Make a simple pair of turn shoes on a limited budget! I guess I didn't mention it, but I think I spent less than $25 for all the stuff I need for these shoes; this included my share of a $40 piece of leather, a couple of tools, and some thread.
From making the pattern, sewing, and dyeing the leather, I walk you through my process of making my first pair of medieval shoes, dating from the 10th century, York, England. It was found in the Coppergate excavation. Many thanks to my shoe instructor, HL Athelyna of Oldenfeld, and my foot supermodel, HL Aenor de Pessac.
I didn't do a blog post on this since just about everything is here in the video, but here are a few links to fun stuff that I mention in the video:

Tablet Weaving Pattern Generator (TDD):

NEW How to use TDD: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmPy6...
Yarns:
* Maysville Carpet Warp, which can be found at several different weaving supply places (I often use WEBS at www.yarn.com). It comes in more than 70 colors on an 800 yard spool for about $9, so it can be used in a number of projects and the price is very reasonable.
* 20/2 or 60/2 silk from Eowyn de Weaver on Etsy. Each cone is $30 and comes in 18 different colors. There are also small 100 yard spools that run $5 each and comes in more than 2 dozen colors.
* Pearl cotton, size 8, which can be found is most craft stores in a bunch of colors.
Sewing:
* I use 100% linen from Linen-Store.com in the IL019 weight for my tunics. The quality of their linen is very good, their prices are very reasonable and shipping is fast! Use "ILOVELINEN" in the discount code for an additional 7% off!
Cards:
* 2 1/2" wide (63 mm) made on a 3D printer, a pattern designed by my husband. Free downloadable patterns of other tablets are available on Thingiverse (this one is not my pattern--we are still working the kinks out of the design but these cards are Oseberg reproductions: www.thingiverse.com/thing:180...)
* 3 1/4" cards from Schacht Spindle Company, which run $8 for 25 cards. I love these because they are colored on the edges and they are thin but very durable. Similar cards are made by Lacis but without the colored edges.

Sympathies on the loss of a friend and very talented crafter. 🙏🥺 Wow! Something new to try. I’ve made slippers from fabric but never worked leather. My father was the first in many generations of his family NOT to become a boot/shoe maker. Hope it’s in the genes 😉 Starting with making a thimble is a great idea. Keep the algorithm happy-more than 3 words in a comment people!!

Just found you, and I LOVE your understated sense of humor Elewys! Your soft voice, great story telling skills, and natural sense of humor are a welcome respite from the loud, fast talking, overhyping content creators who act like they have just had 5 espressos. I have a pair of boots very similar to these that I got off Etsy for a reasonable price which are made from sheep's fleece. They are the most comfortable shoes ever. They are more like slippers. So I have wanted to make a similar pair from leather scraps I have that I can wear around extensively outside. So I"m going to be following along with this video - hopefully I have sufficient large scraps to do it. Otherwise I'll buy more.

I attended the BATA Shoe Museum in Toronto around a decade ago - they had a copy of the oldest shoe there. Didn't look comfy, but then, I would imagine saving ones feet from freezing was the initial idea. Pretty nifty place. I imagine it's still up-and-(a-hem...)'running' these days.

I have enjoyed watching the process of making this shoe. I have made a dress-form for a friend using a t-shirt and duct tape then carefully cut along the side and one shoulder. Once the dress-form was retaped along the shoulder and side it was filled with expanding foam so it could be pinned into. I hadn’t thought of modelling my feet. If you need to make more shoes or maybe even a boot, I might suggest extending the taping up your shin/calve region and instead of cutting it for a pattern, cut down the back, removing it from your leg/foot and retaping the cut line and fill with whatever you want to make a foot form. This way you can make all manner of footwear. Just an idea.

"just to make it look more period" is close enough for my fighting group, I'm petite and a bit delicate and I do armoured fighting with steel swords against several guys twice my mass so I wear steel toed boots. They're at least cowboy boot style rather than laced, and dyed purple to match my intentionally oxidized armour. And we don't mention that I've got a pair of lacrosse gloves on underneath my steel half-gauntlets with leather lames... safety before authenticity. We also put perforated steel over any holes in helms big enough to get a sword through. I generally run around in my knockoff crocs after the fighting though, because I have found nothing better for sore feets on hard ground than ugly foam clogs. I have made a pair of fabric shoes though, and they turned out really well, although unless I got some extra cushy insoles in them, I can't wear them all that long because I've got tender tootsies.... but I'm already breaking the suspension of disbelief with eyeglasses, so... pick your battles, folks. I use upholstry fabric for fake period footwear either for mockups to fine tune my pattern or when I can't aford leather. Also, sorry for your loss. The good ones are always taken too soon.

As a custom shoemaker, the hardest part of making medieval shoes for me is the lack of information about lasts. I know lasts changed over time, but I don't have sound, reliable information about exactly how they were different. I really like incorporating older styles in a modern shoe, but that's much easier to execute than scratch building medieval lasts. Thank you so much for your information.

I don't know how they were made in medieval times but making a casting of your feet using silicone caulk and casting in two part resin is a good way to make custom lasts.

Thank you for a great tutorial. Adding the insole is brilliant! A few questions, if you don't mind: 1) Is the awl a round or chisel tip? I've seen both and wonder if one would be easier to use than the other. 2) What size needle are you using? Is it thinner than a normal blunt leather-working needle usually sold in craft stores? 3) Do you know what 3mm translates to for leather ounces? Was that 5-6oz, 6-7oz, 7-8oz or higher? And finally, I would like to offer a few leather working tips: First, add wax to your awl to make it glide through the leather easier (wax is amazing for everything leather) Second, I've done the tape pattern technique before and have found it's easier to create the sole piece first by taping several long strips into a rectangle, then step onto it from toe-to-heel. Clip the sides up to the foot outline into 1" strips (kind of like a starburst pattern) and gently rub those up onto the foot to create the initial wrap, then add tape from there to complete the wrap. This will give you a crisper sole outline and has the benefit of keeping the foot planted and weight bearing, making the pattern less likely to deform - which sometimes happens when the foot is lifted to reach the sole. and Third, if this is vegetable tanned leather, get your shoes wet and wear them until they dry. They will conform to your foot for a super comfortable fit.

Those look so soft and comfy. I have some beaver pelts, so think I will make some with the pelt for the inner lining. I have always had issues with that eco dye. I found the Fiebing's and Angelus dyes work better for me, didn't have to do so many coats. I used Saphir Renovateur Shoe Polish to seal it(This stuff is very good, especially for softer leathers.) Thanks for sharing, you inspired me to start learning to card weave.

I've seen other shoemakers make marks for the holes 1st all around the edges, then stitch - less picking up and putting down overall, more efficient, less tiresome, and stitch spacing more accurate. Depends how many of these things you make, I say, just having made a large number of costume items including shoes. Thanks as always, Elewys! Always good to see how "ordinary" people can make useful stuff.

You can also use a box cutter on a cutting mat to cut leather. I've done it that way for years and get much better cuts than I ever have with leather shears. Shears deform the leather as you cut it and can cause the shapes to mutate. I like to strop the blade on a bit of leather with jeweler's rouge rubbed in just to make it that much more sharp.

11:14 leather workers use a blade similar to an exacto blade on a swivel to cut out their pieced. If you don't want/ can't use your scissors, try a craft knife or even a box cutter. Just be very careful. If it cuts leather, it will cut your hand just as easily. 💖🌞🌵😷

Ah ha! I don't know how long they'll last, but I would assume a few seasons, at least. You don't want to stitch too close together or you risk causing it to perforate like notebook paper, nor too far apart. But there are many people who have made similar shoes and they last quite a long time.

Thank you! There were so many things that Athelyna was asking me to make improvements or things to add or change and I kept saying, "First pair. Let me just make all the mistakes!" I think I like the idea of adding a thicker sole to it, which I can definitely do later or on the next pair. Not only will that make them last longer but also make them more appropriate for wearing them outdoors. These are intended for indoor wear (at least for now).

I walked around outside on dirt, grass and a little bit of pavement and while they scuffed a little, they are not shredded or damaged. You can, as they start to show wear on the bottom of the shoe, sew an additional or new sole on them to extend the life of the shoe or to add a bit more rigidity to the bottom as well as to protect against painful pebbles! I put my insoles in them but did not glue them--they stay put perfectly well.

It might depend on how serious you want to get into your persona. For the most part, there's no stigma of having tattoos--we are all modern people with modern tastes, and many MANY people have tattoos. Some people prefer to cover them to appear more authentic for their historic character, but not always.
