I heard about this particular scope on a podcast that was about Vortex and included Corey your Optics Manager or one of the two Chris's, but they went into depth about the new gen Light Hunter Tactical scope. I really do like the feature set that it has, but without all the extra weight causing extras. The illuminated reticle can be rather nice in low light, early morning and evening conditions. I also like the Zero Lock feature and the low profile turret knobs. Practically their equivalent to the Leupold VX-5HD 3.5-15x44 scope with the Fire Dot reticle, that I have been looking at. Same price too. Not sure if I want to go with that one, the windplex or standard duplex. I have that Savage Model 110 Long Range Hunter that I told you about last summer/early fall and have a 20 MOA Blackhawk Rail on it, but I wouldn't mind moving the solid quality Redfield to another rifle and getting an even better piece since I am trying to set it up for out west hunting (hopefully a Wyoming mule deer and pronghorn combo hunt) this fall. Would I love to afford a high quality piece like this Razor HD LHT or the Leupold VX-5HD 3.5-15x44 in the $1000 range sure, but I am probably going to have to step down to the Viper lineup like HS or HSLR or the VX-3i in 4.5-14x50 or 40 with the Zero Lock and 30 mm tube. Thanks for this really nice thorough overview and mild review since you have only used it on a few hunts out there Brady. Always enjoy learning and sharing about new products to help fellow outdoorsman and woman.

As nice as this is, I’ll probably stick with my Nightforce NX8 2.5-20 for hunting. Used it last October in New Mexico for elk. I was very confident mountain hiking with it knowing it is rock solid and that if I happened to bump it, it would still hold zero. It’s a few oz heavier but built like a tank.

Hey Christopher. Brady is using the kydex cheek piece which is drilled to his rifle. Another great option that's made by Triad Tacticlal, is their Stock Pack. It is super comfortable, and has a zippered side if you wanted to put ammo or anything else in there. It uses velcro spacers underneath to adjust the cheek height. Super simple design! Here's the link: triadtactical.com/triad-stock-pack/ They also have a different version without the zippered pouch: triadtactical.com/triad-stock-pad/ And here are all their designs: triadtactical.com/triad-tactical/all-triad-stock-packs/ On one of the adjustable McMillan stocks... you can use this just as a pad: wiebad.com/mini-stock-pad/ The pad there is designed for certain rifle stocks.

If I remember right, he has a single shot bolt action rifle because he hand loads his ammo to an OAL to get it just off the lands. The OAL, however, is too long so the loaded rounds do not fit in the magazine. This is one of the weaknesses of the 300 win mag and a reason we are getting more modern designed cartridges such as the 300 PRC. Check out some of his previous videos, I think he does a rifle set up.

Hey Glynn. Glad you enjoyed it! Since more and more people are asking, I'd be happy to run through my rifle setup. I've published a few articles over the years on bits and pieces of my setup, but it would make for a great video. @Chris Evans - You have a phenomenal memory! I do run a single shot version on my long range version of my Browning X-Bolt 300 win mag. I handload them to .015 off the lands running 215 Berger Hybrids, which does come out to having a very long OAL. At first, I thought it would bug me only having a single shot, but it has never been an issue and I keep that two round holder on the side of my stock for those "just in case" moments. With practice, I've gotten very fast at loading another round in while on the range. Brady Miller goHUNT Digital Content Manager

If your using the scope for hunting you want a sfp. On a FFP scope it’s damn near impossible to use in low light situations. Scopes take in the most light when you’re on low magnification, and a ffp reticle will too small to see, and if you turn it up the scope won’t take in enough light to see good. It’s a damn mess.

That’s a sweet optic. I’m sure they don’t care what I think, but I think a much more interesting magnification range would have been 3.5-18; it’s still low enough on the bottom to be useful, but 18x is quite a bit more useful for target shooting, particularly at 100yds where if the glass is good enough you can see the holes in the paper, but 15x is pretty tough.

KISS - This is one of Vortex's GREAT long-range hunting scopes. FFP is great for match shooters who are compeating in broad daylight and shooting at sationary white spray-painted steel gongs. For seeing game in low light, and at closer ranges (inside 200Y) using the lower power - FFP is worthless. Second Focal Plane SFP is much more practical. The SFP light weight LHT 42mm with the HSR-5i reticle is just about PERFECT. The simple red dot in the center does'nt kill your night vision by lighting up an entire Christmas Tree reticle - If, you would be using it as a true DMR. Home Run Vortex !!! It would be nice if they made a 2-10 version for the rest of the hunting community that are competant to shoot out to 300 Y.

I have the VX6HD 4-24x52 also. I really love it. However, I have all ready had to send it back once for a black speck on the interior of the glass. Now i have to send it back because the elevation turret lines up in the middle of the hash mark at about 6 or 7 moa so i can't tell whether I'm dialing to 7 or 7 1/4 moa. It's still functional but for the money i paid for it it shouldn't do that. Also the illuminated reticle is not daylight bright on mine. Leupold will cover it under their warranty but I have to pay for shipping to their facility and insurance. Just my experience. Also, and Brady may be able to clarify, but I think Vortex moved the production of their razors to China. Some or most of the components may still be made in Japan. I'm not sure.

It sounds like a good light weight option. He makes it sound like it has some revolutionary features but there is absolutely nothing on this optic that is really new or game changing. If a scope in that price range with an elevation turret doesn't have a zero stop it's archaic in this day and age. 5x zoom ratio... please. Gone are the days of your dad's 3-9 power scopes. 5x is the minum if you are going to be dialing and shooting at extended ranges. It sound like a good light weight scope, but there are a lot of really good optics in that price range with more features. Honestly, it sounds over priced to me.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment! We live in a great age where we have lots of available options for all of us to use when it comes to optics and scopes. I'm hoping to continue to get some field time behind this scope, but so far, I do enjoy what this scope has. Along with that, I do enjoy that it doesn't have a bunch of extras that don't have a benefit for what I'd use this scope for. It’s competitors are what? The vx5hd and maybe the Zeiss v4? It’s lighter than the v4. It’s priced exactly where the market has similar scopes, and I like the locking turret, I have spun my Zeiss v4. I’m not excited about this move to super massive erectors like 6x+ you end up compromising in other areas and have awful tunneling, super dark on full power, and terrible parallax issues. None of which have any business on a hunting optic. I agree its not revolutionary, but it is a good offering IMO and I look forward to putting mine through some torture.

@@str3tchr leupold, tract, maven, burris, sig sauer, Swarovski, zeiss, bushnell, nikon, nightforce, meopta, trijicon, Steiner, GPO, Athlon, etc. Etc. They all make scopes in that price range that are solid options. They all have different features and most are heavier, but not necessarily by much. Like I said, this seems like a really solid lightweight option. But given vortex history of poor quality control, moving production of their Razor products to China (what I've read from multiple sources but don't take it as gospel), and my personal history with vortex, I would hesitate to pay the $$ for this optic they are asking. Just my opinion though and I really hope they prove me wrong and it turns out to be a great value. I just feel there are much better options, even if you have to sacrifice a few ounces. Let me know how yours does. I would love to hear or see more reviews on this. I do disagree with you on the 6x variable power options. At that price range they are well made and the issues you describe are minimal. And in my opinion they have plenty of business on a hunting optic.

I agree with JMCmath. They arent offering anything new but they are doing it right. I'd rather have a scope that is built with the best materials and tolerances then a scope for the same price with more bells and whistles. The reason it is sitting so high is I took off an older scope and just put this on quick since I had a hunt coming up in a few days. I had a bigger Vortex PST Gen 1 on there before I put this scope on. This gun also needs the cheek riser because I have a 20 MOA pic rail and the standard stock doesn't have much rise to it. I think Vortex has missed the boat, not going FFP on the is model such a shame. I will stick with my viper hs-lr for now ...

I'd agree. I own a SFP Vortex in a 2.5-10X range and I'm perfectly fine with it. Once you start getting above 10X I'd want a FFP scope.

Ffp isn't my first choice in a hunting scope... At low power the reticle becomes so small it is all but useless. Sure it has some advantages, but for hunting, not that important to me. Seems like sfp Scopes are lighter too.

Not sure why. On a 15x scope anytime you're using the reticle for holdovers you're likely at full power anyway. Now if it was 25x on the high end....that's another story.

300 win mag for a javelin 🤣🤣
@GOHUNT
@GOHUNT 4 жыл бұрын
Might be overkill, but I'm not the person that wants multiple calibers for different game. All I own are 300 win mags. I love them! They shoot phenomenal, I can get fantastic results hand loading, or in a pinch, factory ammo is readily available if I'm in the middle of nowhere on a hunt and somehow forgot my ammo and need something in a pinch. It's like saying a 500 grain arrow pulling 75 pounds with a 125 grain fixed grain two-blade broadhead is too much for whitetails, but the person also hunts elk. So you just have one setup to do it all. Brady Miller goHUNT Digital Content Manager

Light weight.... this has no features to make it light weight, pretty sure the bolt on Level doesn’t lighten it up... oh and illuminated reticle that makes it illegal to use for hunting in my state...

The level is an add on piece that I put on all my riflescopes, no matter the application. I want to ensure I level out my gun before I take any shot. Also, you can always just not put the battery in the scope. It's like a pickup truck, just because it has a trailer hitch package, doesn't mean I have to pull a trailer around all the time. Probably a bad comparison there, but just because something has a feature, doesn't mean you have to use it. Thanks for checking out the video. Brady Miller goHUNT Digital Content Manager
