Fire Photographer was first to arrive at this working house fire. At 1838 hours, Coplay 5 and Whitehall engines 3 & 13 take-in a box for a house fire at 24 Saylor Drive in Coplay. Initial dispatch reports the fire to be "working". With that report, command struck a second alarm immediately.
Newsworking photographer arrives minutes later to find heavy fire conditions in the rear of a 1-story S/F/D. Whitehall's Squrt 3 arrives as first-due engine and stretches two lines - one to the front door and one to the rear using side B. The initial line to the front door was delayed in being charged because of pump problems.
Coplay Engine 5 arrives and stretches two lines to the rear. Another large handline was stretched off of Squrt 3 to the rear using the D side of the home.
Initial engine crews made a good attack through the front door after getting the line wet. However, with the delay in calling 911 (as the homeowner tried to battle the blaze) and with heavy fire conditions met on arrival, the attack was a little to late to save the house, as it was totally gutted.
Companies working the two alarm blaze: Coplay engines 511 and 512, Whitehall Engines 3, 13, 4, rescue 5, Cascade unit 3292 (Woodlawn) EMS 6291 (Cetronia) and Macungie Recon 6651.
The homeowner sustained burns to his feet and was transported to a local hospital. Red Cross was on scene assisting the family.

Well, when you open the door and sit there waiting for the engineer to charge the line, the fire is going to flow right at you. You shouldve shut the door while waiting for the line to get charged. Control your doors. Dont break out the windows until the line is charged. That is called coordinated fire attack. Stay safe

I’m curious what their monthly and yearly training is in this department. A lot of videos for this department have similar results. Take these videos as motivation to improve and train. Using the excuse their volunteers doesn’t fly with me. You either are firefighter or your not. If your a volunteer than you have to accept that your community expects the best from you when your department is called to serve the community

(1) Physically/by hand dragging a water supply line back down the street to the hydrant which the same pumper drove passed on its way to the structure which was on fire, was/is not in any manner an acceptable way to lay a supply line. (2) An Engineer who is incompetent at doing his job which starts with charging the firefighters handline in a reasonable period of time, is unprofessional, dangerous and lacking in mental fitness for the job of being an Engineer (3) Allowing a non-firefighting guy dressed in street clothes to approach the first-in handline as they were entering the doorway for an interior fire attack and then to start shouting orders at the crew is both unprofessional, disruptive and unconscionable. (4) The second apparatus to arrive on the scene failed to immediately lay a second handline to backup the first-in handline, waiting a full 3 minutes before doing so. (5) The ladder/pumper raised the truck's aerial water tower in a reasonable length of time, but the officer in charge failed to order additional ladders to be placed to both the 1st floor and 2nd floor roofs in front and rear. The Engineer should have been demoted for incompetency, there are no second chances to get it right when fellow firefighters have their lives are on the line in a burning building. The street clothed order shouter should also be demoted, for interfering with an officer doing his job. If the order giver was/is a ranked Chief and does not have enough faith in this officers to do what their job calls for them to do without his telling them, then he should demote those officers, not shout orders at them on the fire grounds. The officer on the combo pumper/ladder truck needs additional training in second-in support/backup requirements and proper ladder procedures. Just another armchair firefighter who calls em as he sees em and does not believe in self-congratulatory atta boys when mistakes are made for all to see.

Looks like they guys on the line were ready, the pump operator...not so much. Once the nozzleman realized he had no water, he should have backed out and closed the door. With that door being open and those front windows being unnecessarily taken out, it created a very destructive flow path. Also, it appeared that they were using a fog pattern to attack the fire with, also not a good choice. This is a video that will be very helpful in training firefighters what NOT to do, and how to avoid making these potentially deadly mistakes!

Oh I love watching these just to read the arm chair firefighters. Want to give constructive criticism? Go to your local community college and take fire science, better yet if you're in a area that needs volunteers..go volunteer or he'll go test for a career position. I see some things that definitely could have been done better and I'm sure after the incident report is finished there will be a review. I also see where there was a mechanical issue. ( you can pre check at 0700 at the start of your shift, get a working fire by 0730 , arrive at 0737 and a pump can malfunction. It's a piece of mechanical equipment it may have issue's. Trust me it's not fun nor does it feel good to be standing there helpless. ) I also see a lot done correctly, when there was an issue with the pump they stretched another line. Then made a attack on another side of the fire structure to where the fire wouldn't be " pushed." Another issue I heard was response time. Guess what? Someone has to call 911 and then it gets dispatched and crews respond. There is no such thing as a firefighter knowing there's a emergency by osmosis and there isn't a teleport option for response. Don't play hero and try to extinguish the fire, call 911 and get out. The size of this fire clearly states there was a delay in calling. ( you can actually go online and look at incidents by fd in any city, town, state. You will see call Times, dispatch Times, response and arrival times)

Its amazing how these trucks get put into pump gear every single day at morning checks and on multiple calls a day but somehow when its needed theres a "mechanical issue". The truth is he never put the truck in pump and then a series of mistakes followed. Aside from the operator there was plenty of other fireground mistakes to go around. The fact is wether you signed up as volunteer or career it still doesn't make you a hero or even a " Firefighter" our ranks are filled with half assed people and those who cant get the basics right. There is zero excuse why if you take a fire from one town and drop it into another you get a drastically different performance. The Job has to stop rewarding and making excuses for incompetency and hiding behind the guise of heroism and willingness to help.

The importance of controlling the door and NOT taking any windows, until you have water flowing on the fire. Not criticizing by no means, but as soon as the firefighter took the axe to that window, fresh air from outside fed that fire and it vented very swiftly. Looked like a tough situation to roll up to.

Another piece of advise.. 1.. remember 21 decisions have to be made and information known B4 YOU TURN A WHEEL LEAVING THE STATION.. DISPATCH TIME vs leaving.. fire head start.. 2, time of day.. manpower as volleys are concerned. 3 ,, wind, temperature, humidity. 4. Neighborhood type construction 5. Water supply.. how many lengths have to be dropped.. hydrant pressure at that time of day and night you can expect 6. What units are also responding I can go on and on.. so like I stated b4.. make no comments UNTIL ALL INFORMATION IS FORMULATED ALL FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDING NEED TO BE DOING SIZE UP.. not just officers.. From time putting your gear on at the station, up to 1st orders are given on scene

The general public that knows nothing about fire fighting. would make Better fire fighters because they would have to rely on Common Sense and Logic. Find what's burning and put water on it. The fire (Visible Burning Material) was in the back and was threatening the interior. They opened the front door to fight the fire from the inside out, which is stupid when it's burning on the outside, and introduced a ton of fresh air inside that ignited the hot gases. If every burning property belonged to a fire fighter, they would do things a lot different. 95% of fire fighters couldn't care less about your property otherwise they would not LET it burn,.

Dave No they didn't do it right. It's clear you don't Think about what actually happens when a structure burns and water is Correc6tly applied to it.. Water from a nozzle it not a Fan! It is wet and when it hits burning material it immediately eliminates the flames and soaks the material. Hose water can't push fire into the building! Material inside has to reach it's flash point and it can't do that if the air is being cooled by 70 degree water. From inside they can only see 20% of the burning material as long as the thick black smoke eliminates their vision completely. From outside they can see 70% with No visual obstructions. 5:13 When they opened the door on the Non Burning side, the pressure from inside was released toward the door and the front room ignited with the clean air coming in at the floor level. in this view, how much BM do they see from inside? Radiant heat is what will ignite material. By Letting the exterior fire burn, that radiant heat threatened the inside while they were blindly trying to find the BM. You stop all Visible Burning Material BEFORE going inside. Common sense and logic dictate that!

You are above that. The fact is, as I have posted numerous times as well as others, we were not there. We do not belong to their department. We sure as heck don't know what malfunctions occurred, and we can't blindly from our computer desk call bull shit when malfunctions are claimed. Do you know for a fact the hydrant was ok? Do you know for a fact the pump wasn't working? No you don't, and neither do I or anyone else who was not on scene. Also, they are

Anybody can stand at the road and run their mouth but until you have been thru all the training and have fought fire all times of the day and night and last but not least left your family in the middle of the night to go help a strangers family out . I would like to say to all the big mouths out there that want to criticize and talk trash about a dept do all of us firefighters a favor either grow some balls and become a firefighter or keep your hole under your nose shut

The more I watch these videos of volunteer companies the more I think instead of spending all their money on fancy equipment they should spend it on training, more training, more training and how to work together as a team. That is a loss that should have never been. I might be wrong, but before the first truck pulled up, I'm pretty sure I heard someone say this fire department sucks and another reply they do suck....

Open the front door at 1:45 fed a load of fresh oxygen at the base of the fire. Ought have kept the door closed until water was confirmed. And not break windows unless totally needed (and not below the fire). I also didn't see any vertical ventilation. Guys on the roof with a saw could have let out a lot of heat. I agree the fire had a head start, but the FD tactics left some to be desired. Yes, I'm a former vol FF.

7 minutes into the fire and there are low air bells going off...smh. Stop yard breathing and fight fire. 4 guys stacked up at the door with a pile of tangled hose behind them. WHY? WHY WHY WHY... Combat ready. Crew looked like they have never seen fire before. Or maybe they are just a slow company. Dont know. But it looked like pure confusion at the front door. Also why break the windows and open the front door with a uncharged hoseline in your hands? Next time use the front door and windows to your advantage. Dont commit into the dwelling until you and your backup man are ready. I come from a very busy company and we continuously train on the basics, hose line deployment, ladder placement and so on. Also Im really liking the no hood... good job. Also looks like a fire line officer too. Set good examples and the right things will fall into place. There are so many things wrong with this dwelling fire I could go on for days.

Those who say firefighters suck and those who criticize are just plane mean. First off to the ones who said the fire department sucks if this is not a place where they have paid Firefighters who live at the station you have to give them time to get from home to the station then get into their gear and get the engines started and wait for other fire fighters to arrive. Second unless the station is right around the corner from your place you just expect that as soon as you call it in the POOF here they are and third if you think you can do better then go grab a garden hose or two and start working on the fire instead of standing around complaining. Next is those who talk about the way the fire fighter does his/her job. Many times a firefighter does not think about him/herself when when fighting the devil all they think about saving lives and property so if they ever come to your house for a fire are you gonna criticize them because a coats not done up or one is not wearing a flash hood? No of course not cause they are fighting your battle with the Devil. It is so easy to Criticize firefighters when ya sit in front of your computer watching a video like this or you stand there watching something burn because it's not your place that is on fire. Grow up and show some respect for those brave men and women who get called out from there homes in all types of weather at all hours of the day and night to save the lives and property of people like you who do nothing but complain and criticize about the speed with which a department gets to a fire or for how they deal with the fire.

Taking 4 minutes to put water on the fire is totally bad, a lot of the crew didn't seem to know what they were doing, it took to long to begin the initial attack and even longer to get a second and third line working, this crew need more training to get them up to standard the engineer to need to get better training

I know I am not there looking at everything and can't see the whole picture, but my perception is the following: The Engineer should be able to hand jack his own supply line. The firefighter should be able to pull his own pre-connect and get it flaked out. The firefighter should at least be flowing tank water and taking the heat out. This was way too slow. There are in the picture four guys on scene that takes care of RIC. WHAT IS GOING ON?

You take this video on training night, show it, over and over.. DEBRIEF THE TROOPS... have troops interact durning training feed backs... officers listen to troops... After the DEBRIEF, officers gather , set training schedule to reduce any defecenies for next alarm.. you have a 500 gallon tank.. anyone aware of faulty hydrant supply???? Ppl are critical BUT THE ENTIRE INCIDENT WAS NOT ON TAPE... 500 gallons last you 3 to minutes until rank is dry.. with that heavy fire,, need proven water supply to protect your troops.. By the way.. with variable gpm of a task force tip and pattern set.. fire load blacken down fast.. great job.. as what was taped B4 anyone really badmouth,. Get ALL THE FACTS.. only way to do that is a training debriefing meeting

Everyone is a fire fighter I see. Their safety comes first here. The fire is already in the attic of the house. How did the fire start in the first place? Bbqing to close to the house perhaps. If you think your better than these professionals then suit up or shut up.

trained and practiced that way. Many departments have the first engine go into attack mode upon arrival, and the second engine or first truck lays in. Making comments makes you appear to lower yourself to the level of the yahoo who was screaming the fire dept sucked because they were there the second flames were showing. I know you are way better than that. The fact your are a paramedic tells me you have lots of brain power and smarts. Don't get caught up in the "you tube expert" mode.
