I had asked you about the audio quality...well I got my own BlackBox now and let me say...the audio is fantastic, output and input. Sampling synths directly into the BB is incredible. The preamps are HOT and pro level. This is the best purchase I have made in music gear in the last 40 years. This little box is a wonderful way to add sampling to any studio rig. I am 100% hardware and fits my rig 100%.

Loopop, dropping in here from "the future" to say thanks so much for this great review and so many others. After KZfaq shopping for a sampler /groovebox / nerve-center for the last two months, watching and rewatching your videos - I bought this machine and will no doubt refer to this video often as I get underway with it. For me, it came down to this, a Digitakt, or the MPC One. Ultimately the Blackbox's UX, lean form factor, and very adept use of modern day computing power won the day.

After watching your very intuitive video, I purchased it using your Reverb link above. I've been using a myriad of devices to load samples, and other devices to create weird jams. This fits perfectly above using the Novation Circuit or below a PC DAW for me. I know there are other devices that a similar, but they are either too advanced (electron) or do not fit into what I need (Roland 101, 707). Love the song mode, and chromatic feature. I've gathered samples for well over 25 years and a computer screen just wasn't cutting it for me to load them. Thanks again for the awesome walkthrough.

@@loopop So after extensive use, and now on firmware 1.4.0 this device is truly amazing for me. The workflow is super easy. It's like an enhanced sp404 with multiple ins out, and the sequence options are really quite intuitive and easy to use. The granular synth is really interesting, but the option to instantly chop up a sample across a keyboard is really fun. The myriad of chord modes is also a great welcome. I hope you get to review this device again with all it's new features. The effects are still the same, but one can easily add more externally.

Workflow really on point. Pretty much all the operations. Compact, well featured, robust. Superb choice for gigging. I can see the usefulness for both popular and avant-garde. If Akai had got 1010 to do the UX for MPC Live who knows how good that might have been. I want one.

When exploring parameter value ranges, I suggest you explore the full value ranges (like in timestretching) for the audience. I have the 1010 Toolbox. Entering notes can be a bit of a pain sometimes. I'm considering a stylus because I have big fingers as well. What 1010 really gets is making access to parameters quick and intuitive. The learning curve is always very low and no damn hidden button press combinations that's the bane of a lot of digital modules. I think on the forums 1010 alluded that some of the features from BlackBox might wind up where they can in the Eurorack modules. I believe they stated that the processor in BlackBox is more advanced than that of the Series 1 and Series 2 boxes. I'm holding off for BitBox II. They'll want to do something in Eurorack with this.

Hello Miguel, I have an AKAI MPC LIVE, but for my taste the piano roll sensitivity is not good, this is the main feature I need. Is the 1010 piano roll sensitity and workflow good? Have you had the occasion to compare it to the MPC LIVE?
@miguelgjesus
@miguelgjesus 4 жыл бұрын
OldSkool Synth Boy I’ve had an MPC controller before, but the one that was mostly a controller, so the piano roll was in the software, so in the laptop screen. The Blackbox has a very small screen instead. Sure, you can zoom in to see and input the notes, but it’s not really something I use that much unlike you would in a MPC. Think of the Blackbox as a step above the Electribes but not trying to be an MPC. In the end I use it the most to load loops and immediately sync them to the tempo while triggering other drum sounds

Am I right in guessing that there is only 1 bank of 16 pads? The blackbox NOT having sample banks for the 16 pads is a massive deal breaker and, for the price, very limiting.
@noiseworks
@noiseworks 20 күн бұрын
you've got 16 stereo samples, any of which can be multisamples. Each pad can contain 64 individual samples (mapped as a multisample) per pad, up to 80 per preset. it's really not a hard 16 pad limit (albeit not the most elegant workaround to always implement)

Does CV recording capability mean more or less that you can record a modular patch as voltage on this unit? I'm thinking that you can sample several modules in terms of voltage, put them on the blackbox grid and then patch the blackbox to whatever modules, as if you had the units that generated the CV.

Well, the black box in a plane is usually painted orange, sooo... ;P

Looks like the only ones who get it right are Valve. They sold the orange box and it was actually orange.

The color gray has black in it. So... Or maybe it't made of a new kind of material that ripens, like a banana. The units will all be black... before you are ready to eat them.

@@MisterNiles But that would mean they could paint it black and call it Graybox.

Im thinking about getting one. A thing I didnt find out yet is if I can use the audio input as a "thru" for another device to daisy chain and if I can put then effects on it. Also is the compressor capable of doing sidechaining?

I tried it at Superbooth. Excellent sound quality and the USB host feature makes this a very interesting box. After power-up, it loads the first preset in the list (in alphabetic order) if I understood correctly.

Can the loops play back at their own separate lengths - free running so to speak - one looping every 1 min another 33 sec and so on? As an ambient producer, I’m more interested in non metered time where samples phase instead of match up with each other the in the same way every time they loop. As an example of work flow - can I have a few loops with different lengths playing back while sequencing an improvisation over those loops?

This blacbox is really interesting but there are few key things missing: FXs, EQ, Compression, Automation, etc. If you wanna create a song, you need all of these resources to be working (and 2 fxs isn't enough, we need filter, distortion, etc). This could potentially be added via firmware upadte. In that case, it would be a "take my money"...

Thank you for the introduction to this...hard to describe in one word; sampler/sequencer/MIDI instrument? I have been searching for a hardware sequencer with near zero latency and unlimited length loop/measures, add to that all the sampling features and multi outputs and we may have a winner. The one thing you did not dive into is the clicks (sample start) and lack of ADSR to control the clicks. Without more control on the sample start we may have a real problem with clicky sound, eh???
@loopop
@loopop 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! There is ADSR - clicks are only an issue if you want to loop a portion of a sample and don't take the time to look for good looping points - which as I mention takes time (and isn't fun...). It would certainly be better if they automatically implemented zero crossing detection or fades.

This device is so well thought and the controls generic that I think it was designed to have updates for years to come. My guess is just wait a bit and it’ll probably do it.

Ricardo Abreu I hope so! If they implement 0 crossing detection and CC sequencing, I’ll be a buyer.

Would have been nice if you could use the recorded CV voltage to modulate a sample on another pad - like an LFO maybe? Maybe LFOs will be in future updates. I love this thing.

1. boot time? 2. in sequencer, can you drag the notes you enter so that they aren't lined up with the grid? 3. When you play a midi piano into it, does it automatically quantize? or is it actually natural to how you play? 4. plug in a battery/portable options? 5. Have you tested maxing it out? Ie having lots of long samples until it cracks?
