Back in Lewiston, Maine, Steve returns to the boathouse to assist with some last-minute work for the launch of schooner Hindu.
There are very few boats along the Eastern Seaboard that have worked in the charter industry for as long as Hindu. The timing of her launch coincides with her 100th year on the water-pretty special!
Josh Rowan, Erin Desmond, and the crew have spent the last 4 years in the boathouse working on Hindu, while also preserving her original spirit.
Josh has been a sailor for quite some time, and fell in love with Hindu in the early 2000s. Years later, Josh and Erin took on the project of fully restoring the schooner to bring her back to the sea. After years of tireless work by the crew, it’s time to bring her back to work.
Schooner Hindu gets a ride down the road to the boatyard, and Steve gets to work in the cockpit. The following day, she sets sail.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the Hindu project!

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

My very first time in a sailboat was in 1979 on a schooner that sailed out of Provincetown. I don’t remember the name of the boat. But I will never forget the feeling I got when the engine was turned off and as the sails filled with air, the boat heeled slightly and we began silently moving. Forty five years later I’m still sailing and still get that feeling. Thank you for stirring my memories!

This was such a great episode. Some boat building, a launch, and some good ol fashioned sailing. I have to say how grateful I am to be able to see a boat like Hindu and be able to appreciate the amount of passion that goes into restoring and launching a wooden boat like that. This channel has opened my eyes to the world of wooden boats and I am so grateful.

Absolutely fantastic video, gang. Nice to see and hear Anne again, I was getting worried we'd have to call the Coast Guard to find her. So glad to see she's doing well. Watching Steve work on Hindu brought back memories of some other boat-building channel I used to watch. 🤭 Watching Arabella hit the water for the first time really allowed me to appreciate all the joy and excitement the crew of Hindu felt at launch. Anchors aweigh!!!

I won't bother make a flag mention... enough have already. That was cool to see Steve getting to play, relatively stress free (on somebody else's vessel). Nice to see Anne's smile after all her efforts. That Hydraulic trailer is a yard worker's 'wet dream' (forgive the pun). I have a Lott of questions such as: is the rudder alloy or stainless ? Will she keep her WWII era paint job or is that essentially 'fun with the primer/undercoat' ? Didn't Hindu retire from service before the renovation from P-town on the Cape ? Will she return there ? Further comments: It would have been nice to see even a simple brief still shot of the boat mentioned, launched at Mystic. Once again... Josh 'knocks it out of the park with the editing and video production ! :)

@gilray1977
@gilray1977 Ай бұрын
@@TheAKtracks I have very mixed feelings about considering the flag being merely a '...a piece of fabric,' It is indeed an 'idol'. When I was very young I shared your attitude. I was never in the military / served. Yet as the son of a WWII vet and the grandson of a WWI and II, career military General I hold what she symbolizes as very dear. Yes just a symbol, but what it symbolizes I hold in the highest of respect. A picture of a loved one is merely a 'picture'. It's not the picture itself but rather the subject it represents, the memories of past and dreams of the future. Above all the flag represents those that served and especially those that made the ultimate sacrifice for you to have a 'right' to your opinion, of which I may not agree but there are millions that have paid dearly for your 'right'. Did you notice the paint job on the Hindu ? Does it look ugly to you or do you see it as a beautiful remembrance of those that gave their lives for us and our freedoms ? :)

Sorry but i just red monohulls cant turn 360. even though not a true 360, its because we don't add a ballast keel to the rudder itself, and give it a special mechanical rigging allowing the rudder to keel with the boat and still turn. this mechanism would have a lock feature allowing it to act like a traditional rudder. but for racing and sailing in tight areas, this can allow monohull to keel over and turn nearly 360 to get out of dangerous winds. this would allow a ship to snag a strong wind, keel over, and dash in a zag to quickly and shift the other way and so on. this would close the angle of close hauling, allowing for much more speed in headwind conditions. Post edit. If anyone takes this idea mark my words its right here and its mine.
