A very tough overnight distance challenge walk.
📷 INSTA: / josephxkendrick
I've wanted to complete a 24-hour walking distance challenge for many years now. Previously, I had set myself the goal of 100 miles and went for it on the longest night of the year. Unsurprisingly, I failed at around 30 miles / 50km and of course that mileage seemed ridiculous in hindsight, especially for a non-runner.
A few years later, I find myself inspired to give it another shot. This time lowering the target to 100km / 62 miles. I wasn't intending to run a single step of it. I also decided to use the local canals which offered the perfect conditions of being traffic-free, having easy directions and almost zero hills. Although, the unique aspect of this attempt would be that I'd carry everything I'd need from the very start. This means I would be completely independent and I'd need no outside assistance whatsoever. This was to bolster my self-sufficiency mindset, but also somewhat due to the current pandemic lockdown the world is facing.
Upon leaving the house, my backpack was weighing it at around 17kg / 38lbs filled with food, drink, electronics, clothing and other supplies. My shoulders definitely felt it but I had been training with some walks with weights in my bag so it wasn't a total shock. The positive aspect to this was that it could only get lighter as the event progressed. Something my back and feet would be very thankful for as the pain steadily increased.
Setting off at 1pm, I immediately tucked into some of the junk food I had with me. Crisps are annoying to carry so I got rid of them first. A handy bin relieved me of about 10 grams of packaging weight. This was technically my breakfast as I had stayed up late and snoozed as much as I could. This is to bring the night hours closer to the start of the walk which in theory makes the lack of stimulating sunlight, and the tiredness that brings with it, easier to handle.
I spent the first hour listening to rather trippy ambient music. Strangely setting the tone for what would be a very tough quest - both physically and psychologically. I knew it was going to be hard work, and I know never to underestimate these things, but I was in for a ride.

I'm Joseph Kendrick and I create videos about challenging myself. I love to push my limit with cycling and hiking. I have circumnavigated Australia on a fixed gear bicycle solo & unsupported as well as being the first person to complete an Everesting attempt on a fixie, riding multiple 24-hour time trials, Everesting on a road bike, cycling the USA west coast, bike touring through The Alps, finishing the South Downs Way and Hadrian's Wall hikes both in four days each among others. I use my channel to share these adventures with the world to inspire others and also as motivation to raise my expectations of myself and generate more ambition. I am constantly dreaming up the next big idea - from walking across countries, to cycling to extreme points and competing in ultracycling bikepacking races - so stay tuned to see what I come up with next.

Congrats to get the 100k done. And from personal experience I can tell it´s harder to make it in 24hrs than in 20hrs or less. Finally it´s the time on the trail which is killing the mind and the joints. My longest hike was a 26hrs solo with 120km. Trying to beat myself failed. So far. Curious, if you will try it again. Subscibed.
@josephxkendrick

Yeah, pushing to the 24 hours is brutal. Last winter I did a thirty-one hour bike ride (no sleep) and the Goggins Challenge. Now I'm thinking about doing another attempt this winter - maybe actually use shops along the way this time so I don't have to carry as much weight. 26 hours for 120km is insane bro.

One of the worst things you can do when walking long distances is not taking breaks. It's a common rookie mistake. In the military they take 5-10 min break every hour, at first that might seem unnecessary, but believe you me, when you walk 100-150-200 km, those breaks really adds up. Its about giving the body rest, before it's completely worn out. It's also very helpful to lie down and elevate your legs. THe 100 km is definitely impressive, big congrats :)
@stevieboy2539
@stevieboy2539 2 жыл бұрын
It's best not to stop for breaks to be honest . Once you stop that's when you start getting pains and stiffness . If you do need to stop make it less than 30 seconds if possible . I have done several 24 hr walks . Last wk I did the Hadrian wall path

Heck yeah dude, that sounds awesome. I did a few marathon and a double-marathon distances as prep for this too. Thinking about doing another 100km+ in 24 hours again this year... maybe less weight and use the shops along the way. Walking in the dead of night has a beautiful peacefulness to it - even if you're pushing yourself hard.

Thanks for the Sub! Love your channel, I've only ever done one walking challenge before (100km) in two days and I was DESTROYED after haha so I can only imagine how difficult doing it in 1 day would be 😅

Thanks brother. Got your Kinobody transformation videos recommended to me and they were awesome. Been lifting the last ~7 months in lockdown. Inspiring stuff. About to start a cut again. Looking to try the 4x4x48 Goggins challenge this year!

That's not possible. You cannot walk 8.3 km an hours for 24 hours straight without breaks, and if you want breaks, you have to walk 9 km an hour.

Being F'd up for a week afterwards doesn't sound good! Maybe 12 hours ish walking max , bivvy bag overnight and you are on a journey somewhere? London through Wales to Dublin. London to Paris? post covid, warmer weather. Some people walk around the world!

It was purely a distance challenge, so sleeping just wastes time haha. I could walk pretty fine a few days later but left ankle took a little longer to decompress. Long walking journeys are definitely pretty spiritual!
