Welcome to Ian's N Gauge channel!
If you've watched the channel regularly you'll know that I've always wanted a rake of Pullman coaches on one of my layouts, ever since travelling in one during my childhood.
In this video, I’m going to show how my desire to create a Pullman train in N gauge has progressed.
Thanks very much for watching.

Good morning Ian, money well spent I think, it’s now a fine looking rake, although it was before to be honest…🤔😁. I really liked them behind the class 50 an engine I really like and had sound fitted to mine, which again was rather expensive but kind of worth it. I must become a member of the Bachman collectors club and re-join the N Gauge Society something I keep meaning to do and then forget about🙄. Not much done on the layout this week, well nothing actually… been building a Scalescenes small fishing boat though, but it’s garden today and another trip to the tip from the garage project which is ongoing nicely. Have a good weekend mate, cheers, John

Good morning John! Definitely money well spent! I know what you mean about the rake before the new addition, but it just bugged me that I didn't have a brake coach! I'm very pleased with how the 50 performed, and have been considering trying to sound fit mine! I think Bachmann Collectors Club and the N Gauge Society are both excellent organisations to be part of, if not only for the exclusive models you get access to, but also the informative periodicals they send you a few times a year! Ooh! Looking forward to seeing the fishing boat, and hopefully the empty space in your garage!!! Good luck, and enjoy your weekend too mate! All the best, Ian.

Ian, OK.. you have now persuaded me to order one as well for the same reasons.. I will now have a complete 7 coach rake but have a Brittania and Duchess to pull them, although the idea of the Blue Deltic protoype instead.. that is tempting ! Great content, keep up the great work. Many thanks Mark

Hi Ian - Definately worth the price you paid. Items like this as you say come along very infrequently and now that you are a member of the N Gauge club no doubt you will spend even more on certain items when they come along. I know I have made it worse for myself covering Southern Rail (western) ERA 3 & 4 in N Gauge but I have made some fantastic purchases of discontinued stock. Yes it has been expensive on occassions but in my opinion well worth it if you want to make a collecyion complete. In the end Ian its not about retaining value, its all about what you want, need and can get that makes you extremely happy when you see it attached to a similar rake and your case is a perfect example. Regarding a Dapol Flying Scotsman, I made an impulse purchase and have a brand new one, but having decided on area and era it doesnt really fit in if your still interested in purchasing one. I dont think I live that far from you? Regards Chris
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Ай бұрын
Hi Chris! I agree, if you want it, and can afford it, and it makes you happy, then get it! However, it's better that if what you get retains its value for the future, and this certainly isn't the case with most of the stuff we purchase! At the moment I'm modelling BR TOPS era in the 70's and early 80's, but it's nice to know that if I decide to go "modern image" or "the big four" in the future, some of my stock will have a decent resale value! Thanks for your offer of the Flying Scotsman, but I'm going to wait until I've got the A4 first! I've heard so many horror stories about Dapol's tender drive mechanism that I want to experience it first hand before getting another one! All the best, Ian.

Greetings, Shelfington, and hello Ian 👋 I definitely agree about it being value for money 💰 👍 and beautifully detailed 🤩 my only gripe 🤭 is I wish it had a white roof 😲 to match the rest of the rake 🫣 I do hope you haven't been playing trains when you're supposed to be working on the tricky bit 😇 Very best wishes from the Emerald Isle ☘️

@iansngauge Ай бұрын
Good morning Wickford, and hello Paul! Yes, I think this particular coach will retain its value, if not increase in the years to come! I wondered about the darker roof too, but couldn't find any info about it! Haha! The Tricky Bit progress has stalled again while I pursue less trickier things! Lol! Hopefully I'll make some progress with it before the end of the month though! All the best, Ian.

Good to see bachmann coming up trumps for you Ian. I did wonder if a swift purchase would be made by you when I saw the Bachmann summer announcements. It does complete the rake and looked great running around the test track. I suspect that all the locos you mention would have pulled the Pullmans either on the East or West coast main lines. Even strictly out of your period for service trains you can always run the rake behind the steamers as a heritage tour. Stephen
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Ай бұрын
Hi Stephen! Haha! Am I that predictable? Don't answer that! Lol! Yes, after a bit of research there's evidence that A3's, A4's and Deltics all hauled Mk1 Pullman coaches on the East Coast main line! If I end up with Kettles hauling them, they'll be on summer excursions, which is how I ended up being in one back when I was a kid back in the late 70s or early 80s! All the best, Ian.

I've got 5 of those, I bought them a very long time ago. I've been looking recently to get another rake and there are plenty of them about but they are a bit rough. That looks really good Ian, probably better than my 25 year old coaches. Cheers

Hi Simon! You definitely have to be careful when purchasing these Pullman coaches second hand - as all of my other Pullman coaches were! Remember the problems I had with The Hadrian Bar coach? This new brake coach looks amazing though, and I'd thoroughly recommend picking one up while you can, as I can only see the price rising on the second hand market once they've sold out! Cheers, Ian.

@@iansngauge I'm certainly more inclined to buy new. I've had a rake off ebay that I thought was good only to find they were knocked about too much. No, make that 2 rakes.
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Ай бұрын
@@ngaugeonashelf4417 - I've actually been quite lucky with buying from eBay, and most of my other Mk1 coaches have come from there, with only The Hadrian Bar coach being defective! I managed to get a part refund for that though, which I invested in fixing it! I don't mind paying £40+ for a new coach if it has some quality, but baulk at the price when paying for tooling that's over a decade old! Cheers, Ian.

@@iansngauge At least my old ones haven't seen any use being in the box all this time. Not got the detail of the newer ones but they will do me. I think the biggest issue with handling is what is in our skin. Dulling the paint and taking off transfers. I try my best to handle things where I wont do that. Simon

Hi Ian I too am looking to build up a Pullman rake, although my preference is for the older 'K' type Pullmans (as used on the VSOE train etc), although I'm waiting to see if the Revolution ones are anything like "affordable" for me, otherwise it will be the GF ones from ages ago...lol. P.S. I do like the new Bachmann Collectors Club one, so may well buy one after your excellent review! Thanks
@iansngauge

Hi Pete! Yes, the K type cars are very nice, and even the old GF ones still look pretty good! If I were a betting man, I wouldn't be holding out hope for the RT ones to be cheap, but I'll bet that they'll be incredibly detailed! I'm very impressed with the new Collectors Club coach, as you can probably tell from the video, so would thoroughly recommend it! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, what a lovely rake of coaches you have collected. I know very little (ie nothing) about Pulman coaches, just wondered why all the roofs are white except the brake, is there a reason for this. Good to see continued progress on the layout.

Hi Nick! Thank you! It has taken a while to collect the rake, but I'm reaping the rewards of my patience - and luck! have recently been picking up older OO gauge stuff, compared to that they are very basic, amazing what N gauge has these days. looks nice with the rest of them as well. as for rake length, well you have the full to to rattle through or a smaller one that can stop with a coach in a siding for "maintenance" etc if you go for the rail tour look very nice, and inclined to agree on the value, not cheap but in good condition will likely hold value pretty well
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Ай бұрын
I've actually got quite a bit of old OO stock dating back to the 70's and 80's and it's amazing how much more detail there is in the N gauge stuff produced today! Yes, I'll probably run the full seven coaches as a "non-stop" service that will appear on the layout every so often, and then have the odd coach on maintenance, as you suggest! Yeah, I'm convinced that the brake coach will hold its value as they've only made around 500 of them, so they're going to be quite hard to find in the future! All the best, Ian.

The problem is that no Pullman brake end coaches were ever built. If you were modelling in 00, you need the old Hornby K Cars brake ends .The Mk 1 sets were used on the Master Cutler Services ,then they moved to the western region for the South Wales Pullman to cover for the Blue Pullman .
@iansngauge
@iansngauge Ай бұрын
@@jonathanstangroom8489 - Thanks for the info Jonathan! They may not have been made as Pullman cars, but Mk1 BCK's were certainly painted in Umber and Cream and given the Pullman detailing! They were also used on the Tees Tyne service on the East Coast main line! I believe that the K series Pullman brakes had all been withdrawn by 1968 or thereabouts... Cheers, Ian.
