This week I am starting a new mini series covering the basics of the Amiga Workbench and how to use your Amiga for something else than just an awesome game machine. Part One is all about the Workbench, Part Two will cover the Shell (CLI) and some of the "under the hood" power of the Amiga, and Part Three will tie everything together and introduce some of the best third party utilities to use with your Amiga.
This mini series is designed for people just starting with the Amiga, but everyone will hopefully enjoy the information.

Thanks. Covid got me re-interested in my Amiga. I always wondered why the Workbench screen could scroll down. For multitasking. The rest is pretty much self explanatory if you have used computers as long as I've been using them. (since 1988). A little funny side story, Back in the 90s I went to a career day for school and I met this guy who told me about this new invention called optic fiber. I went home and told my parents about how good it is for fast transfer of data. And all it's future uses. In Australia back in 2010 Australia started doing fiber to the home, and now I can watch a movie theater quality movie on my tv in the lounge room. We have come so far because of the technology from 1985 onwards.
@10MARC

At least something good came out of the Pandemic! Glad you are back in the community. Cool story about the Fiber optics! I still like the Amiga's ability to create its own screens of different resolutions, and easily jump between them. Even Windows 10 cannot really do that very well! (if at all)

Windows did not catch up (in my opinion) until Windows 95. The fact that Windows 3.1 really needed a 386 to run, and Workbench 3.1 could run just fine on a floppy based 68000 really shines a light on how efficient our OS is.

Thank you for this simple video that permits to new users to show in a very didactic way how Workbench works and that offers a good reminder for all those who have not used the Workbench for years. Of course Workbench can't be compared to modern OS nowadays but it was more revolutionary and powerful that it seems back in the 90's as a lot of us just used it to quickly launch apps or games installed on HDD. The 'onion peels' system remembers a lot what we now use on our smartphone to swap from a screen to another, isn't it? Even with old Workbench 1.3 in 1990, Amiga was already doing this. Just try. You can launch Delitracker for exemple to play music on WB screen, load some games like Sim City and Shanghaï, Then Deluxe Paint IV to display a 640x512 picture, a word processor in 1280x512 (if you have at least ECS) and why not a slideshow using Visage or PPShow. As long as you got memory, you can continue like this and if you slide public screens using the toolbars, you will see all these resolutions and hundreds of colours on your monitor! Amazing when you think about the other OS of the same area. Nowadays, we can say that we are very lucky to have such an operating system to enjoy all that the Amiga can offer: pictures, musics, videos, demos, games ...
@10MARC

This is so true - The Amiga could do things in the late eighties and early nineties that other OS's just could not touch. I was digitizing photos in 4096 colors on my Digi-View while Mac users were dinking around in four shades of Gray and PC users were dealing with maybe 16 colors. And I was multitasking while doing it!

Another great Video Doug. I'm always amazed by how advanced the Amiga OS was in it's day (even today to be honest). Back then the other camp was using MS-DOS and windows 3 and then 3.1 which just pales in comparison. It was only when Windows 95 came out in erm, 1995 that things started to shift although I still prefer AmigaOS 3.1 it was only when I started using Windows 2000 in 2001 for work that I thought that the tides had changed.But the simple elegance and efficacy of the Amiga OS still stayed with me. I think your video gracefully impressed upon me that fact more than any other.

Agreed. But we needed a fast 486 and a ton of RAM just to do what our Amiga's could do with a 68000 and 2 or 4 MB of RAM. It was an amazing operating system, and still is!

yes, I remember the pain of switching from my Amiga A1500 (rebadged 2000 with 2 floppy drives and no hd ). To a DX4 100mhz with 8mb ram and 1mb SVGA card thinking that this was going to be a vastly superior machine. Well windows 3.1 erm. And then the price of an Amiga to upgrade to 16mb ram. Such a huge disappointment. Windows crashed lots. Irq conflicts, DMA and base address mess. Okay so doom came out, NASCAR Racing, decent to name a few this sweetened that bitter pill. But I never played and tweaked the os or played with utilities like I did with the Amiga and pd disks. The one thing that was an improvement was the 16 bit sound card but where was Octamed? Alternatives where just sad in comparison. Anyhow that’s enough of me reminiscing. Thank you for the great videos.

I got an Amiga 600 back in 1994 at my 10th birthday. And seeing this, it strikes me how easy it was to use. Put in the disc and the game was running. Put another disk in and you could write an essay. You didn't need to know anything about computers, it was pretty easy going. At that time I didn't understand what Workbench was used for, because in school - which was the only computers I knew about - we had an entirely different operating system. And I remember that I found it odd, that in school we had to use one programme to acces another, when at home I could just slide in a floppy... But it's kind of amazing that the Amiga Workbench could do all of these things back in 1985. I mean, I've never found a way of drawing my own icons in windows haha :D What I'm trying to say is thank you - I now know what Workbench actually is, could have used that information 25 years ago ;-)

This is one great tutorial, thank you. I like the relaxed pace and your calm and clear, teacher-like way of explaining things. In a rush of nostalgia, I'm just getting back to the Amiga 500 and this video is a big help. I didn't mess around with Workbench that much back in the day, as I used my Amiga mostly for gaming. Now I got four 500s in various states of restoration (three of them work just fine) and I bought an Indivision ACA500 Plus, that has the Workbench 3.1 on it. I thought I'd breeze through the installation of WHDload, among few other applications and be on my way playing games in no time. Seems like I was wrong and need help like this, to even begin to know what I'm doing! Now the Workbench is starting to look more and more interesting in itself.

IMO the most powerful part of AOS is the liitle known, 256 level "Priority" tool type. The OS multitasks/context switches so fast, you can set a crunching app, like Imagine, or two or three or a thousand crunching apps, below the priority of normal apps else and number crunch at full speed with absolutely zero impact on the overall OS environment and normal application usability. By comparison, Windows 10 completely shuts down, even the crunching app itself becomes unusable. AOS is still 100 years ahead.

Thanks for uploading - I had forgotten most of this, having come back to the Amiga after many years as you envisage!. Maybe you can do a video under WB1,3, mentioning the ARP project and messydos etc? I have tried WB2 on the A500, but too many problems, so I am keeping it 1.3 and truly retro! I also appreciate hearing the order of os version release as i find it confusing coming back to the Amiga. Fyi (for readers) it's: 1.2,1.3, 2.0, 2.04, 3.0, 3.1 (last official commodore version). Then 3.5, 3.9 and finally 3.1.4. there is also v4.1 now but it operates on powerpc processors (which the current generation of Amigas run on) so won't run on pc/winuae, etc sadly.
@10MARC

The Amiga OS 3.5 & 3.9 thing is confusing, but the guys could not get the code for it, so they had to restart using 3.1 as a source. You can actually run Amiga OS 4.1 on WinUAE just fine, as the more recent versions emulate a PPC fine.

True, but nothing else came close for many, many years. Even PC machines did not get real mainstream multitasking for a long time after the Amiga came out. They had their silly task switching, but not Multitasking like the Amiga. To be honest, my Windows 10 machine is only a bit more stable than my Amiga's ever were! Plenty of times I will have Davinci Resolve or another PC program just come up with the dreaded "Not Responding" and crash. The difference, of course, is that it usually does not bring the entire system down with it. Usually...

Thanks for that. I am one of the original users who completely forgot how to do the basics in workbench. I appreciate your video. Thanks also for the reminder and demonstration of how amazing the Amiga was at multitasking and displaying multiple resolutions simultaneously! Shame commodore weren't so good at business management otherwise we would be using much better computers there's days! Back in the day I heard that the Amiga was 8 times more efficient than a pc and i know it could do alot more. The potential was wasted by pathetic companies buying up the Amiga and doing nothing with it (or was it how the conspiracies go? - that the companies bought it to shut it down and thus remove their own pc competition?). If so that should be made unlawful.

Yo Doug! At the 23:30 mark you showed how to disable FastMEM. I haven’t used 3.1 in a long time. I do use that feature in 1.3 a LOT when I play Rogue (several times each week, no lie, in OS 1.3). In 1.3, you don’t have to reboot the machine to get your Fast RAM back. All you have to do is go back and double-click that icon again and it will re-enable the RAM right then and there. It’s not intuitive at all, but it works. I bet 3.1 works the same way, but I can’t test it for ya. Peace! P.S. Definitely getting a Casey Kasem vibe on that voice! :D

Looking forward to the next episode :)

I noticed that after recording about two hours of video! (I edited out a ton of stuff to bring it to 42 minutes). I had changed the fourth color because I was going to record direct to my capture device using Multiscan mode at 31 Khz, but that mode changes color 4 to a weird blue. I changed it to dark grey, and then decided I would just capture the screen direct to camera - but did not change the color back!

Happy to help! ECS comes from a combination of a 1 Meg Agnus and the ECS Denise chips. Both you can still occasionally find for sale. You usually have to make a minor mod to the motherboard (cut one trace, connect another) to get Rev5 and Rev6 A500 boards see the 1 MB Agnus. Totally worth it for the one megabyte of chip Ram. The ECS graphics don't help with gaming, but they add some really great modes including some flicker free modes usable on 31kHz monitors

@10MARC

Go to the WBStartup drawer, single click "click to front" , then select "information" from the Workbench menus to look at the tooltypes for the icons. You will find a tooltype called "qualifier" with maybe "left alt" written there. That is the key you have to hold down when you "click to front". I just remove the qualifier so it does not require one No click only works with some drives. It should work fine in startup. Check its tooltypes too and make sure nothing funky is there.

Your best bet is either to get newer ROMS like the 3.1 Kickstart ROMS. AmigaOS 3.1.4 is great, but requires about 3 MB to run well. You could run version two on an Amiga 500 with one megabyte of RAM and it would work fine. You would have to find the ROM and the software used, but it is pretty commonly available. If you have an ability to burn your own ROM, you could buy the Amiga forever pack and it includes both the ROM and the software fully licensed. Then you could just burn your own 256K ROM

3.5 and 3.9 were fine when they were supported. I used 3.9 for almost 17 years. They are a thing of the past now, as the code for it is missing. The latest version of 3.2.1 actually integrates most of the features that were in 3.9, including the reaction interface. And that is a still supported line of the operating system. 4.01 only works on Power PC machines, and while it is still in the Amiga line, it's a totally different beast. I like them just fine.

At first Windows runs smooth with a fresh installed OS, but after a while it starts to slow down. Which OS makes it possible to fit on a 3.5" floppydisk! Amiga Workbench! Try to do that with Windows! Windows is strongly build around the Windows register and I think there lies the problem of Windows. When the register grows, gets fragmented , Windows gets slower and slower and crashes a lot.
