Nick Laufenberg joins Jimmy and Mark to discuss “custom turrets” for your riflescope - What are custom turrets, how do they work, what are their limitations, and should you get some for your riflescope? If not those, what are some other ways to get quick ballistics solutions in the field? All these questions and more get answered right here!
As always, we want to hear your feedback! Let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

When making charts…. I list 3 different temps on each chart for each load at 32, 70, and 100 degrees. Slit the difference for in between temps. Works great. Elevation change always required a new calibration or chart. Powder temp of round also will make a big shift in MV…. For instance if it’s 70 degrees outside but your ammo has been sitting exposed to direct sunlight for an hour… your cartridge temps may be 95 degrees which means the powder is also 95 degrees which means your burn rate will change and burn faster which equals increased muzzle velocity…. Which equals the shot going high. Adding a suppressor can increase muzzle velocity on a gun…. Not always but it can essentially simulate having a longer barrel.

I feel like there attacking leupold’s custom dial system haha. But they do bring up very good points I don’t wanna pay 80 bucks for every load I want to shoot. Likewise with the atmospheric conditions.

Are Vortex scopes waterproof with the turret caps off ? I own two crossfires and I don’t want to ruin them.

So as to your "limitations", when hunting at a much different elevation, you simply install a different custom turret calibrated accordingly. No issue.

Another awesome topic. I think I might not need custom turrets. Mainly because you get locked into one cartridge. Which is okay. But sometimes, I can only shoot what is available. And, I keep changing which scope I want to carry. My newest rough and tumble hunting rifle now wears the Vortex Crossfire II 3x-9x / 40 mm Dead Hold BDC scope. My hunting areas offer no more than about a 50 yard shot. And light weight scope like that is adequate, about like shooting a red dot. And I just zeroed it with that particular scope yesterday. Before, I had the Diamondback Tactical on and had it zeroed with that quite well. the 6-24 magnification was wonderful and I hit dead on the mark with a hot barrel. And I have gotten so used to the Diamondback. Now, like a bridge before wedding day, I am thinking of putting it back on, even though it is heavier. I just love that scope so much. And I live the Venom even more but it is heavy. Granted, where I hunt with 50 yard shots, I could just dial up two clicks with the Crossfire II, or 3 solid clicks with the Diamondback. And I just don't know. I like the variability and choice of the Diamondback dialing but I like the 14.8 ounces of the Crossfire II. And I could get a dead deer with either one. So, as handy as custom yardage turrets are, I would probably forego. Now, I am tempted to put my Diamondback back on, which means another range trip to re-zero again. Good thing I did not use all of the Federal Nontypical Whitetail .308 Win 150 gr. (My rifle shoots that round .5 MOA on a hot barrel.) Dang it, looks like I am pulling out the torque wrench.

Sadly we do not. We are trying to come up with another solution that could be filled out yourself and stuck into the cap though.

Grab a Revic range finding binoculars, and it will tell you the shoot to distance due to their ballistic calculation.

I just run different Temperatures and altitudes through a ballistic calculator and even my .308 win only shifts an inch and a half between with all the variables at 500 yards so I'm not that worried about it for hunting purposes.

Does custom turrunts affect a BDC reticles in Crossfire II models and would it be economical vs buying a higher end scope ?
@VortexNation
@VortexNation 2 жыл бұрын
A custom turret would have no effect on the reticle. If you are only going to use 1 type of ammo in a similar area or you hand load your ammo a custom turret would be a great choice.

one thing you guys didnt mention is SFP vs FFP, custom turrets only really work on FFP, great talk as always
@VortexNation
@VortexNation 4 жыл бұрын
Actually that's not true - turrets are completely unaffected by what focal plane the reticle is in. Someone using a custom turret is dialing their reticle in order to be able to shoot off the center of the reticle. That single point in space is not changed by the scale of the image or the reticle, so regardless of what magnification you are on with either SFP or FFP, the custom turret will work. It's the information around the center of the reticle that can only be used on one specific magnification within a SFP riflescope vs all magnifications in a FFP riflescope. Hope this helps!

@@VortexNation Great talk as always,,barring extreme temperatures and assuming a 3/4 MOA rifle do you guys think day to day atmospheric conditions at the same elevation and practically no wind would make very much difference in poi out to 400 yards using a custom turret with good ballistic data on the front end ? Thanks !

What about this: know what density altitude your turret was made for, and each day calculate the appropriate adjustment. So on each hunting day you would know "I need to add 10% to my range, so for 300 yards I dial to 330." Would that work? Still seems easier than converting MOA or MILs.
@VortexNation
@VortexNation 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds WAY harder than just using a ballistics calc and dialing MOA or Mils to be honest :)
@roflchopter11
@roflchopter11 4 жыл бұрын
You could do multiple density altitudes in different colors, if offered. 5 colors and 10 yards would maybe be an upper limit, but still reasonable.

Sounds like excuses not to innovate and cling on to the PRS croud. 90% of hunters dont go from one extreme to the other in terms of elevation temp and distance. And a 1moa difference in a double lung or shoulder shot isnt a deal breaker. Just admit you dont like hunters and we can all keep buying leupolds.
