100 officers to Rikers Island Jail

2 жыл бұрынNew York City is reassigning 100 NYPD officers to courtrooms so corrections officers can try to alleviate the staffing shortage at Rikers Island.
"Plagued by dysfunction, neglect, and violence" is how Rikers Island has been described by Attorney General Letitia James. She visited Tuesday with a group of city and state officials.
So far this year, eleven inmates have died while in custody.

The reason for this, is that they are not being REHABILITATED. But rather, they are being treated like animals so that they will become like or MORE like animals. The SYSTEM does not care about blacks & Hispanics, & most whites get away with everything including murder. They want all blacks & Hispanics DEAD. Many say they became worse while incarcerated.

They keep coming back because the jails take troubled people and turn many of them in absolute monsters. They are not rehabilitated at allwhen they go upstate. Most of the prisons in the mountains are gladiator schools and there absolutely zero preparation for re-entry back into society.

A new guard there only makes like 50k a year. Good luck finding new hires. This jail should have been rebuilt years and years ago.

Their top pay after five years is $100k the problem is the overtime noone wants to do two tours of 12 hours each. Thats 24 hours of staying awake in a area with no cellphone no talking. Just looking at inmates cells. The officers might as well be in there with the prisoners as well.

@@melvin5818 they often say that. Working in Rikers is actually becoming a inmate. And you may have to work 16 hr shifts by the times that’s over no one wants to work that. Got about 6,7 hours to be normal and back to the drawing board 4 days a week.

Prisons are to seperate, but a correctional officer's job is to prevent escape and to ensure the safety of inmates. Inmates are not all violent.

You are right. Most of the guards in California are ok, but some take the job as a power trip. Sociopaths who took the job just to be assholes or make money off contraband. $75 for a pouch of tobacco, and $300 for an Obama phone.

That's 💯 percent fact. I was on Rikers for 3 years and I seen with my own eyes how the guards creat chaos and a lord of the flies mentality. I seen guards hand out weapons to gang members to attack other gang members and start gang wars because as long as we act like savages they can always look like heros meanwhile it's the officers that create a Savage environment. In the adolescents building c74 they had a fight ring for inmates to be on the house gang clean up crew and receive $10 or $20 dollars weekly these house gangs were ran in a hierarchy it was a system you had the guy who ran the house he was a boss you had the guy that ran the phone you had the guy that ran the pantry and handed out the food and you had the guy that runs the day room. At anytime time you could call any of them out to fight and take there spot. It was called knock out for the lock out. I even seen co's, betting on fights. If a person got to the house he had to be with the program and if he wasn't he would be SMOKED which means jumped but the whole house had to participate in this jumping. I LIVED BECAUSE I BECAME AN ANIMAL.

They make exactly what firemen and police make 94000 base pay 102000 plus with add ons,.Sanitation makes 90 percent of that, but have a lot of overtime and a lot safer. 🙏

Most INMATES committed some terrible acts on innocent people. I've worked in several jails on Rykers, some of these inmates are straight animals. Some of them need to be kept away from people....You do the crime, pay with your time.......

Nobody in their right mind would willingly give up their freedom and loved ones. Many are in because of drugs and poverty. Homelessness, prisons and low income housing are big moneymakers for the democrats. It really took off with Clinton signing the prison reform act. I am white and live on the West Coast and our prison population grew to 187% of capacity to grab Fed money. Less than 15% of these prisoners committed violent crime. Most are addicts, or committing crimes of economic circumstance. Its unfair to lump them with gun toters and rapists. They will be back in society. I have been lucky to be off parole and crime free for 18 years. They don't make it easy for parolees to become free citizens.

If the correctional officers wanted to be clean they can have it be cleaned if they wanted to theses brothers to get better they would do that but they’re not because he’s a correctional officer from the community they only have a high school diploma let’s say it again these officers from the community that only have a high school diploma message people

Firstly Sadly Rikers is in my community 😢 Jail is not supposed to be Trump tower What about the victims don't get me started teaching criminals how to be locksmiths My 🔐 have been taken apart 5 times I Dumber than a sack of frogs My locksmith says he doesn't even know how he's been a locksmith 25 years What about the victims ..not even these conditions keep folks from returning Take away the weight room Radio except the prayer channel perhaps Television cartoons only Food oatmeal liver wurst sandwiches pasta every night With DNA 3 strikes you stay in Jobs shoveling snow picking up garbage cooking laundry that's it Look at the situations in Venezuela and Madagascar Florida and get back to me Just released 200 criminals just brilliant some career criminals Liberals destroyed NYC

Here is a solution to fix the problem in Rikers as well as the NYC Correction Dept. First move the inmates to other facilities even upstate on a temporary basis. Then start a renovation project of Rikers Island to bring it into the 21st Century addressing all the problems facing the prison. While the renovations is going have the NYC Department Of Investigation review personnel records to see all medical call outs as well as general performance details. If any are not up to muster TERMINATION. Next have the NYC Sheriff Department now take charge of all the City Jails like they did in the 19th Century. Rotate officers between the jails and field assignments to keep officers honest and reduce issues of corruption and dishonestly. Step up training for officers to be better prepared to tackle the issues in the jail system. And this is only the tip of the solutions. Oh YES there is more but it's NOT FREE. But the issue can be fixed and be a saving to taxpayers.

There are some people in there for simple charges like shoplifting, prostitution, traffic offenses, minor offenses or in there for a crime they didn't commit. Alot of you up here commenting about criminal this and criminal that live privileged lives and wouldn't be talking that shit if you was a victim of injustice or was locked up for something you didn't do or was in their shoes. They may of broke the law but they are human beings.

@@destiny2572 yeah I agree but be mindful that goes on all over the United States … and a lot of the times it could’ve been handled way better , and other time it’s cause people are too damn IGNORANT and think they know it all ..get pulled over “STFU ask the officer is there anything wrong ..get a ticket and move on” but nah ya got these hood lawyers out here playing the race card or just being plain stupid acting crazy and not following commands as instructed ..I’m all for justice for those who have been shot or killed by police but I’m also fully aware of the garbage that’s lurking outside
