Discover what happened in the past 100 years of Korean Beauty and the historical origin of many contemporary Korean Beauty Standards we still see today.
Every year, on August 15, Korea celebrates National Liberation Day. This day, which is known in Korean as 광복절 (Gwangbokjeol, literally "the day the light returned"), celebrates the liberation of Korea from 35 years of Japanese colonial rule in 1945.
To commemorate this important holiday, I wanted to show you what Korean Beauty looked like 100 years ago, back when Korea was under Japanese colonial rule.
In this new episode of my series on the history of Korean Beauty, we're going to explore how Korean Beauty (and Korean Beauty Standards) moved away from the ancient confucian values of simplicity and purity, to embrace new modern ideals, that later went on to shape contemporary Korean Beauty as we know it today.
The video is available with English, Italian and Korean subtitles:

I like your video. From Joseon and Japanese colonial era to recent social phenomena, you really pointed out the standards of beauty as well as the social atmosphere through imperial strategies. (I'm a Korean woman. This comment may be awkward because it was written using a translator. I'm sorry :) )

Thank you 🙏🙏🙏 it means a lot to me. The subject of your study is incredibly interesting, especially when you consider that many women's instititions (that later went on to become the birth places of women's rights movements in Korea) were actually founded by Christian missionaries. I would love to read your research once you complete it, do keep in touch please!

@OdileMonodTheMonodist
@OdileMonodTheMonodist 3 жыл бұрын

@mariasdailyjoe1953
@mariasdailyjoe1953 3 жыл бұрын

Hi, most of the beauty information in the video is based on a book titled 한국미용100년. The book was not translated in English unfortunately but you can find some English information on gender roles, fashion and beauty during this era in "New Women in Colonial Korea" (the only English book available on the topic as far as I know). The historical information is widely available, but if you'd like to start somewhere, "A History of Korea" by Kyung Moon Hwang is a very comprehensive book on Korean History.
