Since my 535i F10 just crossed the 100k miles mark, let's have a little rundown of all the problems I encountered during my ownership of this car and what might come in the future.
I'm leaving out services and upgrades, and focus this video on repairs and problems only to give you a somewhat realistic expectation regarding to owning a 9 year old 5 series.
Leave your experience in the comments and what you think of BMW 5 series reliability.

Never understood why they can’t figure out the fact that their door parts get gummy after a while, what I did was take a razor and just cut it out looks fine still and is just fine

I was considering that when changing the small cover of the center console lock. could literally remove the coating and just use the bare plastic part

I have that same car 2014 535i with X drive and the M sport package. I bought it from the dealer when it was two years old. The only issue was an oil leak at the oil filter/oil cooler housing, and I bought the gaskets from the dealer, and changed them myself. Another thing I did was to get rid of the run-flat tires and replace them with Michelin Pilot Sport S 4. I live in Canada, and I put the car away for the winters. The car has never seen snow. I love driving this car.

I'd love to go for PS4s but there's just so much crap on the roads here that I wont make it far without a spare.. have you checked your diff bushing? mine is due again! like every 60k miles

The run flat tires that come with the car are horrible. I replaced them with Bridgestone Driveguard run flats and its more comfortable to drive. However, when I need new tires will switch to Michelin. @@BONDGarage

You’re lucky you have projectors because if you were like me if it’s not the module, you’re looking at about $2500 for one headlight assembly. I have full adaptive led headlights and fogs

does your rear window power shade still go up and down? Have you had to repair or replace the interior head liner? thank you

my shades aren't powered. it's a bmw aftermarket shade that fits into the frame. you just 3M tape some holders onto the frame and door panel and they will hold the shade. never had to take the headliner off this car.

@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage 7 ай бұрын
Chains aren't really an issue on the N55s. Here and there someone might have a problem but it's nowhere near as widespread as the chains on the 4 cylinders or the valve stem seals on the V8s.

After watching numerous BMW videos this one will be the last. You never mentioned the price for all these repairs so I can only imagine. I am convinced that I will never own a BMW. Even if I was a millionaire with money to blow I do not have the time or patience to deal with the many and mostly expensive issues this car will have. I'm putting my 535i fantasies to rest. Thank you.
@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage 10 ай бұрын
the f10 535i is actually pretty reliable. other than the few things to look out for, which I all addressed and they aren't really expensive, there's not much that goes wrong with these cars. of course there's always something that can go wrong but that's with any car of any brand. regarding me not mentioning prices, that's easy. it's not that straight forward. there's no single price for a certain repair. you can fix it yourself with OEM parts or aftermarket parts. now you already have 2 different prices. or you can take it to the dealer, that would be your highest possible price. but there are also many different shops in between that will price differently. so each repair comes with a range of prices, from the cheapest aftermarket DIY all the way up to the BMW dealership. there are plenty of forums and FB groups that happily share repair costs in their region to give comparisons. those are good starting points if you'd want to learn more. other than that, each car is different depending on how it was treated and serviced. so overall the F10 is a fantastic car especially with M pack. go drive it. take the 535i or 535d. enough power and good economy. great mix of comfort and sport and you can always tweak it more towards your liking. I'd stay away from the 528s and early 550s though.

I have a 2016 with 110k miles and a lot of tuning and modifications and my car doesn't miss a beat the last time I had an issue was when it was stock 57k on the clock an ignition coil failed while I was driving and the idle got really rough the 2016's are the cheat code to f10 reliability.

How much do you pay for everything?
@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage Жыл бұрын
I haven't tracked it since most parts have been below $200 and I did the work myself. the most expensive failure was the AC compressor. the rest should total up to $2k - $2.5k. not including service items like brakes, plugs, coils, filters, fluids, etc. so repair-wise it's less than $5k with the only labor expense being wheel alignments and ac refills. that rear main seal will add quite a chunk though..

@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage Ай бұрын
I mean it's no Toyota but then it also doesn't drive like one. I've had a lemon F15 though. dealer put $20k into it fixing it under warranty but still couldn't make it right. brand bought it back. F10 and N55 do have some known issues (diff bushings, OFHG, valve cover and later on oil pan) but other than it's pretty solid and has good performance. and those things are rubber and seals so they will cause problems with age in any car. gotta admit though that this AC compressor surprised me. that one is out of the ordinary.

Would Rather Lease > Own these BMW's especially after watching this
@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage Жыл бұрын
sure thing. If you rather drive a brand new car without having to worry about anything, are unable/unwilling to work on it and are ok to throw the cash for the lease at it, go do it! you won't regret it! the newer models are of course more modern with more performance and comforts. based on what I hear and read, my 535 had nothing major going wrong besides the AC compressor. Never even had a CEL pop up. One could also argue that the older models look better and then the lease option already falls off the table. If you can, and are willing to work on your cars yourself, it'll come out cheaper than a lease of a comparable newer model. I did run the numbers for myself. The planned ownership period is a big factor of course. But I have to admit that since living in the states, I get why so many people lease their cars. They just don't want to deal with repair shops and everything that comes with owning the car.

Why do you keep on driving low quality German cars? Get a Lexus and be done...
@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage Жыл бұрын
because I like the way they drive and I like driving. have a 2016 Lexus in the family that I drive like once a week and it makes me feel like I'm 20 years older. If I just wanted to get from A to B, don't care much about the driving performance and just want something more or less reliable and budget-friendly, yea I'd agree and go with Lexus or Toyota. Those are solid cars. Personally I don't like the materials used (you can tell that the Lexus is a Toyota underneath), also the interior design is more rugged than luxe, and of course the driving experience. And I might be biased since I'm German but let's just call it personal preference.
