Thanks for the time stamps. How long (roughly) does it take to teach a new skill?
@ShadowTheRat
@ShadowTheRat Жыл бұрын
@@Tobithepurpleducc It depends on the trick, the rats prior training experience, your prior training experience, the rat personality, your training environment, and a load of other factors. I try to keep training sessions to 10 minutes or less, and try to train wit each rat at least 5 times a week (if not every day). I'll always pick tricks I know the rats can either pretty much master or at least make significant progress on each session - so for example for the fetching from a closed purse trick I wouldn't have them attempt that until they had the prior tricks of fetch and pulling string down first. Anyways for the easier tricks like spin, new rats often get them down on cue in 5-10 minutes. That being said if you want to generalize that cue, it takes more practice over longer period of time (so that it becomes long term memory for them). Usually I will train the easier tricks first and once the rats have them down on cue I then switch to using their known tricks to help mix up future sessions - so I only really spend one session training spin for example but I'll often cue it to break up harder training sessions like fetch, meaning spin itself gets more reinforced and the cue becomes more deeply known as well. But I caution you not to try and push for a certain time frame for any trick, because that can easily lead to frustration on both sides. Of course you do want to make progress each session, but depending on the variables above you may find certain tricks take longer than others, and that's okay.

It's going to take a while to get to the end of this but you really should have your own show or be a paid trainer. You always make things look so easy. You communicate with your rats like no one else I've ever seen. I can't believe how many years I've been following your channel now. Not sure where the time went but it has been a fascinating adventure and never a dull moment. I still show people your purse, wallet dollar trick and people are so amazed that they are smart enough to learn it. You are still my favorite KZfaq channel. Thank you Esther for bringing both the good and fun days as well as the heart breaking ones where you had to say goodbye to your friends as well. You have opened the eyes of some people that thought they were just stupid rodents. They are amazing with the only down down fall of a short life.

@John Ernest The reason her videos are so good...is because she is NOT working for someone else. Your "paid trainer" idea would destroy everything good about this channel. It always amazes me, when someone is successful, it's never enough for some people, who want them to go on regular TV, which is a death sentence to creativity. If you think TV is going to let her do videos like this, think again. It's all about $$$ to them.

I've used many different things, from sunflower seeds, wafer paper, and meat baby food (seen some in the older clips with Shadow and my first rats here) to my more current cheerio and gerber puff bits and plain yogurt along with several other things. Currently I stick to plain yogurt and cheerios mostly, but anything that is quick to eat and not too filling or unhealthy works well.

Lol I swear this video sucked to make just because my computer can barely process so much footage - poor thing was practically unusable while processing, so of course I had to do it 5 times either because it got stuck or because I put a video clip in the wrong area. Luckily most of these clips came from prior mini-tutorial videos and were just things I had to compile, but about 30 are new tutorials and just sticking them together was not as easy as I was hoping. I'm glad to have it there to reference now, which is its main purpose (I initially just compiled these to see what tricks my website needs added, but I figured why not make it a full video after all that)

Rats have a hidden tremendous Intelligence and Emotional complexity that the world doesnt yet know. If the world knew, they would immediately ban tests, cruel rat traps, painful poisons and stop torturing them if theyre pests. Same for a lot of other animals.

Its such a fun trick and they really enjoy it - I'm thinking with my current young rats I'll try transferring it to my hand, so they can do hand rebounds like dogs do! I haven't worked rebound with them yet but I find with young rats or just fit rats they tend to pick it up pretty quickly - just make sure to use a sturdy surface since when I first taught it I used something wobbly and tat made my rat wary of jumping at it, so it took much longer to train it since she developed a habit of hesitating.

Whenever i give my rats a reward as i’m training them, they tend to run off with it... I’ve fixed this problem by dipping a cheerio in baby food or applesauce (or just using my finer or a popsicle stick) and having them lick it off as a treat. As far as you know, does using a liquid treat for training have any drawbacks?
@ShadowTheRat
@ShadowTheRat 3 жыл бұрын
If you overdo liquid treats they can lead to soft poop, but otherwise they tend to be just as good as any solid treat with the benefit of being more motivating and something your rat can't run off with. The only downside I've found is with tricks that require the rat to not be able to eat the treat right away - for example you can't train backup with liquid treats because they will just eat the treat instead of backing away. So instead I use small bits (think 1/4 the size of a cheerio) for rats that are still iffy on sticking around with solid treats when training those sorts of tricks, and as time goes on and they get more experience being trained they tend to stop running off and will stick around for even large solid treats.

whenever I teach my rats tricks they tend to have trouble when I start pulling back on the lure.
@ShadowTheRat
@ShadowTheRat 3 жыл бұрын
That's probably the hardest part of using a lure. I've found the easiest way to avoid issues with removing the lure is to never repeat one step too much - always try to ask for a bit more, working up continuously until you reach the final trick. I used to get stuck teaching tricks like spin due to overdoing the first few steps when luring them but I've found if I try and push a bit more each time we avoid any confusion and they get the cue down much faster.

I am literally blown away by the amount of effort both you and your ratties put into this video. I have one of my rats mastered spin but with my other two and with the one, just keep getting distracted and move on to something else. Are there any tips on how I can fix that? Also, should I be training them all together or one at a time? Thank you so much Esther for your time and effort to provide these videos. 😊🥰🐀🐁
@ShadowTheRat
@ShadowTheRat 3 жыл бұрын
You definitely want to train one at a time - they just distract each other too much otherwise, and splitting attention between multiple rats also makes it harder to reward the exact things you like. If you want to train a trick with multiple rats like vs basketball you want to teach each rat their part of the trick first, and only once they are performing it perfectly do you want to add in another rat. As for as getting distracted a lot of rats tend to be pretty distracted for their first few tricks. It helps to work on following a lure or target first as its own behavior, because this way they know that following the treat/target will always eventually get them the reward, plus they can focus more on what they are doing for the reward. Otherwise focusing on easier tricks that don't have too many steps at first is really helpful - tricks like paw, spin, jump to hand, backup, come, jumping hoops, and other similar tricks are great for this. Usually once they get a good 3-5 tricks down they start to really concentrate, but it can be a bit of a learning curve until then. The nice thing about the tricks I listed is that even if your rat runs off after one repetition, you can still make progress each time (which is difficult with more muli-step tricks that require more concentration on the rats part. Finally I recently made a video going over some training basics (not so much detailed trick tutorials so much as going over ideal training environment, treats, methods (luring, targeting, shaping), clicker training, generalization, and a few other things. I also have a few examples in there, but mostly it goes over everything you can do to set the rat up for success: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZ52qraQ0L-lnqM.html

What treats are you giving them for training ? ..so they don’t get so full and walk away..? This video is amazing and you have the most extreme patience!!
@ShadowTheRat
@ShadowTheRat 3 жыл бұрын
Mostly cheerio and gerber puff bits, along with plain yogurt. Honestly though any treat that is small, easy to eat (try to aim for it taking 3 or less seconds to eat), and not too filling will work. As for them not walking off that's actually more due to habit than them being especially hungry or such. You don't actually want to use a treat that's too high value or have the rats super hungry because that will just distract them. Instead you want to just work in small bits whenever they are willing and let this build over time to a good training habit. Once they have a good 5 or so tricks down, that's when you really start to see them concentrate for longer periods and pick up new behaviors super quickly.

Awesome thanks so much... !! I tried yogurt for sure none of my rats like the Greek ones.... i’ll cut out the treats into smaller amounts.. back in the old days my Rats would run free and I’d walk through the door at 5:30 and they would be waiting for me like mommy food!! But after my brand new couch got chewed , carpets, and my door base got chewed... grounded... I actually set up my whole place to prevent any electrical cord or outlet ... rat proof the whole house... even toilet....but can’t rat proof the sofa and doors... ugh!!

Any tips for training boys? My boys are so easily distracted and one of them who we've had for a few months has only just gotten used to us so he runs off or becomes uninterested faster then our other rat. We unknowingly taught our older rat how to kinda fetch (gotta teach him how to bring it back) how to climb, and tug of war with just with the bond we have (no clicker or treats he just knows gestures we have no idea how it happened) it seems as though when we added the treats as an option he just eats the treat and doesn't register the click means treat or doesn't react to the click at all. They are also not interested in liquid treat. Any suggestions for these issues?

Age doesn't matter so much as confidence - I've trained 4 week old rats and 2+ year old rats alike and they can all learn very well. Confidence in the area and you is what really makes training easy or harder though and so a well adjusted rat that is confident in their area and with you is going to be the best candidate to train.

@ShadowTheRat
@ShadowTheRat 3 жыл бұрын
5 of the rats shown here are feeder rats :) Those rats would be Oreo (black hooded, feeder bin baby I got at 4 weeks old and started training then), Biscuit (champaign hooded, Oreo's sister and also got her and started training her at 4 weeks old), Espresso (russian blue hooded, Oreo and Biscuits sister who was also gotten from a feeder bin at 4 weeks old and started training then), Bean (mink bekshire, she was bought by her prior owner as a feeder but kept getting rejected and grew too big so she was finally given to me at 14 weeks old, which is when she started training), and finally Coconut (standard pink eyed white, gotten by her prior owner from a feeder bin as a pet, rehomed to me at 9 months old with her cagemates when her owner couldn't care for them anymore. Also started training when I got her at 9 months old). All that is to say feeder rats are no different than any other pet rat and can learn everything seen here. In fact Bean and Oreo were 2 of the BEST trick rats I've ever had (mastering tricks faster than any other rat), and Espresso, Biscuit, and Coconut were also amazing to train with and super friendly rats.
