000 ,and if I close my eyes and rev it,it sounds like a mini V6 or sewing machine blending on your ears. £0 road tax. So not quite bangernomics,but certainly slot of modenish car for my buck. And with 123bhp and a light car,she can pull up her skirt and run when required (just missing a 6th gear imho) So we get, climate control,DAB,heated front screen,cruise control,hill start assist,auto wipers/lights,auto dimming rear mirror and a bronze pulse colour 😎😀

Has the gearbox oil ever been changed before? I changed mine at 180,000kms (110,000 miles) and about 5000kms after the auto started to slip, and then bam gearbox overheated and failed. If i had my time again. I wouldn't do it to a car that had never been changed with such high kms. 60,000 miles yes. 100,000 miles no.

Don't "warm up the engine" before driving off. Turn it on, and after 5 seconds you are good to go. Just don't rev it over 3.000 rpm until it gets to the operating temperature. Use API SN or SN Plus rated full synthetic oil and change it every 5.000 miles. It will last...

Still think folk buy Mercs just for the badging - or what the badging REPRESENTS (owner of 1997 W202 C230 @ 357,000km and a 1997 BMW e39 540i @ 304,000 km)...... so THERE (( 1997 is post OBD2 and PRE micro-processing and automation excess))

Some do. I bought it because the W204 is a really tough car, a high point for Mercedes. But there are many who buy the badge first, hence the 3 Series outselling the Mondeo
