Night Vision: It’s a crazy superpower instrumental in the success of our modern warfighters, looks cool in movies, and elevates the night hunting and shooting experience. Mounted to your face or rifle, there’s no question it is insanely awesome. Is it expensive? Yes. Do you want it? Yes. But is it worth it? Vortex Edge® instructor Mike Griffin joins Mark Boardman and Jimmy Hamilton to answer this very question.
As always, we want to hear your feedback! Let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation™ podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

I find that night vision really works depending what you're trying to achieve. If it's divorce, you absolutely need a top dollar gear.

I have been getting by with the lower end just fine, with the IR N/V, no names, and also ATN and AGN thermals, I'm still in the house, but get to go outside to use it also :)

I would say: if youre asking if its worth it, its probably not for you. Its pretty damn exensive, if we just say $3,500 for a monocular thats equivilent to a lot of ammunition for your rifle and pistol. NV is basically a superpower you can buy, but its certainly priced like a superpower.

@@justice3188 I agree, as long as whoevers getting into it knows how much of a money pit their digging into. If they get a weird feeling in their wallet at the cost of a $3,500 monocular or a $2,000 LAM then they should reconsider what theyre jumping into.

Issue with thermal is its blind to some barriers. You can't see through glass so if someone's hiding in a car or house you'd never see them from the outside.

I have a couple pulsar thermals. They are amazing. You can not hide from thermal, you have to physical hide behind something. There is no lag and there is always a difference in temperature between objects. In my house which is obviously climate controled I can see the studs in my walls due to the difference in temp of the studs transferring to the sheetrock. The sensitivity of these thermals are so sensitive I can see corn in a deer feeder and propane in a tank.

I recently got into NODs, and I went with a decent tube (high FoM Photonis ECHO white phos (because I can't legitimately get L3 or Elbitz up here) in a Tanto housing, and full out Cadex mount (think "Made in Canada" Wilcox but better). Somthing good that I can learn to use NV with that I'm not fighting MY EQUIPMENT to use.

Newer High FOM Photonis Echo tubes are alot better than you think. Theyre downplayed for reasons I really dont understand because theyre not "gen 3" or called "Poortonis" when my photons tube costed me more than my L3 Omni 8 tube which super exceeds min DoD specs. Here's the differences I noticed between my Photonis Tube and my L3 tube. Right away, it's gain and low light. Yes, the Gen 3 does "better". Both will struggle Indoors with little to no ambient light and both will need IR. Since I have a contract tube, and the specs sit close to min (although MOST specs on mine exceed it by alot, specially the SNR), Gen 3 devices can have alot more HALO in them. Every single light source has a ball of light around it and its kinda bother some with aiming with IR lasers. I see my laser dot, then a halo ring of light around it. It doesnt bother me too much, but I notice it. Photonis has MUCH faster auto gating and I dont really hear it auto gate, where as I do with my L3 tube. Kinda annoying, but not a big deal. I noticed with a thin filmed and even worse with filmless tubes, in Gen 3 (All photonis tubes are filmless - people dont know that. Read their white paper on that) If you stare at a light source too long, it kinda ghosts into your tube and you see these squiggles all around your tube. Kinda like burn lines - but they go away after about 3-5 mins. I never noticed that with my Photonis tube. Here's how I break down "Photonis" over a Gen 3 tube like "Elbit" or "L3" - if you live in a very urban area? Photonis will do you SOO well. You dont have to worry about that lower photocathode sensitivity and gain and youll see in the dark just as well as someone with Gen 3. Your Halo will be alot better than some Gen 3s out there - if that matters to you or not. Ive learned to let it go so it doesnt matter to me unless its REALLY bad and ive seen tubes where its kinda bad. If you live in more rural areas or even an urban area surrounded by alot of rural areas, gen 3 will be better for you. But are you missing out on Gen 3 at this point in time with what Photonis is putting out to market? Not alot really. The biggest one really is just photocathode sensetivity and gain. Gen 3 is just so much bright and alot more sensitive but if I lowered the gain on my tube just little bit and said "tell me which one is the L3 tube", you wouldnt know. Only when I max out my gain, youll know

Do you need it? Well thats always a per situation answer, however how many people do you know that have 2,3,4 of the same or nearly the same rifle set-ups instead of one solid rifle and NVG's. I bet those guys with multiple rifles are the ones saying they cant afford NVG's. I say that to say, 'to each their own'. Train with what you've got.

I kinda love regulation 18:06 "because there will soon be a work around to deal with them!" Every time they come up with something like radar., soon there will be a radar detector. The price goes down for all players in thier cat, and mouse games. All their regulations just makes us more advanced for cheaper. So please keep making up Unconstitutional laws. You are only making us all more efficient and effective for less!

Probably not worth it at this time. I just saw some VERY recent digital night vision sensor data demonstrating a CMOS chip as good as, or even better (because in full color) than level 3 analog. Now I expect the first versions of this chip in a monocular or binocular will be pricey but it's a chip so cost, and price, will plunge quickly.

Adding a capability to your kit does not make you capable. NVDs definitely are a valuable tool but, just like any other tool, they require training. The first time I tried walking with NVDs I looked like a new born fawn. Granted this was with late 90s versions of PVS-7Bs but, regardless, night vision has a definite learning curve. One drawback of NVDs is it wrecks your natural night vision. It’s been nearly a decade since I used NVDs extensively but there used to be a recommended limit to how long you use them. That’s why I prefer the monocular style PVS-14.
