Live the rest of your life in a day-- One of the perfect Tull phrases. You, sir, are full of talent and hard work. Ian’s voice has been blown out for a very long time-not until the Thick as a Brick full on tour a few years back did he use a singer to replace him. I nominate you. Send him your resume. Been a Tull fan forever-turned 25 at the end of the seventies. So my unformed teenage brain was assaulted yearly with a new Tull record. I viewed a Martin Barre interview on utube recently during which Martin talked about recording a song with Paul McCartney. He said McCartney gave him the music and the lyrics at the recording session. He said that nobody with Jethro Tull ever knew any of the lyrics to any new song they recorded. Ian went in when all the music was recorded and sang the lyrics. Who would have thunk that? Thanks for all you do with Tull songs. Fantastic!

Brian Esq.: I must agree -- 100% "Fantastic!" And Lord Wood of Anfield: U have so superbly persisted and indeed succeeded in your investigation of the several quintessional or quintessential attributes of your & my perchance favorite Tull single/song, well among my top 4ish! Brian -- as a gesture of greatest respect and appreciation from each/both of us I have meant to gift our most valued friend Stewart one of your Great Books from my bombshelter archive. Just maybe we may each/both receive post-pandenic backstage passes to the House of Lords next London visit?✈🇬🇧 On another note Stewart I very much enjoy following you in other media venues like your recent participation on the BBC(?) panel on a certain minority no longer attributed as one? Brian I will share/forward it to you if I can find it. Cheers!

You absolutely owned it! One thing I notice is your precise time-keeping in this one. And I loved the peek into the tune's construction, inversions, in your closing remarks, as well. I've been aware of this one since 1972 or so, not liking it at first -- rather disturbing at the time to a naive twenty-something. But I really admire this one, now.

Hard not to comment as I enjoy going thru your incredible repertoire of Tull songs. This time (or any time) I have to say that although Im a mere mortal, a consumer and Tull-o-phile, your guitar work is impeccable. Rich and warm, while precise and intricate. So impressed here - but more than anything grateful for all these songs you’ve posted.

Great cover - specially the part "Get out and get what you can..." - you menage to cover the bass line in the same time with rhitm guitar cords! My favorite Tull single from preAqualung era - contains all elements of Ian's later musical creations!Thanks for your excellent comment of the song! 👍👍👍

Absolutely on the money, as ever and thank you for it sir. Until you deconstruct it, it's so easy to to take this extraordinary composition for granted, it being a mere 'pop' song...(!) Not to mention the syncopation of the strings on the recording, shifting behind and on the beat, reinforcing that sense of unease you talk about. Just such an excellent version, yet again...

That was really sharp playing Stewart! Interesting how it changed slightly over the years with different players with different bits being enhanced keeping us on our toes. Excellent discussion at the end as usual, explaining exactly why Tull is my favorite band. It's over here, over there, that surprise part shows up now then goes into this...- completely mind stimulating and the best part of it is that it always works so perfectly. A five man symphony. Obviously no one else in the music world in history had/has the capability to author such brilliance. I had a drummer friend in college who really liked Barrimore Barlow (but wasn't a Tull fan in particular). When I asked him why Barrimore, he said because you never knew where he was going to go next. I think that pretty much mimics your analysis and why we all can't get enough of it.

Not too shabby, especially keeping the rhythm tight while singing...I battle with that. A couple of corrections that I think you'll appreciate. On the main verse chord progression, you've omitted the Am chord before returning to the Em. The progression is Em D/F# F Am. Play the F# on the 4th string 4th fret over the D major chord then F then strongly accent Am with two stabs before starting the progression over again in Em. More importantly, on the bridge verse ("you hear my voice is calling..."), rather than F barre chord, finger Dm add2/F (1X323O). Use your thumb to hold down the 1st fret on 6th string. Stunning chord. Try it...you'll love it and end that progression with D/F# (Thumb fretting 6th string 2nd fret over D major).

Many thanks for your helpful comments. I’ve tried both your suggestions. The second one - you’re right, it does sound better with a D as a 6th added to the F chord. Thanks! And that is a lovely chord I agree. The first one I don’t think I agree with you on, though. I think that chord is a Fmaj7, with an E at the top. I don’t think it is an Am because the F is important to it. As I play it on the video I am a bit lazy with the top E, though my finger isn’t on the top string. If I did it again I would bring out the major 7th ness much more. Many thanks again for your kind words!

@@DailySporran It's amusing that we're disagreeing over a semi-tone, but please Stu, listen again. The bass guitar rolls on the low E throughout the progression at the start of the song and on the first repeat and on later repeats resolves the progression on A. (No F) The penultimate chord is an F, so there has to be a resolving chord and resolving from F to Fmajor7 isn't great. The lead guitar doesn't play the final resolve, it ends on the penultimate F - maybe that's what's throwing you, but listen to the Bursting Out Live version where Martin resolves on an A C double stop - there's no F. So we've got instruments resolving on notes A and C and E (No F) I've got the sheet music and there's no F in the resolve. Also, check out kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l72JiKeB3qi2fg.html This man being a medical doctor is a perfectionist for accuracy (even more so than I am) and I played in a Tull cover band. If you're still not satisfied with Am then might I suggest muting the 4th string X0X210 - that works.

@@taab7 Its odd that I still hear that F. As you say it may be a carry-over from the previous chord, and I hear it as a drone F continuing into the ACE. But when I play it on a single guitar, taking the F out loses something for me from what I hear in the recorded version. Maybe it's my ear at fault. The only solution to this is for us to continue the discussion over a pint some time when Covid allows! Hope all is well & thanks again for engaging with this.

@@DailySporran Cool Stu, would be awesome to have a pint with you but I live some 9000 km away from the UK. Came up with this variation this morning for added bottom end for single acoustic guitar for the verse progression. Em Dadd2add4 554030 Fmaj13 133200 Am. (Yeah, i'm sticking with an ACE resolve or even Am add2/E 007500). Let me know what you think.

Lord Wood thanks you so much for your amazing work. This song is sheer brilliance. Can't forget the intro to the 1979 tour with Barre's thundering guitar. What a moment. Just one qustion, if you may, why didn't you play the 12 string? This is one of the few songs Ian plays 12 string on.
@DailySporran
@DailySporran 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Karl. Funny you should ask - I did try it on the 12 string yesterday. The opening riff works well, the rockier bits less well. I have a recording of me doing it that way too. Maybe one for the Daily Sporran outtakes in 10 years (for an audience of 6).
