After its unveil in 2017, last June Mercedes-AMG revealed the production version of the AMG One. This long period of time has been necessary not much for the development of the car itself, which was already in its definitive form back in 2017, but to make road-legal and 'daily' usable the complex F1-derived powertrain.
The ICE is a modified Mercedes-Benz PU106 Hybrid engine, a 1.6-litre turbocharged 90-degree V6 engine used in the 2014-2016 Mercedes-AMG F1 Formula One cars (W05, W06, W07). Modifications were necessary to be used on the roads, both in terms of emissions (lowering the RPM's idle), durability (reducing max rev limit) and practicality (for example the use of normal petrol and not the one used by teams on their actual F1s). The little V6 produces 574 hp at 9,000 rpm.
The ICE work in conjunction with four electric motors. Like on modern F1 cars it has a MGU-K and a MGU-H. The MGU-K serves to generate electricity during braking, while the MGU-H serves to eliminate turbocharger lag, improve throttle response by keeping the turbine spinning at high speeds and to recover wasted energy from the exhaust. The final two electric motors drive the front wheels to allow for an all-wheel drive drivetrain, and the sum of these four electric motors will contribute 360 kW (483 hp) effective power to the total power output figure of the AMG One.
Being a plug-in hybrid car, the One can travel even a few kilometers in zero emissions EV mode.
The transmission is a 7-speed single-clutch automated manual transmission. The use of a single-clutch over a dual-clutch transmission was due to AMG's engineers wanting to keep the car light and due to concerns over the dual-clutch's ability to handle the high-revving V6. The body is made entirely of carbon fibre, resulting in a final kerb weight of 1,695 kg.
The AMG One has six different drive modes:
- "Race Safe" mode, which features a hybrid driving mode with all-electric start up. The ICE will switch on only when a higher power is required.
- "Race" mode, hybrid driving mode with a special charging strategy. The combustion engine is always running and can charge the high-voltage battery more, so that full electrical power is always available.
- "EV" mode, all-electric driving.
- "Race Plus" mode, which features active aerodynamics, front diffuser flaps folds up to shape, rear wing is fully extended, front fenders vents opens up, lowers the car by 37 mm in front and 30 mm in rear, chassis tuning and special performance management.
- "Strat 2" mode, which features all "Race Plus" changes, additionally with firmer suspension tuning and full electric power from all electric motors.
- "Individual" mode allows the driver to set the car settings as per their personal preferences.
In "Race Plus" and "Strat 2" modes, the total vehicle downforce increases by up to five times when compared to other drive modes. Also, the car features Formula One's Drag Reduction System (DRS), reducing the vehicle's overall downforce by 20 percent from lowering the rear wing flaps and closing the front louvers to increase straight line speed. DRS can be turned off manually or automatically from applying brakes.

This is because they discharge unused electrical energy from the hybrid system to 'torque fill' the gear changes. So the mechanical gear changes can be slower and smoother and the E-power gives a kick to fill the gap in power delivery.

@@SmallBlogV8 I know that's the bullshit they fed to Chris Harris when he test drove one and it kept freaking out, but it's nonsense. I think they have major calibration issues. Here's a novel idea ... dump the "excess energy" into the brakes, like every other manufacturer does. No field/load on the motors during decell = no "excess energy" being generated. Brakes have worked pretty well on vehicles for a long long time, wouldn't you agree?

Este auto para lo que cuesta y todo lo que tiene , sus prestaciones dejan mucho que desear la verdad, y mas si su motor se debe reconstruir a los pocos km.

Thanks for the great vid! Yes, its unbelievably hard to get a high performance drivetrain into a road legal chassis…but looking at the Pricetag, production-/ and development time it‘s kinda disappointing to see such low performance numbers - especially when you consider that the battery has to be fully loaded to bring somewhat of crazy performance…but that lasts also for 2 laps or so. Yeah, conditions weren’t perfect on the Nurburgring but that time, the weight and the slow gearbox are just disappointing. Look at the Valkyrie: fast gearbox and an emotional experience are possible. Really expected more from a company like amg/ mercedes.
@mitchell-wallisforce7859
@mitchell-wallisforce7859 Жыл бұрын
If Mercedes wanted raw numbers and the absolute fastest supercar possible, they could've engineered this chassis around the twin-turbo V8 from the GTR Black Series and dropped in a KERS system for torque fill or something. Affalterbach themselves probably know this car isn't the best they could do, but there's a certain amount of clout that comes with having an F1 engine in the car. I'm pretty sure this is a car that exists for the powertrain instead of the other way around. With that in mind, some context: F1 V6 engines produce about 750-800 of the 1000 horsepower a full F1 powertrain makes. So even when the battery is drained, this thing will still be obscenely quick. Also, the Nurburgring lap was set in ice-cold, slightly damp conditions - "less than perfect" is putting it VERY lightly. As for the weight, there's all this: www.thedrive.com/news/lets-talk-about-why-the-mercedes-amg-one-weighs-3737-pounds TL;DR - Making cars is hard. Making road-legal ones is harder. Getting a road-legal supercar to pass some of the world's strictest emissions tests with an engine that was never meant for road use is completely ridiculous. Bozzy also explained the gearbox situation pretty clearly - very few transmissions on this planet can handle F1 levels of RPM, and the ones that can would not survive 10 minutes of road usage. As for the Valkyrie.....it hasn't even been _seen_ all that much since it was launched. This comparison is between a car that barely shows its face and hasn't set a verified lap time at any circuit anywhere, and a car that has actually proven itself. Maybe it's just me, but I don't care if the Valkyrie has a V12 that revs to a billion or anything - the AMG One is the one that has actually set a Nurburgring time, so it is objectively the more impressive supercar. Do not get me wrong, the Valkyrie has wowed me every time it has shown its face. It sounds incredible and even looks the business. I'd take one in a heartbeat. But until it sets a timed lap at a race track, it won't measure up to the AMG One. And let's not play games by talking about "involvement" - everyone who knows how much that matters is in a Honda S2000 or something else with a clutch pedal, anyway.

The gear shifts are intentionally slow bcos the electrical system generates so much power they need somewhere to send it, so they use it as a torque fill on gear changes, and also save weight by using a single clutch gearbox. This car is infinitely more advanced than the valkyrie

Love almost everything about, besides how fucking quite that V6 is, imagine if they give it the V12 which is in the Pagani Huayra R.... that will be just otherworldly. But let's be honest, that car is just an experiment to see if they can make the F1 powertrain work on the road and I think they succeed it, still it's needs to be louder, atleast as loud as the actual F1 cars, the most quite ones ever, but still louder than that thing.
