I picked up a squall 60 combo 6'6" rod from bass pro, it was my first rod that I haven't strung myself, I went with a 60lb mono, holds tons of line just figured I'd let them do it since I was already there..

They will spool you up..good customer service he even threw me a coupon for 25% off my purchase since I spent quit a bit that day..but yea you can take your reels in to get spooled or if you purchase there, just pick up your choice of line and they will take care of you.

as a longterm penn only fishernan that is line capacity ring last line is recommended full so you can put a good top shot on there iv got 100mt of 80 fl Fluorocarbon on a 37 kg lbg rod with the same reel now ive got a 130 vi international wich i thinks all out impressive product took 4 years for the upgrade

I used to be penn same way had 15 4/0hlw, 2 6/0hlw,1-9/0,1-12/0, 4 international 50vsw.... plus others shimano, abu, Newell's.. total 27 rod reel combos... then I was introduced to the Avets... and it was game over ... 1 50exw smoked 4 international 50vsw... and then the raptors started smoking the the 4/0s it was crazy sold many and gave away the rest... the fight times dropped dramatically, line capacity increased when we started to use braid and then the pulling in of our surf weight went thru the roof.. breaking leader trees out there 1 after another.. 1 time pulled in like 35 leaders...

I have a squall 50vsw currently spooled with about 1km of 50lbs mono. I'm using it for targeting sharks off the beach in nsw Australia and was wondering if I should spool it with 1.5 km of 100lbs 4ply braid then topshot it. But now I'm questioning if I really need this and if so should I get another spool for the same reel as I use it for other things like yellow amberjack off my kayak. Thanks for the help it's greatly appreciated

4 ply braid? Haven't heard of that one... thinking it my be a solid braid cause the 12 and 16 strand braids are a hollow core and even going with 100# it will be 20# mono diameter so you will gain yardage big time

I would go Hollow core Braid hands down cause you can splice and have you seen the videos where I shwo the braid 400yds plus out is still just under the waters surface

Yes they set those lines up like that for lbsf so u get an idea of how far your yaking out I'm on a group on Facebook devoted to only Penn reels and a guy from Penn told me that's what it was built for with the lines it was built for beginner into lbsf

What’s your opinion on the Penn Squall’s? I was thinking about purchasing one or two of the 20’s, 30’s or 40’s series? And try them out since the prices are fairly good for me.

power pro is not the only braid to buy, look at whiplash braid, so thin so strong.... 100lb whiplash would be 50lb size wise.. 1000mtrs of line easy...and has room for more.

Before I make my purchase of this reel. I have a question far as line capacity goes. I will be doing the majority of my fishing in obx. Most all of the breaks I will have to cross are about 200 to 500 yards out. I see this reel holds a monster amount of line. Given that the reel has a 40lb drag, I was going to have it spooled with 80lb hollow core braid. It should hold about 2100 yard of line and after I yak the bait about 1000 yards that leaves me 1100 yards of line left. My question is how much line do I honestly need to fight the fish after he takes the bait. For conversation sake let’s say I’m fighting a 12 foot hammer head shark and I have the bait 1000 yards out. What would you say is enough line to not have to worry about him spooling my reel. Thanks in advance for any input

Very good but almost impossible to answer with 100% ... see I have caught smaller sharks that fought like monsters and monsters that have come in so easily... but yes you have a very good chance of landing it... but I seriously would recommend upgrading to 100# loose a little line capacity but enhance your ability to put more drag on the fish.. cause that is also the downside fighting it too long may and can cause the death of the shark...

I have never hooked into a giant shark so I’m not sure what to expect far as it taking line out with him. I figured 1100 yards would be plenty. But like you said on the same token I could stop him faster with 100# and a locked down drag

@Team Hard Life no it just doesn't have one. So trying to figure out how to cast with out having a rat nest lol. Can't find much on Google about it. I normally use abu garcia blue yonder 7000. But thinking about going to the avet reels.

OK yes then you will have to learn to thumb the spool... that is definitely a technique behind it.. but the avets have a good mc cast control

Also depends on how far you drop it and current but I would go with as much braid as you can especially if you can set up a float rig then go straight hollow core braid

If your gona use solid braid then yes use monofilament.. but if your using hollow core there is no need for mono go storage braid .. cause you gota think too the mono will eat your line capacity as well

I have 6 30vsw and 2 50vsw for my trolling spread and hand spooled them! Took forever lol. I use a vice with two sponges on the sides of the spool for pressure. Yes, those are line cap rings. I heard prior to deciding and purchasing the Squall 2 speed reels that they had torqueing issues but I've never had an issues. Ponce Inlet, Fl. I don't use a mono top. I do use fluorocarbon but more as a long leader than a top shot. I also like the Penn Fathom 2 speed series too. But I don't shark fish. Only time I catch sharks is when one eats my catch when I'm pulling it in! The dirty bastids lol!

just curious if the reel flexes under max drag when reeling in once hooked up. that heavy line is going to put some serious stress to the spool ends coming back in from lets say 1000 yards out after turning the fish. that reel is not metal not even the spool.

Pretty sure they do.. but it wont be nearly as much using braid on the spool in comparison to using mono.. have seen spooled locked up because the spool stretched out because of the mono being reel back onto the spool...

Braid will keep that from happening.. no worries.. flexing of the reel should really matter with doesn't have enough drag to lock it over enough to break thru.. however have seen that too where spools blew thru the housing and that too was also with mono... but at the same time too.. dont know I'd the mono had a part in that happening.. say it was wrapping the spool enough times to weaken it...and that's whT cause the spool to come thru the reel.

It’s metric. 550 yards is 500 meters. 1100 yards is 1000 meters.

@@TeamHardLife Maybe a dozen trips a year. What I’m looking for is something I can use for rock fish as well. The bluefin are not always reliable around here but they’ve shown up the last few years. Usually it’s albacore. I got hit unexpectedly twice last year by bluefin on my 30w with 40# mono and lost both fish. I was wondering wtf was going on and when I got to the dock a guy had a 250# beauty and another boat had 3 around 150 each. Live and learn. My buddy is going out with a couple of those Tanacom 1200 electric reels, but I have my doubts they’ll last against fish like that.

I don't know how well the Squall pulls in surf weights ... the avet will pull out all kinds of gear in low gear...

I’m kind of a smaller guy I’ve been out deep-sea fishing several times and I am just about dead on some I have caught for example amberjack literally wore me out would a two speed be better for a smaller person I’m about 170 pounds or does it really matter I think I’ve only use single speed

Well these avets have been designed to fight tuna and mako.. which means they are designed for heavy fast line fishing... i have put them thru the ringer down here and the biggest killer of any reel is dead weight.. and these reels eat it up for breakfast

Hello, Im thinking of trying land based sharkfishing in NY. I always wanted to catch sharks, anf for the first time I did it in florida last year. I kayaked a jack out about 100 yards and was able to land a black tip between 80-100 pounds. Was the best fishing experience of my life, however my rod and reel that I used was defintly not a good one...even tho the job got done. I want a rod and reel that will be strong enough to land some average sized sharks quickly. Was thinking of the Penn Squall 30 just because I dont think I need the 50 size for here in NY from show...do you have any recommended roller rods for that reel as well as for landbased shark fishing? Thanks!

30s and 50s are more line capacity.. the hxw has more drag.. so 30 would be ok but if your wanting to get into it might as well go a bit bigger with the 50 instead of learning you will love it and then regret having to spend more to buy a bigger reel...

There's a cheap rod on the market but it's very decent the okiaya rod... also too I know that Tackle industries was coming out with an offshore rod...

There's another good Rod made by Tackle industries that's reasonably priced as well... they have it in. 30#-50# and 50#-100# which is good for that type of reels.. they are the same company that we use for our casting rods pair with Avet Raptors ...

For budget these reels are pretty good..

If they are single speeds then you have to use the rod to help you fight the fish... but also to to help you pull in your surf weight when you don't catch... but the 2 speed do help .. but some dont have the low gear power handle to help you turn the crank...
