Welcome to another 10MARC Review. This week I take a look at the new iBrowse web browser for the Classic Amiga. It also works on PPC Amiga, but I won't be talking about that here.
I will be talking a bit about AmiSSL and your TCP/IP stack too, but if you want more details about that, I will link to a video about that below.

Bought Roadshow yesterday. Very, very nice. So much more convenient than Miami. It's ridiculous how many modern conveniences you can get on even a classic Amiga today. Going to try the iBrowse 2.5.4 demo today, and see if it's fast enough on my humble A1200 with 68030@50MHz and 32MB FastRAM. I've read a few places that it's really slow on anything below a 68040, but we shall see. Thanks for providing good Amiga related content :)

If you stick to things like Aminet and other simple websites, your system will be just fine. There is a simple graphics front end for road show that I really need to try out. It really needs one by default so you can just choose some of the settings, and the gui will then write to the appropriate files.

@@10MARC Yes, I really do have the impression that it's all about expectations. I tried the demo version of 2.4 in the past, and that felt really quite quick to me. On several forums, I saw people complaining about 2.5 being so much slower, but I've just had a look at Aminet, and impressively enough the English Amiga Board, and to me, they both seem impressively quick all things considered. A 50MHz x86 with Windows certainly wouldn't be this fast. I do feel that the registration cost is a bit steep, but I think perhaps I'll treat myself. As for networking, I'm still a bit unsure about the difference between the CNet.device and CNet16.device. I'm currently using CNet.device, but is the other version faster?

It really is hard to see where they were coming from with this price, and who they thought their market was. I suspect that the reason you don't hear many people talk about the new iBrowse is that not many people took the plunge and bought it. We are a small market with only a few thousand potential buyers, so nobody is going to make a fortune here, but they could sell hundreds if they priced it better.

Another lovely video. Very helpful. (Sorry I’m not very imaginative with my praise but it is meant) Fully agree the price of iBrowse. For what is a hobby for (almost) all of us, 60usd is just hard to justify to our already very forgiving partners, 30usd however and I’d definitely grab a copy. For now I use Aweb and FTP client software that came with roadshow (command line only, although there’s some great ftp software with guis available). I have to say that I’m very happy with my purchase of roadshow definitely a worthy consideration. I got a licensed amitcp when getting my fantastic individual computers network card but find roadshows speed and transparency worth the additional purchase.

Nice review for a great Amiga coding efforts I only tested the demo version of Ibrowse 2 5.2 and it works pretty well on my Sam440 with AmigaOS 4.1 .. its probably the faster browser ever released, however it's hard to consider it a real alternative to other NG solutions such Odyssey or NetSurf until it didn't support any of that pretty needed modern web technology like CSS, latest javascript etc.

You would be surprised at all the new hardware and software being released for the Amiga! Lots of new and exciting stuff every month! It does a mediocre job with new websites. Great Video Doug, good to see whats possible, I agree with the cost, especially if it's not going to be your main browser. Let's hope it gets resolved soon, small incremental payments for upgrades would be far better, you'd get alot more people upgrading each time and eventually over years, the dev's probably get paid what they asked for and more.

Good point, Kevin. The work you do for the projects you work on for the Retro community are certainly worth more than you are paid, but the reality is that we have to be flexible with these communities. I certainly have lost a ton of money doing my show over the past year - it would have made better financial sense for me to only concentrate on actual business, but I do it for the love of the community. There is money to be made in this community, but few will get rich.

But I personally don't want an os 4 version! As now the developers sells Ibrowse and doesn't know what version is the best seller of the 2. That's really stupid! Next version will be aimed to OS 4 even if 90% of customers buy it for the OS3 one?

I remember the first time I got my Amiga 2000 online as painful as it was it was still cool. At that time I was using a CBM A2065 network card with an AUI to Ethernet Adapter and at 10mbs is painfull but it allowed me to transfer files on my network. I changed that out with an XSurf-100 with a Rapid Roads USB Board. My A2000 has an A2630 with 130mb RAM. I also put an XSurf-100 with Rapid Road into my A4000/040. I am about to install a network card to the Vampire in my A600. I have PCMCIA Network cards I can use on in my A1200 which has a 68030 and 72mb RAM. So hardware wise I could easily run iBrowse and the money is not the issue but my making use of the software is. Having watched your video and Chris Edwards and the things he has been doing I am somewhat leaning towards making the purchase but I am still on the fence as you can understand and its not an issue of not being able to afford the software. I love my Amiga's and I told my kids when I pass if they just go and sell them off I will come back and hunt them and not in a good way.

Here is another Idea (I also think it is a little bit pricey)... I don't know how to do it technically yet, and it would suck Amiga network bandwidth (which is already not that high) but in their Browser (not the displayed HTML page) reduce the clickable icon size (which are huge) to display (I don't know what the image sizes required by Google to get "ads revenue" but why not have a continues ads running under the menubar in between the HTML page? Maybe it technically could be done by running a custom webserver that streams the ads IBrowse? Hell it could be a Android app on a custom server maybe that redirects it's contents to IBrowse? anyway the technical parts could sure be worked out... I would not mind (every mobile app I use has some form of ads anyway) so adds running at the top corner would not bother me... Maybe they could get loads of money and the Amiga users get a superb browser for "free" :-) Ah well just an idiotic idea :-)

I would like it better if it would work. I have used it on my A4000/060/66 MHz with 140 MB of RAM and it hardly functions, and on my Vampires. Again, it barely works. I can maybe get to one website one time, and then nothing from the program at all.

Man the inconsistency in your Amiga’s icons is driving me crazy! Defaults mixed with newer icon packs. Man I tried for ages to bug iBrowse 2.4. I actually own a legit license for a previous version. Oh there’s an upgrade path! Sweet! You mentioned not being able to access Gmail through iBrowse, but surely you can still access it through POP3 on YAM. Also... Stop making videos that tempt me to spend money!

I keep my icons mixed up only to drive you crazy, Pacbilly. Hope you don't mind. I do have Gmail set up in a mail program via IMAP, but it used to work just fine with iBrowse. Now just neverending JavaScript hangups.

@@pacbilly you bet. Let me look up the name and send it to you. I switched away from YAM because of lack of IMAP. The other one I use is still being developed, too.

Hi doug, i have some trick who irritate me lol ! , I wanna do same you, put the clock on my desktop, right click , leave out , but when I reboot she's gone ! , snapshot also don't make any difference.i'm on classic workbench 3.1 , the commands are little bit different, "leave out" is not on top menu but on the icon (right click), if you have a idea.and I search how to put website on buttons :) edit : ok I find out for shortcut ! awesome !!
@10MARC
@10MARC 4 жыл бұрын
Right clicking an icon and getting a context sensitive menu is not a thing with standard AmigaOS - you must have a commodity loaded that enables that - there are a few. The traditional "Leave Out" should be in the second menu at the top of the Workbench screen.

Did you try to use dropbox with it? I wont pay 59 bucks for this update, really. My demo version that I’ve used for years works ok for me, could as well use the 2.5.2 demo. 30 bucks? Maybe. 20? Yes

I do use Dropbox with my Amiga - My Google Drive, too. I bought that software back in 2018 and it works so well! Some of the folders on my Dropbox can get pretty big, so if I use Workbench to open a dropbox folder it can take forever, but doing it thru the Shell works brilliantly.

10 Minute Amiga Retro Cast I tried the Dropbox program, the demo version. It worked but I’m not sure if you need to enter the login code/number every time you start it. Dropbox is one of those apps I could pay for on the Amiga

@@MallaganVloggs no - once you get the big long key code from Dropbox and put it in the correct file and folder, you don't have to touch it again. It works so nice!

... right, they left money - the price is to high. I downloaded the demo version. and I got the 2.4.2. if I realy need to browse longer. Bad, but I would buy it - but 59,- EUR is far to high... The point is correct - the new Workbemch 3.1.4.1. is cheaper ... Will write an email.
