Welcome to Ian's N Gauge channel!
While I may have been taking a break from posting videos recently, I’ve remained quite involved with the hobby, and last weekend I visited the London Festival of Railway Modelling, that was held at Alexandra Palace.
Thanks very much for watching.

Hi Frank! Yes, it was an excellent day out! It was definitely worth taking a look at the floor plan as the show was spread across two large halls, with retailers, manufacturers and layouts all mixed together! Cheers, Ian.

Hi Ian, really enjoyed the video and a good overall review of the show! Its so hard not to splash the cash on what is so many temptations that seemed to be there at the show! I have already put my pre-order in on a couple of Revolution trains 'special' GBRf livery class 66's which I am looking forward to receiving later this year, so it was good to see them in your video. I enjoyed the layouts montage that you put together 🙂. Looking forward to you next layout video, hopefully soon? Cheers Gary

Thanks very much Gary! Yes, there were many tempting items on sale, and I was quite surprised at how restrained I was! I don't think you'll be disappointed with the Revolution Trains 66's as they looked incredible! If they run as good as they look then they'll be exceptional! I look forward to seeing yours when you receive them! I'm planning on working on the layout again from next week so hopefully there'll be a video out next week! Cheers, Ian.

Glad you had a good show, Ian. First time visitor and was glad when it calmed down at about 2pm, as you say, it was a bit busy when we got there at 11am. Nice to see lots of retailers, I came away with quite a bit of gear, but all in kit form. NGS Shark plough and Seacow kits, and Peco Grampus and iron ore 27t open wagon kits. Already had a refresher on your Peco kit build video. 😂 Also, some paints, coal for wagon loads and a large magnifying glass to go with my stalky high intensity light. Hopefully catch up at a future show, don't forget your rose! 🤣

Good morning Nigel! Yes, it got a little easier as the afternoon went on, but by that time I was out on my feet, and had photographed all of the layouts I wanted to! Sounds like you're going to be busy building kits this year! The Peco kits are easy to put together, although that will change when you come to paint them and add decals! I couldn't do without my magnifying helmet with light as my eyesight is terrible - not sure why I chose to model in N gauge! Lol! Yeah, hopefully we'll catch up at another event - with rose! All the best, Ian.

Hi Stephen! Yeah, I may do a few smaller ones myself this year! I always only used to do smaller local exhibitions when I was in the hobby years ago, so this one, and GETS last year were my first two big events, and they were both incredibly well attended, to the point where it was frustrating trying to view the layouts at times! The advantage of the bigger ones is that there are lots of retailers there, all tempting you to spend your hard earned cash! Lol! All the best, Ian.

Thanks Ian. That was a nicely presented view of yet another exhibition I have not managed to visit. I particularly liked the layout names left on screen, and the useful and easy-to-follow commentary with the random sound of the crowd suitably diminished in the background. I like Chris, would also like to go to TINGS, but I have bit further to travel. As to model railway population decline, there are many retiring people just starting out to replace the sad loss of venerable modellers, although the highly-priced fragilely-detailed offerings may put off more than a few. Looking forward to your next video... Paul
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 3 ай бұрын
Hi Paul! Thank you very much! I too plan on going to TINGS one year, hopefully sooner rather than later! I think the rumour about model railways declining in popularity has been around for years, and shouldn't be taken too seriously! There were certainly lots of younger kids at the show, who I'm sure will remember model railways when they're old enough to afford them!!! I'm not sure that even if prices dropped by half tomorrow the hobby would be greeted with a sudden influx of teenagers joining, as they're too attached to their "devices" at that age! However, like you say, as people reach retirement, and want to try something different, they often look back on their youth for hobby ideas, just as I did! As such, I think that the hobby of railway modelling is far from dead and will continue well into the future! All the best, Ian.

Evening Ian ! Glad you had a good time at "Ally Pally". Now I'm expecting all the track , points etc to be down in your next layout update 😂. Did you say Revolution had their 66's for sale ? I picked up their 59 at MRS last month. Just one very minor running issue - which I have been told how to fix - so I'm eager to get my hands on one of their 66's. 😊cheers Euan

Good morning Euan! Yes, it was a very good show! Haha! I've done just about nothing on Shelfington since taking a break from making videos! I hope to start again in earnest next week though! Yeah, Revolution had the 66's priced up, so I'm assuming they were being sold! They looked fantastic! If only I were modelling a different era, I could be broke by now, especially with the 59's coming along, and the Farish 158's available now! Hope a 66 comes winging your way soon! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, Good to see you back!.This thing about the hobby dying, honestly, it looked mobbed as was GETS when we went there, and the way things run out quite quickly on new releases at retailers. It could maybe do with a few more youngsters but to be honest it’s probably only when you get older that you have the cash and acquire that extra space you need to build a model railway, still only my thoughts on the subject…🤷🏻‍♂ Looks like you had a good trip though and some nice little purchases and you self control was amazing!!! I do quite like class 47, it’s a bit different which is why i like it. Sadly I couldn’t go as my dad had an operation on that weekend, and subsequently passed away on Tuesday. I will probably have a video out next week but will probably take a little break after that. Cheers for now Ian, John

Hi John! I'm so sorry to hear about your dad mate, my condolences, you and your family have my deepest sympathy. Yeah, the retailers and manufacturers were running out of things at this show too, in fact, I haven't got my brake van yet! The 47 is a little too early for my era, but like you said, it's different - like the brake van - so I was ever so tempted by it! It was quite heartening to see quite a few youngsters at the show! The organisers had provided step stools so they could get a better look at the layouts, which I thought was a brilliant idea! Hopefully they'll remember their experiences when they get older and come back to the hobby when they're not so glued to their phones and tablets! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian. I too was at Ally Pally on the Saturday. It's a shame we didn't bump into each other - it was really crowded in the morning, thinning out in the afternoon (was there an organised meet for KZfaqrs?). I also was seduced by the Class 10000, but I got mine from TMC. I spent most of my time looking at the trade stands and did look at Revolution Trains. I must have overlooked the Class 128 or just dismissed it. I have now ordered one online, but *note* there are only a couple of suppliers that have it (55993 in red) in stock.

Hi Paul! It was a shame that we didn't run into each other! I don't think there was an organised meetup, but it's difficult to know unless you follow everybody! Ooh, you got the 10000? How is it? They look fantastic! The 128 in Royal Mail livery was also a good looker, but I was sure I'd seen it cheaper online! Indeed, I see that Kernow have it for about £20 cheaper than Revolution were selling them for! They have a speaker pre-fitted, so I'm thinking of sound fitting one! Enjoy your new locos! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian - Glad you had a great time at the show. I last went to the one before and I am sorry you did not see many N Gauge layouts. I think there was about 8 when I last went. Likewise I went to the Warley show at the NEC centre two years ago. I enjoyed both shows but no more for me, reason being is apart from Dapol, Farish and a few other retailers there is not really a lot of N Gauge there in my opinion. Even worse when you go to the stallholders they tell you that they dont bring N Gauge to these big shows as it is not worth their time financially. If you do find some they tell you 'oh its in the box over there' and it turns out to be a load of damaged items thrown together in the box. So no I will not be going to either show anymore, especially the NEC show which normally means an overnight stay, no I will save all that money spent on fuel, hotel, food and the likes and save it all up for The Internation N Gauge Show knwn as TINGS. Its so refreshing to see everystall holder selling N gauge goodies, lots of bargains, loads of club layouts. It really is a fantastic show. Ok travelling up from Chichester to the Warwickshire Event Centre is a bit of a pain, but I always go up on a Sunday, hardly any traffic and to be honest and its an easy pleasent drive up the M27 and A34. The show is out in the countryside so no worries regarding parking. The show is brilliant with lots to see and purchase but never too crowded and can be comfortably seen in one day at the moment as I can see this show getting bigger in the future. Having saved on not going to the other two shows I can spend it all up there which to be honest could be in the region of in excess£500 not including fuel. Regards Chris

Hi Chris! I understand what you're saying! It can be annoying for us N gauge modellers sometimes! However, while there wasn't many N gauge layouts at the show, there was plenty N gauge stuff to look at on manufacturer and retail stands! Bachmann, Rapido Trains and Revolution Trains all had new and existing N gauge models on show! Digitrains, KMS Railtech, Trains4U, The Model Centre and The Wagon Yard were just a few of the retailers who all had a good selection of N gauge stock too! Of course, the N Gauge Society were also there with their excellent range of stock! I've not been to TINGS, but it's definitely on my list of shows to attend in the future! I'm also planning to visit GETS again this year as it was a thoroughly enjoyable, if busy show last year! You're right though, attending any show, big or small can eat through your cash quickly, so it's good to pick and choose the ones you go to carefully! All the best, Ian.
