Throwback to the offseason when Troy Watson (Blue Jays MiLB) and Bradford Webb (Free Agent) threw a velo off against each other. How hard are you throwing in bullpens vs in games?

What goes into why these guys are not in a rotation? I feel like it's a question that probably doesn't have just one answer. When you have velo up to 100 MPH, does the club want them to gain more movement or control? Is it more of an off speed pitch? When you have someone come in like this with as much talent as they have, what do you as instructors work on in sessions?

This isn't the year 2000 anymore. Throwing in the high 90s is far more common than it used to be. So it could be any number of factors, but those factors are driven by more competition. You can't just throw 98 and be picked up anymore. You have to throw 98 and have good movement, good accuracy, good perceived velo, etc. Guys can lack in categories as long as they make up for the deficit in other ways, but there are far more guys out there today who have it all. Look how hard this guy is working to throw 95. The other guy exerts less effort and gets more velo. There are guys who look far more relaxed than that dude and they throw 96-99.

Besides, most of those pitches thrown, weren't strikes. I don't care how hard you throw, if you don't throw strikes you're useless until you can. In another year, they'll both need "The Tommy."
@manager4409
@manager4409 2 ай бұрын
you only see a few pitches. its possible they can't really maintain it for several innings and locate effectively. It's like lifting weights, your max-out number isn't what you normally do. His average fastball could be 4mph slower than what you see here, plus maybe he can't throw strikes worth a shit

Do you mind answering these quick questions guys? ..... How long are your/those guy's arms and how long are their fingers or how big are their hands? Just wondering if arm length and and finger/hand length is key to be able to throw that fast and if I'm screwed with bad genetics.
@treadathletics
@treadathletics 3 ай бұрын
Arm length is part of it; the rest really isn't going to affect it that much. If you're 5'10 with a 6'3 wing span, that's definitely better than a 6'3 guy with a 5'8 wingspan.
@manager4409
@manager4409 2 ай бұрын
finger size does affect the movement you can get. for example pedro martinez had long fingers thats why at 5'10 he had sick movement on his changeups and curves.

The guy in the blue needs to join the MLB as soon as he learns change ups, sliders, curves at least. You got to know how to at least throw 5 different kinds of pitches with 2 kinds of fastballs. He needs to learn how to throw wind up pitches. He's only been throwing from a stretch position for like when a runner is on base.

guess its "velo day"...I also guess that latest scientific breakthroughs did show that oopmhing a few during normal scheduled bullpen sessions is not the way to go anymore.... no. its better to have a pure velo session to go all out for 20-30 pitches and call it a day. it also seems to be great to have all kinds of wacky body movement , then come to a complete stillstand to only re-introduce additional movement. but ok. whatever helps the young guns to get into their groove I suppose. I just wish we had the same acces to analytics, biomechanics and "science" way back when I played. and all the mistakes we made in our throwing schedules.... makes you wonder what would have been possible. I am just a sour old dog howlin at the moon

Is this being measured at the plate or out of the hand? If it’s out of the hand, they arent throwing any harder than pitchers 20 years ago. If it’s 100 at the plate, then we can talk.

Nobody wants to mention this for some reason. I guess so we can all ignore the truth and hype up arms like this compared to the guys from the past. Truthfully very few people even know they changed how it’s recorded so maybe it’s that.

Sure - until arms break. Happy to see they are focused on mph and at the same time not looking at the stress on arm telemetry. These guys are hacks related to the physiology of body mechanics and when arms will break down. Sorry - these “coaches” are clowns unless they are getting certified by Greg Rose at TPI (OnbaseU).
