After six months of riding and enjoying this dual sport motorcycle, I'm excited to share my 1000 mile Suzuki DRZ400S review with you. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the DRZ400S, and if you're considering buying one of these great dual sport bikes, let me give you my thoughts on the pros, cons, and overall experience of what it's like to ride and own a DRZ400. This bike can truly do it all, from tearing up the backcountry through the rain, mud, snow, sand, and rocky technical trails to freeway, highway, and general around town riding. Not only can the Suzuki DRZ400S do it all, but it does it all in an insanely fun way. Every moment of riding on this bike is filled with tons and tons of smiles per mile.
My Suzuki DRZ400S review isn't all positive, though. There are some significant downsides to this decades-old design, including lack of fuel injection, only a five speed transmission, and the lack of any modern features like a fuel gauge, traction control, ABS, or anything like that.
Overall, though, my Suzuki DRZ400S is insanely positive. The six months and 1,000 miles I have spent on this enduro motorcycle have been the happiest and most fun of my motorcycling career. This bike is capable and confidence inspiring in ways no other motorcycle, dual sport or no, that I have ridden has been. The DRZ 400 S may be my favorite bike of all time.

Got my DRZ400 sm new in 2015. I have put 50,000 miles on it. Only maintenance I have EVER done is replace brakes and change the oil.. THATS it! I have flogged it on and off road and been on a few 3 hour high way trip at 75 mph. Hoping it would blow up so I can put a big bore kit on it. BUT not even the valves have NEVER EVER needed adjustments. I ride a wheelie ever time I let the clutch out and try to find things I cant do on it. BULLET PROOF!

Bought my DRZ in 2016 once I realized I didn't have the skill to muscle my KTM 1290SA around off-road. The intent was to use something cheap and disposable to improve my skills. Four years later and it did that. It's also become my go-to for offroad riding. I still love my big KaTooM, and for long distance ADV riding there's nothing better. But a weekend in the Smokies on the DRZ is an absolute blast as well.

Just over 500 miles on my 2020 DRZ, loving it. Stepped down from a f700gs and the trail riding is so much more fun. The 3x3, full Yoshi, JD Jet Kit did open it up a lot. I have had many bikes over the last 50 years and I think I found my last one.

Late to the party at 62 yrs of age. Love the guidance and suggested mods. Built up my own Drz for trail and motocamping. Super fun dirt squirt for a beginner like me. My gal resurrected a Dr350 to join in the fun. WoW, the Dr350 is exceptionally competent as well and a 6th gear! Ben, You Rock!!! Cheers, 4:58 5:00

I really want a DR-Z or a DR650. I am done with my heavier and larger adventure bikes (KTM 990 ADV and Yamaha Super Tenere) and its time to get something lighter with zero rider nanny crap. I don't care if it has a carb or only five gears. I had a DR650 from 2001 to 2008 and I really miss it. I also had a DR350 during that same time and it was an excellent dual sport bike.

We here in Australia are fortunate to still be able to purchase a 2020 DRZ400E which is road registrable and has the S subframe for carrying luggage. The E model comes with all of the engine upgrades and produces around 40 HP in stock form. The DRZ still sells so well around the world because they are bullet proof reliable work horses capable of doing well over 50000km before needing a top end refresh. The must mods are a larger tank, stiffer suspension springs, bash plate and D606 or MT21 tyres. The KTM690 is on paper a better bike but will cost twice as much and half as reliable.

Yeah you Australians have all the nice machines. The 70 series land cruiser possibly the greatest vehicle ever made. I'm about to purchase the DRZ 400 S. Wondering what the main difference are, just less power?
@EricBanner571
@EricBanner571 Жыл бұрын
@@distilledfreedom1840 Pretty much. The E model comes with a 39mm pumper carb and more aggressive cams. You can still big bore the S model, add a stroker crank, pumper carb and cams and you would be up around 50 ish HP which is KTM500 territory with a much more reliable motor with less service intervals. The DRZ is a great bike.

Love your vids! I’m new to motorcycles, but have been off roading trucks and jeeps my entire life. Finally, at age 48 (mid life crisis?) I bought a DRZ400S. Like all my vehicles, I can’t leave well enough alone, and in 7 months I’ve made it mine. I’m still a beginner but have really started getting the “dance” right and am absolutely hooked. Thanks for all the informative vids, and keep on having a blast out there! Cheers

Owned a 2016 DR-Z “S” model (USA) and the stock fueling was utter crap, requiring the choke to be on for the first 7-10 miles after initial warm up do to the extreme lean mixture. (Carb kit fixed that 👍.) Unfortunately my mind was telling me I was 16 and could still go crashing through the woods, but my body reminded me I was 60 😳, so I sold it. I missed the grunty power delivery and ease of around town use of the 400, so this year I purchased a new “SM” model. It now has a passive “air injection” system fitted and the fueling is not to bad, (Carb kit at the ready). I figure I’ll fit a set of Avon Trailriders and stay on the graded roads.....until my inner 16 year old gets the best of me 😆🏍😱.

I bought my used SM last weekend. Paid a fair price. I rode it to work on Monday (30 miles round-trip) and it was a different experience from what I'm used to. I have no motor to help me out when things get sketchy on the highway. I the city however, it's a blast. As far as the 5 speed and the carb complaints. My GSXR 1100 and ZRX 1200 both have 5 speed gearboxes and there's no issues (I know, apples and oranges). So far the only fun upgrades I'll get to do is front braking. It already has most everything else. Flat slide pumper, exhaust, big tank, fender eliminater, bark busters with LEDs, pro tapers, rack, 3x3 and K&N, shorty fender. Lots of little details I'm forgetting. I'll upgrade to a Brembo and braided line. See if I'm satisfied with the front. So far I'm very happy with my purchase. I sold my unused car. So following the law of the universe. If you sell a toy, you must get another toy to put in its place. Otherwise the world ends. With the shortcomings of the old outdated DRZ. You get rock solid reliability, a very tough motor and endless support with the community and parts. Trading a few HP and a few pounds for thousands of miles of fun and extensive verity of aftermarket parts. Totally worth it.

First bike was a Yamaha xt225. Sold it about 10 years ago because of lack of power to pull in front of traffic. Just go a good deal on a 08 drz400 with 1000 miles a month ago. Couldn't be happier. Lots of torque, plenty of power for the city. And fun as hell off road. Just need exhaust and new tires.

I agree with your opinion of the DRZ. I’ve had 3 over the years. My first, I converted to a super motard with 17 inch wheels and street tires. I didn’t re-gear it, so it wasn’t very good on road or off. I later bought a used DRZ and used it for some trail riding. It worked better left alone and unmodded. I eventually got a true SM model. It was surprisingly capable off road with the street tires, if only on gravel and dirt roads. I didn’t do any “real” off road with it. I will say the suspension on the SM is better than the regular DRZ. I think it uses parts more like the RM dirt bike. I’m considering another DRZ now. I’m getting older and I’m ready to spend more time off-road, away from the crazies using the pavement. I’ll add that I’ve had over 60 bikes in my 30 plus years of riding, so I know a little about a lot of different types and models of bikes. I had a Honda 250 dual sport, a Kawasaki KLR 250, a DR 650 (the same one twice), and my 3 DRZ, and I’ll say the DR’s were the most capable.

Think the drz is based off of a dirt bike whereas the Dr line off street bikes. They are very different. Suspension and frame completely different and the Dr is an air cooled motor with the 650 having oil cooling. The drz of course liquid cooling. The stance is completely different with more travel.

Man I love my drz I just put it away last week finally decided it was too cold to ride lol. I live in Canada and out of all bikes I've owned this bike is a unit. Parts are cheap its a torque monster for a 400. Mines a 454 stroker. And it'll run in -4c without issue. It'll start first turn run like a top. I've been convinced after riding my drz that few bikes are better they may be more modern but you'll never beat its simplicity and that leads to reliability. And with mods like I have (there are few things that havnt been touched) it's still holds that reliability. And my 454 setup fcr42 carb. Ext you'll never run short on power it'll hang with the best of em highway if you're not doing like 90+mph and you may even outperform some in the dirt.

Hunting down a dual sport after 26 years road riding (sport tour: Kawi Concours, MotoGuzzi Norge; adv-tour VStrom 650XT), to go off road only with enough onroad just to get off it. Unwillingly involved in the idiocy driving of others in three crashes that should have killed me three times, I’m leaving pavement for the killerkarzz. But riding is life, and my wife and son still want me around😁. So… DR-Z or a KLX… KLX a bit too small for my 6’1/210 mass, and the Kove450 still a bit too new. DR-Z seemed right but… on the fence until I watched your vid here and read through the comments. Along with my other fact finders, your “fun” point cinched it. 🤙🏼

I have been having fun learning about all the mods for this bike and have implemented a number of them already. I am not sure if it was from sitting to long in the former owners garage or what but it was hard to start when cold. I did the jd jetting mod and pulled the air box snorkel out and now it runs great. I did not do the 3x3 part yet. I am going to see how it feels the way it is and then decide weather or not to do the 3x3 air box mod.

Nice review! Glad you like the DRZ so much. Oh man, I'm at around 350 miles over the past month. I disagree slightly about off roading- the bike is terrifyingly tall, heavy, and long, but that's just my opinion! All depends on what you're looking for. Pretty rad how far apart the maintenance intervals are, and the low end torque is nice. Heck, on the road, the thing feels amazing, and in the desert it was pretty good! A cool bike indeed, but I'm starting to think about an XR250R to replace it.

If you like the power of the DRZ400 the XR400R is a good compromise between that and the XR250R. Although the 250 is a great off-road bike. I ride my xr400 considerably more...

Its a nice little bike, have almost 23k miles on my 2016. Far more capable off road than most of us . of course it has limitations off road because its a dual sport.. On street its good (i commute to work every day (99% of tge time) long hwy not to much fun , yes it can cruise at 70 /75 mph (top speed is about 92 /94 mph speedo) but its not confy, non existant wind protection (get tired much faster) I went camping a few times doing 700 miles round trip, it was ok.

Good to hear! I'm a beginner looking for my first bike and was looking at the klx 300 but am worried it might not have enough power for the little bit of highway and street driving. So it sounds like the DRZ is perfect power for both. I don't want to be worried about too much power also.

Dude u have excellent taste and are very well spoken. Rare in this world today. I come from a moto x background and have been riding since my ct 70 when i was 10 years old im now 57. Anyway i have a 20 drz 400 with the typical mods. This bike rips!! Bottom line feels like a old school moto bike off road! Sure its a bit heavy compared to a modern 2 stroke but im not into paying 12 g for a dirt bike

@@adamtisch8358 It does rip, but it also does require skill for tight single track. There's nothing worse than trying to manhandle a 317 lbs top-heavy bike in tight woods without the proper technique 😆.

I've had 4 S models, 3 E's and bought my first SM a year ago, I love the look of the SM but it in no way compares off road to the S, it does do well enough at just trail dogging to suit my old tired body, I will mention the S was much easier to loft the front wheel, the SM feels like it has farther to go and requires more beef to get it up.

Great video! Can I ask which tire you went to?? Also, I am 1500 miles into life on a KLX300, it does in fact have a super comfortable seat. I feel the dual sport seat discomfort on friends and family's dual sports - but there IS a comfortable dual sport seat (stock) out in the motorcycle world.

The only change I'm making to mine is lowering the suspension. I have the sm and short legs, going to send the suspenders off to Racetech and get closer to the ground. My old 350D had a 25 inch seat height, needless to say, they don't make those any more...

hi, I'm writing from Oslo, I should buy a 2003 13500km drz 400 s. the bike doesn't look bad (according to the photos), but my concern is that the bike doesn't have the electronic ignition but the kick start, and all the drz 400s I've seen since 2001 have an eletric start. is it ever possible that the bike is from 2003 and maybe not older?
