FOREST OF DEAN WALK FEATURING NEWENT AND ACORN WOOD
"Newent and Acorn Wood”
Filmed 16th July 2018
Post-production completed 9th December 2018
On the northern fringes of the Forest of Dean lies Newent, which grew in importance from Roman times as both a centre for iron making and a market. The surrounding countryside is well-known for its abundance of wild spring daffodils, but as my walk to nearby Acorn Wood demonstrates, the rolling countryside is beautiful all year…..
Filmed in the Forest of Dean in the county of Gloucestershire. Locations include Newent, Acorn Wood, Clifford’s Mesne and the International Centre for Birds of Prey. This is part of the series of films in 2018 celebrating 25 years of “The Solitary Rambler”.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.

Superb Patrick. I pass through or by Newent to be more precise regularly as it is around 30 minutes from my home but do from time to time stop for a walk around. The town oozes history and feels like a place where two worlds merge. The church is beautiful as are the many local walks; the Daffofil Way being a favourite of mine. The view of the Malverns is breathtaking. Thank you for another inspiring episode. Paul 👍😊

Hi Paul and thanks again for your great comments. I guessed you'd probably be familiar with this neck of the woods. Lovely place Newent so really nice to return after so many years to film this. That was indeed a great view of the Malverns, another place I need to go back to. Think I may have walked some of the Daffodil Way you mention before now, certainly recall doing a walk around Dymock and Kempley once. Anyway thanks again Paul. All the best to you. Cheers, Patrick :)

Wonderful. Patrick, the amount of research alone that goes into these films is staggering,I'd never heard of the town but it was lovely and you had so much to tell us about it. The walk was lovely,I love how you show us how you carefully close the gates knowing you have to go back through them to pick up your camera and tripod. The music ! Beautiful how in every film you have a theme and stay with that theme throughout, sometimes slower tempo, sometimes faster, and with different instruments, like the orchestral sound through the woods,or just the flute,as always you did a great job on the music and the whole film was a great watch. Thanks. Pete.

The work on these films does take up so much of my free time, hence my thoughts of wanting a break soon, but the work has been worth it and I wouldn't do it of course if it wasn't enjoyable for me. It's also really difficult to come up with new music for every film, so it's always experimental so some of the music works work, others less so. Anyway as always Pete many thanks for watching and commenting :)

Newent looks to be a gorgeous small Gloucestershire town, Patrick. I'm totally impressed with the stylish architecture of the place. The market hall on its raised beams is a most unusual structure, indeed, and has survived the centuries very well. I like the Tudor style of the building and some of the adjacent ones. The onion fair seems a most unusual event in the town, but it must be a great to attend. St. Mary's church is a lovely place with it's tower and spire. The woods look lovely, and the surrounding countryside is very picturesque. Thank you for this grand video, Patrick. Merry Christmas and a walking prosperous New Year.

Newent is a nice place, very Tudor in style with its old black and white buildings. Never heard of the onion fayre until I did the research during the making of this film. Hope you've had a great Christmas Ffranc and a Happy New Year 👍

A thoroughly enjoyable walk that Patrick. I was relaxed from start to finish. I've been through Newent many times on my to Gloucester fro swimming or shopping but never really took it in. It is beautiful. As you walked I could swear I saw vineyards - it looked that way anyhow. As for the 'Birds of Prey' center I've yet to visit. I will do that one day. Well, very pleasant indeed. Take care Patrick. Mark

I thought you would probably be familiar with Newent Mark, so pleased you enjoyed this one. I think you were right about the vineyards. I went to the Birds of Prey centre a long time ago, but I do remember well how the staff would have the birds resting on their arm then allow the bird to fly off and return again. Thanks again for watching Mark. All the best. Cheers, Patrick :)

I do have a huge backlog to edit when I can. Anyway thanks as always Frank and Lee. Cheers, Patrick :)

14:17 this completely closed down when covid happened and remains abandoned now, only see construction vans parked there occasionally so no idea what they are doing with it. It's a good thing its not open because this stretch of road has to be among the most pothole ridden in britain it is absolutely ridiculous and i avoid it at all costs unless absolutely necessary. Newent has also died a lot.

@@solitaryrambler it's just a sign of the times changing rapidly. I've only been in this area for 4 years and it's not been good. We've got an abandoned half built housing estate next to Newent school now as well. The company went bust!!.
