Welcome to part two of The Amiga Tutorials. This week I am spending time with HD Toolbox and going over how to partition and set up your hard drive and spending time in the Shell/CLI with some important and useful commands. We also dip into the very important Startup-Sequence and how to get into it when things go wrong.

Oh man!! This tip about backing up your entire WB partition is exactly what I needed!! You know, I bought 3.1.4 when it came out but I never installed it because I didn’t have the ROM and decided I might as well wait on the ROM so I could have larger partitions. But I was dreading having to start over with a new CF card. Now I can upgrade without the ROM and when I get the ROM it should be easy to change drives.

A great guide to Amiga CLI. I used to just rename the files in C to change commands to d, del, md, mem etc, but I never knew about alias until today, so I learned something new there. :) Thanks a lot. Hope you will go into some Amiga utilities and even CLI tools down the line at some point, as everyone had special tools they used to use. My C directory has 450 files in there, so some time back I must have collected all these crazy commands from disks and CDs and such.

@@10MARC Like all the nerds. :P Fun aside, your series is a godsend. I was into Amigas and other old computers around 2000 and was pretty good at it but had to sell everything in 2004 because of financial trouble. These days I am better of, sitting here with a bunch of amigas and found out that I forgot everything. Doesn't help that the hardware aged as well. Stuff that used to just work is complicated now. Like crossdoss on an HD floppy drive. I will watch the series to the end for sure.

Actually >NIL is nothing more than a pipe to a null output (hence the name NIL). That tell the shell to not print to normal STDOUT/STDERR, which would be the console output at that time. Which means that you won't see the assign command nor its output in the console when WB is loading. Amiga shell did borrow some nice facilities from Unix; if you use a unix system you may see a similar construct when doing ` > 1&2` for example. The startup sequence itself is kinda like a .bash_rc while the user-startup may be seen as .bash_user file.

In the very late 1980s (89 I think) I was on a Mobil oil rig in the north sea. They were monitoring the drill string on what I was sure was an Amiga. I just wish someone would put me out of my misery and either confirm or debunk this as some sort of alternate universe I had fell into. I think that alternative amiga universe is surely a better place than this one.

Amiga's Workbench startup-sequence sorta reminds me of Linux's .bashrc, it's very interesting.
@ttrep4957
@ttrep4957 5 жыл бұрын
You should have, or at least i would have, put your assign command in the User-Startup file. The easiest way to fix a bad startup-sequence is to copy the one from your original OS floppies over your bad one. That provides a working base system. Then i can add whatever i want one thing a time and test the new item. Usually my problems are in the User-Startup as i put everything there. That's a better place to have issues. Since at least i have a full working base system available to help figure out what is wrong.

I am editing a Cd32 compilation CD, Its a homemade CD, this is CD200, there are CD444 and CD888, it has 200 games on it that run on the Amiga CD32, its is a iso file, it was made in 2003, I have copied its files to run in a HDF file in WinUAE but when you run it, it comes up with a black screen and CD200 icon as its mouse in the top left corner of the screen so can not see if there is error cause there is no Amiga shell showing, is there a way to get the Amiga shell to show on the screen so I can see if there are any errors in its startup sequence..? I am respacing AGS with AGS2(Arcade Game Selector 2) inside it I got AGS2 to work on Classic Workbench GAAE but can't get it to run on this, I might copy some of the workbench files over to it so it can use them, maybe something is missing cause its old but I can not see what happening cause the screen is black so there must be a code 10 on the screen I can't see or something. Dose anyone know what files changes what the mouse pointer looks like, what loads on start-up to change it, on this its a CD200 icon, and is there something that controls the screen and if the Amiga DOS Shell appears or not,I marked off the whole start-up sequence file and it still does it so its something its loading before the start-up sequence...?

directory cache is only suitable for floppy disks. hard drives and especially cf cards are fast enough, so you don't really need directory cache. what do i have to set up for being able to send command to speak: (which is narrator.device/say i assume)? if i try that on my a500+/aca500+ with amigaos 3.1installed, workbench is asking for a disk called speak. narrator.device, translator.library and say utility from older workbench disks are installed already. for selfmade assigns i prefer s:user-startup which is the script file i am tampering with, if i add anything to startup. i only edit startup-sequence if i really have to, if a program really needs an entry in startup sequence (patches for example). otherwise i opt for user-startup. and yeah, redit is the editor i use. :D nil = alternate dimension? :D in other words, nil is simply void. :D

@10MARC
@10MARC 3 жыл бұрын
I would just launch the program from the startup-sequence or user-startup scripts. You can usually safely do this by using the "Run" command before the program so it launches in a new process and does not tie up you shell that the scripts uses. I.e. at the end of user startup: Run work:myprogram/programname

@@10MARC Thanks so much for this advice:) I'll try it right away. My original intention was to change the entire content of DH1: and at the same time not to interfere with the system. @10MARC
@10MARC 4 жыл бұрын
The guys who did Amiga OS 3.1.4 have mentioned that a block size of 4096 is appropriate for CF cards of larger sizes. Be aware that when you add a lot of buffers when your block size is large, it uses more RAM. You should have no issues running WHDLOAD with no MMU. I use it with my ACA500+ all the time and have no issues, and that is only a 68000 chip with no MMU

That all depends on what you mean. If it is a program (not a game) just put it in the drive and Workbench recognizes it. Double click the icon that shows on the screen, and either the program or an installer should appear. If it is a game, most are autobooting. Just pop the disk in the drive and reboot the Amiga and it should start.

@@rogerandrelassen3355 I have a "Retro Budget" that I don't want to go too far past (it is easy to do) - The Vampire is on my radar for my second A500 machine, I just have not pulled the trigger yet

I can't help wonder if we're in the NUL: dimension where all the Microsoft junk gets dumped. Perhaps in the NIL: dimension the Amiga flourished and your counterpart is creating retro videos on the bad old MS-DOS days...

Ah yes... 10 Minute MS-DOS Retro Cast.... Of course when a Microsoft product says something will take "10 minutes" it will either be 30 seconds or 3 hours...
