I've been using oscilloscopes for over 40 years, and only just now did I learn that the plastic cover over the probe's earthing point (time 3:17) can be removed.

The reason why the metal sleeve of the probe looks odd and manky is that it is covered with clear glue. The outer black sleave was glued on, though not very well in this case.

Oscilloscope probe coax cables are very special. They are called intentional lossy because the inner core has a pretty high resistance. This goes back to a famous Tektronics invention long time ago. It allows for high impedance probing in the first place having reasonable bandwidth. It increases the termination impedance of the transmission line.

at 14:50, the resistance measured is the one of the cable itself: its purpose is to dampen the reflections that will occur at the end of the cable. Dave Jones aka Eevblog produced a interesting video on that matter

Altitude specifications are not uncommon in higher voltage gear. Reason is that the air gets "thinner" (less pressure) at high altitudes and the breakdown voltage of air decreases. If the first resistor inside the probe has a certain length to withstand 2kV/30kHz at sea level it may arc over when the dielectric strength of the surrounding air decreases.

you've read my mind with this video! just recently jumped into electronics, grabbed an IWATSU oscilloscope from my fathers basement, but without probes. had to jump into researching what is what and who is who, asking shops and such. ended up ordering similar probes and started playing around. anyhow, you have your lousy but yet very much technical style, and since i bumped into your videos, i have higher expectations towards others. keep it up!

Congratulations for the new probe and the oscilloscope! You reminded me of the days when I was in Germany, I bought once three of those from the Flee market (very similar) and as I had little experience then, I resold them in ebay for 10 - 20 Euro each.

8:49 This is the most concise and thorough explanation of probe compensation that I have ever seen on KZfaq. I bought a pair of these a few years ago from Amazon, but never glanced at the manual. Up to 30 KHz at 2000V? They certainly understand the modern market for passive high tension probes, which is primarily audio valve amplifiers. I'd feel comfortable probing the output valve plates of a Bassman, Plexi or SLO with these probes.

I have bought similar 1:100 probes from eBay and was also pleasantly surprised by the working of them. Use them all the time for measuring in SMPS and Ultrasonic equipment. You still need and isolation transformer of course on the SMPS under test.

They're nice if you have a couple of disposable oscilloscopes around. I bought a total of three of these and destroyed 1 Channel of an old Hameg(412?) Scope and both Channels of a Tek 466 with them. The third one just broke and stopped working after using it for less than an hour. So yes, they do work, just don't try to measure anything reactive above 800V or so, but maybe I just had a streak of bad luck. According to a known good HP probe and a 1 GHz Scope the peak never went above 1.2kV, so I'd take their specifications with a cube of salt. I'd rather pay 200€ for a probe that won't break my scope.

What I love about my tiny Tektronix 224, it that it's probes are isolated from ground and from each other. I don't have to worry or use isolation transformer. Although the scope is old and only 60 MHz, I love it and find myself using it a lot more than my new Hantek DSO4182C Chinese crapola. I use that crapola when I need its 50MHz built-in function generator.

Great explanation, I completely missed the circles of wire, shows that you shouldn’t believe a thing the advertisement says, test then believe. No high voltage tests, I was waiting for those, can it really measure 2kV safely and if it’s a high voltage spike, I guess the bandwidth will attenuate it or will it pass it through to the scope. Maybe you can connect it to your Tesla coil, that looked like a nice high voltage test ;-)

18:15 this is when I realised you accidentally had the standard 20MHz bandwidth limit on both channels, it happens. 20ns was an awfully slow rise time for a 74HC part and for a x100 probe

You can make a surprisingly fast rise pulse generator by avalanching a BJT, some are better than others but even a 2N3904 is sub nanosecond. Usually looks something like a high value resistor charging a cap of a few pf connected to the collector, signal is taken across the 50 ohm emitter resistor, base is pulled down with about 10k. You can add a flat top by replacing the cap with a coax stub to act as a delay line.

Could you possibly make a HV Test with this probe? Possibly with a microwave transformer and CFL inverter? I dont really get why the voltage rating of the probe goes down with frequency, the capacitors or resistors wont heat up so I would assume that the probe would simply draw more current from the probing circuit but it shouldnt cause a flashover? Am I wrong? I havent found any good data on this. I was planning to get such a probe but i am a bit suspicious off it, I mostly built vacuum tube gear so such a probe would be very nice to have, especially for that low price

I remember seeing a review of a similar ebay purchased probe a few years back and the person doing that found inconsistencies between allegedly identical probes (e.g. Same manufacturer) from the same seller, something to watch out for.

altitude rating is because of the high voltage... planes with magnetron-based radars regularly use pressurised waveguides, otherwise they'd arc all the time in the lower pressure

nice, I have a pair of those 100X probes from aliexpress and they work great, I mainly use them because I feel more confident that a voltage spike wont destroy the oscilloscope, like when I power a 12V relay and when de-energized the relay, the coil spites a -300V spike from the collapse of magnetic field. Only switch to 10X or 1X when measuring really low voltages or when fine precision matters. They combined with one of those small portable oscilloscopes make a great tool to check electric stuff like UPS and power inverters on the field.

I bought probes with similar specs from Hantek and tested it with 60Hz with a hipot tester. It shorted out just below 1kV AC. You must not believe the voltage specs of these Chinese things. Be careful! I got a pair of them and threw away both right after the first one failed the test.

The x100 probes stop working. For voltage-noisy investigations I now use a vintage valve scope where I could feed the signal directly to the Y plate...

Try 'scoping the collector of the line output transistor in a black and white television, it should be a good test of a x100 probe without enough energy to cause any damage.

I personally made a purchase of the 4ch GW-Instek MDO2000 series 'scope & i have found myself using my old early 1980s era Tektronix probes simply because the trace looked better! Now i am going to have to recheck what is truly happening & why.... (a mistake on my part no doubt).

Certainly less expensive than active probes for my Tektronix TDS 540. It has the funky TekProbe-BNC connectors, which seems to drive the price for active probes truly stratospheric -- and the 'scope has four 500-MHz channels. Not really into "black magic" territory, though I suppose it doesn't matter if I can't afford to play down here in the dirt anyway, i.e. sub-GHz frequencies.

You should test your new probe with MOT + variac to be able to see maximum voltage the probe can handle Can it handle 2KVpp?

I'm surprised you haven't made a DIY function generator! You should. If you have a phone with an old school earphone plug, there are some kick-ass function generator apps for both Android and iOS. 74AHCT14 Hex inverting Schmitt trigger IC is a great IC to have around if you want to generate fast and sharp transitions. I think t-rise or t-fall in under 5ns. if anyone knows a faster rise and fall time of a Schmitt trigger IC, post a reply with a part number.

I bought a 100x for mains measurements too. I was not comfortable to use 10x and maybe destroy my expensive oscilloscope….

Dany. You should make a set of differential probes out of common components. A cheap set is 300 in Canada. Micsig ones. They seem great for the price. You should hit them up for a scope and probes. Perfect for your content. I see alot of dingbats getting them for review and they never use them again. Look at defpom, hes turned into a gear review channel. I offered to buy an lcr meter off him for retail as i was buying one anyway and he has like 8 lcr meters and the guy was a total dick. Engineering channels turn into home shopping network advertisments after they get some subs. They get greedy. I donate all the gear i dont use. I sent packages all over north america for free, no strings attached. You shoukd be a millionaire off your channel unlike electroboom who makes crap content.
