The big question is the Russian response to another Ukrainian attack on a Critical Russian Over the Horizon radar that protects the Russian Federation from a nuclear attack. Especially as this facility had no connection to the Ukrainian conflict. 2020 Russian military doctrine stated that attacking these facilities authorises a potential nuclear response.

It has a relevance to the war, since it’s also capable to detect Ukrainian jets. So it presumably a preparation measurement for their airforce. Especially they are awaiting F16 this year. UA's efforts to "take out the Black Sea navy" or destroy Russian industry with the help of drones are kinda like NZ Germany trying to turn WW2 around in the summer of 1944 with the V1 rockets...if we imagine that those strikes (in '44) had been only a tenth of the number that were really fired. A nuisance but with little real impact on the war as such. Eastern Europe is a 100% land-based theatre of war. The allied navies played no active fighting or strategic role for the fighting in eastern and central Europe during the last nine months of WW2, it was all about heavy ground war (and air raids to take out German assets). Ground war against a peer adversary is something the US has more or less dropped from their training in favour of the far more glamorous topic of air war. Over the last fifty years, just about the only enemies the US fights with its *own* army are banana republics, local dictators with funky uniforms and men in sandals with no real ability to hit back.

You have to know what your enemy has, where it's located, and when it's moving. Then when you see signs it's happening you send something their way to prevent it. Ukraine does have and has had the ability to send long range drones into Russia to hit airfields. They just don't. Russia doesn't have that many working aircraft and even lesser close to the front lines. Ukraine is using events like these to beg for more fancier resources than what they currently have. It's very stupid and it's costing them a lot.
@bobjones-bt9bh

nah. you have to research the doctrine of attritional warfare. it uses a broad front strategy with shallow attacks to cause a cascading collapse as the defender has their reserves attritted and can no longer effectively rotate any reserves, because they are depleted. This is taking a long time because FPVs are a new mode of warfare and they are cheap, effective against armor moves, and prolific. These "new fronts" are part of the attrition strategy. You are thinking that this is a maneuver warfare conflict- it is not. Maneuver warfare in this conflict will get your men and materiel wiped out quickly. NATO's style of war is irrelevant and was always predicated on the opponent not having effective air power, much less having air superiority. A NATO mass combined arms op would get smashed by a wall of FPVs and drone fire corrected artillery.

it appears that ukraine is trying to keep their experienced semi professional solider alive for as long as possible, so they are sending newly grafted civilian to the front right away. these fresh troops are used as baits to spot russian fire positions, and then the real ukraine soliders will launch FPV drones from behind to try to hurt the russians. i believe ukraine still have significant combat capable forces they are keeping. we can know that from the lack of destruction reports of vehicles like CV90 and leopard 1, ukraine received quite a lot of these vehicles but these vehicles were rarely dsetroyed, because they were not used at all, which suggest that the units that operate these vehicles are not active. i think many of these units are hiding in the back, pointing their gun to their fellow civilian "soldiers" who them just drafted 2 days ago, and force them to charge the russians and to attract and take russian fire for them. they take too long to train, take too much money to equip, might as well be used as bait. this is the way they think. i am sorry for the ukraine soldiers who dont want to be there. they have to fight the russians, fight the nazis in the ukraine army, fight zelensky...im sure there are ways the nazis are stopping them from surrendering to the russians.

The problem with the air defense story is that it fails to consider the utility of aerial bombs as opposed to artillery in Kharkiv (BTW, spellcheck still says it's "Kharkov" XD). The northern front is much more open (less urbanized) than Donbass and lacks the kinds of fortifications that necessitated the use of aerial bombs in the first place. Getting more air defenses into the region may help a little, but I doubt that it'll have the kind of effect that it would have had elsewhere.

Meanwhile we see Russia switch from that way of thinking to a more combined arms and they are using drones to spot the enemy. FPV/Arty to hit UA positions. FAB's to support. Before the move tanks and men forward.... and they are taking ground under the combined assault.

Using the 20km frontage rule for a division on the defensive the Russian Ground Forces would need 2 Army Groups, 4 Armies, 16 Corps, and 64 Divisions to cover the 1200 km front with adequate flexibility, secondary and reserve positions. Currently as best as I have been able to determine the Russian Army consists in total of 14 divisions plus supplementary Airborne & Marine units, perhaps 18-20 divisions in total. Of course with the poor practice of 'rotation' instead of scheduled individual leave the force inside Ukraine would be much less. 'Marshall' Putin, Ritter etc. seem confused by these facts.

Patriot & THAAD are pretty decent, but the US is not ideally equipped to provide air defense. The primary method of air defense for the US is air-dominance. But they can't really magically make Ukraine have 500 expert pilots, and they won't give them the latest fighter aircraft tech where there's strong possibilities of advanced tech falling into unwanted hands.

And if Ukraine had all the AD in the world, it doesnt change the fact there ground forces are in a terrible state. AD doesnt protect against Arty and drones and a huge manpower and skill gulf. The west invested in Airpower and neglected AD, this is now very, very apparent.

@@basilhanas8453 AIM-120 has a range of 105-160 km. Assuming Ukraine takes out enough of Russia's long range air defense with ATACMS, a Ukrainian F16 could safely hit a glide bomb platform without coming into range of surface attack. The only question is whether Russia can defeat the F16s with air to air engagements, which remains to be seen.

Russia doesnt like its enemies near its borders due to past traumas of western invasions like Napoleon, Poland-Lithuania, Crimean Alliance, and Hitler. Its a serious security issue Ukraine is imposing in the recent years. Also the arming of Ukraine is troubling, not to mention the Nat-zi ideology prevalent within the Kiev regime, namely the Azov, poses a serious ideological threat that originated from Bandera since WW2. This war is complex, not a good and evil story that tries to demonize Russia as a simple bad guy as propagated for the past 5 decades and so until now.

@@GracefulBanananot to mention the constant erosion of trust and good will by the west to not expand an inch east with their NATO military memberships. a lot of pro-russian commentators observed that putin was rather too patient to act and probe the situation with peaceful means. but the west was constantly breaking agreements like the minsk which ukraine wont implement and expanding their alliance which eventually forced putin to launch a military operation to thwart the growing threat of NATO. that if left unchecked, the war would definitely still happen in the future with ukraine much stronger that it was when the war broke out during 2022. so russia decided to act fast and not wait until ukraine and NATO can militarize further. that is why Putin announced one of his key objectives was to de-militarize ukraine but unfortunately due to NATO intervention and aid packages, i think Russia will obliterate ukraine at this point

The Russians have only 30K soldiers in Kharkiv area, with only 10K in the offensive (very very small for a large area), being outnumbered by the Ukrainians soldiers there by 5-1. The difference is the Russian soldiers there are well trained veterans and rely on their firepower advantage. While the Ukrainians are newly conscripted civilians. The reason the Russians only use very few soldiers in the offensive is they realized because of NATO satellite pictures and aerial reconnaissance it’s very easy to discover large concentrations of soldiers and weapons, which can easily be targeted by long range ATACM missiles or long range Drones. So what the Russians did is turn the tables. They send a small army in the North and move around to capture villages nearby. This causes the Western backers to force the Ukrainian Army to send lot’s of reinforcements in order to stop the Russian advance because it’ll look bad in the Foriegn media. This is exactly what the Russians wanted. The Ukrainians sent 7 Battalions up north and joined together in area. A perfect target shoot. That’s what the multiple Russian FABs are now doing. The Idea of Blitzkrieg or Fast Maneuver is for now dead. All because of Drones and real-time Satellite imagery, since the main ingredient of a Blitzkrieg is "Secrecy" and "Concentration of Huge Forces in one area". Things a modern Army cannot do now. The quick military maneuver that the US did in Iraq or Afghanistan only works because the enemy is "Blind, since they had no good reconnaissance or satellite" and "Unable to strike a large grouped force with sophisticated weapon". Basically a 3rd world backwater country. Ukraine before the war has the biggest standing army and the most tanks and jets in Western Europe. Far outnumbered the Germans or the British military. Plus they have US high-tech surveillance technology and the most high end weapons brought to them by NATO and US. This war would end like WW1. Long drawn out Trench war and Slow maneuver, until the enemy finally cracks in the end and surrender.

You keep talking about Ukraine needing more weapons systems and ordnance, who is going to operate these systems and muscle the ordnance? Lets say the supply chain from NATO to Ukraine was flawless, who inside the country is trained to supply, maintain or operate everything? Who pots new tires on the F16, who reloads the Patriot System, who greases the Abrams ? Ukraine can't do 9 week squad training but if they had this game changing hard hitting new weapon it can turn everything around.
@jasonhoerner9954

Some countries are considering help with training and logistics -- non combat troops. It's likely that long term maintenance on F16s will happen out of country (similar to how tanks have been repaired in other countries), and only routine maintenance will happen on Ukrainian soil, which requires less training and supplies.
