100w USB-C PD car charger, can it deliver?

For years I've wanted the ability to charge my laptop or even a fast tablet on the go in my car. Up till now most USB-C PD adapters I've tried could not deliver enough power to make it happen and I've had to use inverters and other solutions. But this charger promises 100w of USB-C PD output with 20v 5A out, even when using a 12v car system, well, let's test that!

Fantastic video. exactly was I was looking for. Thank you very much. I am in need of powering my microsoft surface pro while I use in the car and I think this car adapter will do the trick while my usb-c PD powerbank can do fast charging but not at the required 60 watts so it seems.

If I recall, the HP EliteBooks come with a 65Watt PSU and they like to settle down at between 55 and 65Watt power draw.

I don't expect it to be gallium nitride, that helps mostly with high voltage transistors. They'd likely advertise if they were using GaN anyway. Regular mosfets work pretty well at

That's insane. I have the exact same one (even recommended it on the Discord), but I was pretty sure it couldn't boost the voltage because of the tiny size. Amazing it can do 20V 5A at that size!

@@tr9036 Some vehicles (mainly trucks) use a 24v system. No new cars use 20 volt batteries. 12 or 24 volt.

Lol boosters can be made small. Lol you have no idea. The issue with the small size is the heat generated and the ability to dissipate it. When the device is small and enclosed the heat is is much bigger factor

99 Amos...? No amps is different the watts . Watrs is calculated by multiplying two numbers. Vots x amps. Amps is the unit of measure ment similar to inches but it measures the amount of current passing through a single point.

I've been looking for something like this but I would like quite a few more plugs. I've got a phone holder with a wireless charger built-in which needs a connection. A few separate cables for passengers. And it would be nice to charge the laptop as well. It seems that they have 160W version as well with 2x USB-C and 1x USB-A, that would be a lot closer to my needs :)

I got this charger a few weeks ago (I think it's the same 100W Baesus). It's temperature stays very cool at 20V 3A (60W) output, I was impressed. Also, yes it does boost the voltage above the car outlet voltage if it needs to. Other Power Delivery chargers do this also.

Yes since on the most cars lighter could deliver 12V x 20amps = 240w

Great video. I'm a bit worried about the car circuit, it should be drawing about 10A through the cigarette lighter. Some older cars can be not designed for 10A continuous draw.

The cable won't allow 10A through it. The cables need to have an e-mark inside it in order to even utilize anything above 3.1A. (e-mark is just like a tiny microcontroller for interfacing with a programmable power supply) So this charger will never exceed 5A

Hi, with the TC 66C do you have to change the settings to get the readings from 12 V/24 V.? Also, I bought the TC 66 instead of the TC66c to save some money is this gonna make life more difficult?.. 😆

Great video! Does anyone know of a 12V to 100W USB-C PD capable outlet that can be wired in directly to a 12V source? I'm looking for something like this for a camper. I figure the direct connection (as opposed to going through a cigarette lighter connection) and possibly larger size could eliminate some of the heat losses.

Did you say it got as hot as 60c? That's 140f! That's very hot! You said you only tested 20v @5A for only 10 minutes, correct? Have you tried just leaving it connected to see how hot it gets, and if it shuts off to protect from overheating? If you're charging a laptop from dead, it's going to take longer than 10 minutes to charge. Plus, I'm most likely going to leave it charging until I reach my destination, which can be over an hour sometimes. I'm worried about it melting plastic and trim, or burning something. I drive a similar year model VW so the interior is very similar to yours.

Baseus is owned by Xiaomi the Apple of China so expect the same highest quality from the inside designs and all around top notch manufacturing at very low prices from their high premium cables to adapter and chargers! The same goes for Essager...

hi so i just bought one and im wondering about the consumption ( battery life) when the car is off and nothing is plugged in (also I think my car cuts all power to the ports when it's off I'm not sure 100% )

Poh no clue on that figure, maybe a watt? But my car also turns off all plugs when off so in that case it wouldn't matter.

Is the car battery 12V or 24V type? it is impossible for the charger to do over 12V unless the car battery is 24V and having a 24V output cigarette socket, or there is a step-up transformer in the charger. *** Hmm upon checking, their 160W charger has built-in step-up transformer to achieve 20V output, this is interesting. Many other chargers cannot do that, the rated power output can only be achieved on lorry or bigger truck with 24V socket.

I showed it in the video but my car is a regular 12v system and the plug can both buck and boost the voltage! So that 20v 5A out was with about 13.7v coming in I believe.

@@IntermitTech Dang, that's pretty cool! I saw another charger from Baseus (I think the 160W one with 2 USBC and 1 USBA) that said it could only give output 15V to 20V range if it was plugged to a 24V input. Glad I saw this video first before buying that one!

Using a boost converter that's certainly possible and as shown in the video, it does this just fine.

In theory? Read the specs carefully for gotchas! And well, I generally only recommend what I have tested personally so can't say if it'll work right or not. This one I still use almost daily in the car!

@@ITLifeTips in this case, my phone is the Xiaomi X3 NFC and it supports QC3. I read QC3 does not support PD. I have also seen other KZfaq videos charging the phone via a USB Type C cable from the PD port but they only get 18-27W even if it's a 65W+ charger. My vehicle also is only 12v battery system and my cigar lighter uses a 15amp fuse and my built in 115VAC inverter outlet that provides 150W uses a 15amp fuse. So I have 2 options to deliver power to any charger. The highest I've ever seen my vehicle output when on is about 13.96V at idle, not sure when driving. My stock Xiaomi charger lists 11v=3.0a MAX=33W. So in this case since the buck boost circuit only applies to C1 port that must mean that I can't get 33W at both C1 and C2 at the same time. I guess I'll have to find another charger that does. Thank you for the healthy response, I appreciate it. Good info.

100w might be a bit much since the socket is only rated for 120w but I'd just try, worst case, you blow a fuse.

Normally their stuff works great. However, out of 10 chargers, I had two broken ones. I had similar failure numbers with their cables. IMHO Baseus is good, but Anker is better, i.e. more reliable, but also more expensive.

That's my experience as well. Bought always the little pricier from them and so far they all did a fantastic job. I think they're absolutely fairly priced. Not too cheap to lack function, safety or stability, but also not as expensive as some other brands. They also seem to catch up pretty quickly with new protocols.

No? The car has a normal 12v battery but since it's a hybrid it also has a bigger high voltage battery.

Should have read the review by Bman357 - I tried another brand first (WOTOBEUS) at 100w continuous use and it only lasted 2 nights before it gave up the ghost. Both this charger and the other branded one seem to trip the heat sensor after a couple hours of 100w use. The advantage of this one, other than still working today, is that it cools down a lot faster than the other brand. I ended up buying two of them so I can swap them out and let one be cooling. I would like to see a 100w charger like this but with a fan. The vehicle I am using it in has a lot of space near the cigarette lighter outlet (12v outlet) and maybe a well placed fan in the item would make it last near indefinitely with 100w use. I am not sure why there is a bad review for this item but I am happy with the product so far.
