Welcome to Ian's N Gauge channel!
In a previous video I showed how I'd made some progress with the tricky bit of track work behind the scenic break board by working out how I was going to install servo motors to control the points.
In this video I’m going to show how I've further progressed the work and how I’m very close to having the first permanently fixed down pieces of track work for Shelfington.
Thanks very much for watching.

Slow and steady is the best way to go about it. I love that you can just take out a small section to work on at the bench, that's really clever.

Yes, I totally agree! Slow and steady will win the day! It's difficult to reach the rear of the layout, and I'd never have been able to install the point rodding had I not been able to take the sections to the workbench! Once they're installed though, it'll be permanently, hence wanting to get everything right now! Cheers, Ian.

Hi Ian, Great to see a bit more progress on this part 🙂 I've found that pretty much every stage so far in my own building has taken longer than it seems it ought to, and it's often compounded by finding that I need different tools and materials, have to shop for them, wait for them, and then wait for the next bit of free time to try using them! Having points going off the board isn't intuitive, so that mistake was easy to make, and I certainly sympathise with anyone who'd accidentally not stuck to plan at some point 😉

Thanks very much Jonathan! Yeah, things just seem to conspire to slow you down don't they? Haha! Yeah, that point going off board will go through the gap in the scenic break board, but you're right, I think my brain was telling me it was wrong, and compensated for an "obvious" mistake! That's my story, and I'm sticking to it! Lol! All the best, Ian.

Slow and steady wins the race. Hi Ian, it's looking good, and making sure everything is just right will reap rewards when the time comes to 'play trains'. Really enjoying these little updates, keep up the great work. All the best Allan

Thanks very much Allan! Yeah, I'm in no rush, and taking things slowly rather suits me! Still got a way to go with The Tricky Bit, but am already starting to ponder how I'm going to implement the curved inclines! Cheers, Ian.

Good to see the progress Ian. It’s good that you’re tackling the more complicated section first. I left my trickiest bits, the double slips, for ages and they sat there like a sword of Damocles, daring me to try and lay them. The servos and point rodding seems to be working very well. Stephen

Good morning Stephen! Haha! Yes, I certainly don't want my tricky bits taunting me! The more I think of it though, once I've finished The Tricky Bit, there'll be another tricky bit, with the curved inclines needing to be installed! I'm really pleased with the servos and point rodding, and can't wait to install some in the scenic area, where they'll be below the foam, and hidden completely - which is another tricky bit to achieve! It seems that this railway modelling lark is quite a tricky business at every stage! Lol! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, more good work completed - heck of a "to do" list😂 Thanks for the update. Chris

Thanks very much Christ! Yes, that to-do list is a bit disheartening, knowing I'll have to pull up the track again, and disconnect the point rodding, but it'll all be worth it in the end! All the best, Ian.

Evening Ian - we have track (well almost 😅 ). You'll probably find You'll get faster at laying the track as you begin to accumulate your "track laying miles " 😅. All good stuff ! Cheers Euan

@iansngauge 2 ай бұрын
Good morning Euan! Haha! Almost there! I'm hoping to get faster as the sections become less trickier, i.e. less point rodding! I've got inclines on my mind at the moment, which are bound to slow me down even more! Oh well! Thanks for your support! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, it’s amazing how slow things can be especially when you first start laying track and frustrating to as I know I just want to get on! You’ll find though once you get through the tricky bit, (i have a few of those myself!) you’ll move along at a good satisfying pace. As for the Dremel versus Xuron track cutters I still prefer the Xuron. I just think the dremel feels to big, I’ve even used the the flexible extension which did make it a little easier but the cut although good still needed work so I use the Xuron cutters most of the time now. Keep at it mate that tricky bit will be done sooner than you think. I’m off for another trip to the tip later this morning, there is so much stuff in the garage, I’ve already done two trips and I think they’ll be be a few more! Have a good weekend, cheers for now, John

Good morning John! Yes, it's quite frustrating how slowly things are going, but I'm in no rush, and I'll eventually get it done! Once the tricky bit is installed, I've got to start thinking about inclines, which will also be tricky seeing as they're on curves, but I'll figure it out! Yeah, the Dremel is difficult to get into position over the rail to cut it completely vertically! I've also got the extension, but haven't used it yet! I've also got a bigger cutting disc that I'm hoping will make it easier to get the Dremel or its extension into position! Thanks for the encouragement mate, I think I need it, especially with this part of the layout! Good luck with your garage clearing endeavours, and enjoy your weekend too! All the best, Ian.

As with all things Ian - slow and steady is expected from you now, as I know you want to do everything correctly, and methodically. For me, the only annoying thing is where were you when I was starting out? If these videos had been around back then I would have used your slow and steady example as the blueprint of what I should have done. Ah well, when version 3 of Lyng and District appears, it will be based on your work I am sure! A great video for anyone starting out mate! Regards Steve
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Ай бұрын
Haha! Thanks Steve! That's very kind of you to say! Sorry I wasn't there for you when you started! Lol! I think we're polar opposites when it comes to build speed! It's definitely helped that I've had my test track to keep me amused during my many musings, but that'll be going away when I start on the curved inclines, so we'll have to wait and see if I get a spurt of speed over the summer months when I've finally completed The Tricky Bit! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, looking good. I'm not sure if you covered this before, but have you considered mounting the servos lower into the foam and running the rod over the top of the servo arm instead of underneath? Cheers
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 2 ай бұрын
Hi John! Thank you! I don't think I've covered it before, but I need the push rods to run below the servo horn so that I can remove the horn, and the servo itself, for servicing or replacement! Running the push rod over the horn would make it more difficult to remove everything! However, in the scenic sections, the servos will be completely underneath the foam, so I'll be able to "cap" them with either plasticard or greyboard! I still need to finalise the details of this, but no doubt there'll be a video about it! :) All the best, Ian.

That is a tricky bit and very well sorted out. I will either be using the hand of god or a simple rod and tube and the hand of god.

Thanks Simon! I thought about going manual for point operation, but this section will be behind a scenic break board, and underneath a hillside, in a tunnel eventually! I may stick with manual operation for my marshalling yard, as I don't think I'll be automating anything there, but we'll see! All the best, Ian.

@@iansngauge I'm on a pretty tight budget so have to be careful about how I allocate funds. Wish I could go full electric points and have a fancy board with all the switches on. But there is nothing left in the budget for it. I need £600 for insulation next. I might have to sell a kidney 🤣🤣🤣
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Ай бұрын
@@ngaugeonashelf4417 - Oh, I fully understand Simon! This is an expensive hobby, and has many temptations! It's one of the reasons I've gone for one of the cheapest ways to electrically control the points! Those servo motors cost less than a couple of quid each, and I'm planning to control several of them using an Arduino, which cost around the £20 mark! It's always best to keep as many internal organs as possible in my experience, but if you need the insulation for the loft... Lol! Cheers, Ian.

@@iansngauge That's a very good deal and you've done the job so well putting together those parts and making it all work. That kind of job is beyond my skill level. Perhaps I could sell the wifes kidney while she is asleep????
