In this video I go over how to use your 9.2 channel audio video receiver as an 11.2 channel processor using a secondary receiver as an external amplifier. No need to go buy a separate external amplifier when you probably have another AVR already. This is one way you can save money by sticking with one of the lower cost 9 channel receivers and simply adding a method to externally amplify the last 2 channels. Many of the available 9.2 channel receivers are capable of processing the full 11.2 channels needed for the desirable 7.2.4 Atmos setup. See the list below for the 9 channel AVRs that I am aware of that are capable of this. I am sure there are others but this is a start for those searching for one or figuring out if the one they have is capable.
Audio Video Receivers Capable of Processing 11 channels
- Marantz 9 channel AVR's from sr6011 - sr6015
- Denon x4300-x4500, x3600 and x3700, x4700
- Yamaha RX-A3060 - RX-A3080
- Onkyo RZ830, RZ840, RZ50
- Pioneer LX-504 and LX-505

Good solution. In my case I have an older analog AV receiver (vintage late 80s composite) that I plan to use as a 2-channel amp. Should work perfectly to bump my Onkyo TX-RZ50 to support 7.2.4 without the need to spend $ on a dedicated new amp.

I probably did this much more expensively, but still only have a 7.2.2 because of room configuration (no rear heights....yet). A couple weeks ago, I added an 11-channel amp (Tonewinner AD-8300PA) and put my X4700 in full pre-out mode, using the AVR essentially as a pre-pro. I get better sound out of the LCR because of higher power and, unless it's my imagination, get a better soundstage, as far as channel separation.

I love my older paradigm speakers so I never have a problem recommending them but outside of that I have less experience. I feel like the sound of speakers is more of a taste thing and some will like some while some will not. I personally don’t like the sound of Klipsch while others say they are fantastic. So my best recommendation is to go to a location you can demo a bunch of different brands and see what your ears like the best. Best Buy magnolia centers or audio advice type places have demo rooms with tons of options. Then stick with your budget and choose based on those things. Stay away from budget speaker packages I would say unless you have to. They are typically the bottom end and are not usually rated to handle much power. I have not listened to Elac speakers yet but want to and have seen some good reports but again I think personal preference. Good luck with your setup and have fun upgrading, it’s some of the best times in the hobby! Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks for watching!

That is only a 7.2 ch processing receiver which means you are limited to only 7.2 channels. It does have atmos capabilities so you could run 5.2.2 which is two atmos height channels and 5 in plane channels and 2 subs. The receivers we are using are capable of 11.2 channel processing so you are able to run full 11 channels with the addition of a 2 ch amp. This is only bc the receivers we are using only amplify 9 channels so in order to get the last two you have to have an external amp or receiver.

So I've watched the video a few times trying to see if this would work in my situation. I have an Onkyo RZ50 and trying to add 2 additional atmos speakers using a powered amp. I'd like to run the 3 channel amp to the front soundstage and use the AVR to power the remaining 8 speakers. The AVR only has 6 remaining speaker terminals not counting Zone 2. Am I able to use Zone 2 for the 2 front atmos speakers I'm adding? I'd appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks
@thepefflyranch
@thepefflyranch Жыл бұрын
So I looked up the RZ50 again and it does have the 11.2 ch pre-outs so you should be able to use the front L and R and center with the Pre-outs going into your external 3 channel amplifier. You would then hook the remaining speakers up to their corresponding locations. L and R surrounds hooked to L and R surround speaker terminals, atmos height 1 to atmos height 1, etc, etc. so you would end up with only the front LR and center unused for speaker terminals. Looking more closely at the back of your receiver I see that there is only a height 1 and not a height 2 but it has the zone 2…. My guess is that it could possibly use the zone 2 as height 2?? Would need to research that more in the manual on the possible ways to run 11.2 with this receiver. If the zone 2 terminals are reserved for only zone 2 then you will be stuck with running the preouts for height 2 (zone 3) channels. So maybe you could run the height 2 channels with the external amp? I know a bunch of people feel the need to lighten the load on their receivers but I have never run into an issue running my front sound stage and everything else on it, and you can crank it up till it hurts lol. Let me know if you have any more questions and I’ll comment back if I learn any more in the zone 2 options. Thanks for watching!

See image from page 58 of your manual on how they recommend hooking up 7.1.4 setup. It shows that you would need to use the preouts for height 2 and zone 2 reserved for zone 2 option. www.manua.ls/onkyo/tx-rz50/manual?p=58

If it does not have a setup mode that includes the extra wide set then you won’t be able to have it that way. The traditional atmos setup would include only two fronts. I don’t think I have seen any that include both L and R set and LR wide set for 4 front speakers. I may be wrong tho. I personally don’t think they would be necessary if you have th rest of the channels in use as the atmos processing, when setup and calibrated correctly will provide almost seamless transitions of sounds between speakers that surround you. The front LR blend well with the LR sides so I don’t think there is a need for wides in between them. Hopefully this makes sense. Is it because you have permanent placed speakers and you don’t want to change that? What is the current layout? Happy to help walk you through a next best setup from what you have. Thanks for watching!

@thepefflyranch hi Thank you for taking the time to respond. My onkyo tx-nr838 I think is there first gen dolby atmos avr. It has front wide and height channels. But no rear upper atmos setup. I ment to say in the other message I don't think I have seen any other wide side channel on any other avr. I guess it was something onkyo tried with the tx-nr838 model. Also I'm sure I don't have my atmos setup correctly. I've just started viewing lots of KZfaq content and have found the atmos sound test videos. And nothing is sounding like it should. I hope when I get the tx-rz50 I can truly get everything setup properly. Hopefully I can ask you some more questions when I get it or have problems. Thank darrell

Hi darrell again I think I'm going to get a denon avr-x6700h. My question is when I connect my older onkyo to it I'm confused on the volume control it setting the second avr to a set volume how does that work with having a set volume when a scene mite have a lower volume. I'm sorry I'm trying to understand all of this. Thanks darrell

@@hemieed1 just set it to something like -20dB and run audyssey cal and see if it over compensates with the levels when you do it. If so then come up some more in volume and rerun. When it is close to 0 on the levels compensation your good.

Me again I completely forgot to ask. avr-x6700h has 2 trigger out. And my onkyo allso has trigger out? I don't see a trigger in were do I plug it in so the denon turns it on at power up? Thanks a bunch for responding have a good evening. Darrell

Hey thanks for the great video. I've been playing around with almost the same set up for a month or so. I have a X3700H and a S910W. One comment and one question. First make sure to set the second AVR, S910W in my case, on direct or pure direct to remove any processing delay. It took me a week to figure that out and get rid of the weird echo affect i was getting. Now the real question. LOL before I decided to go down this rabbit hole of 5.1 to 11.1 I had my main left and right biamped. I love it. I don't care what anyone says, it sounded better. So... is there anyway to run 4 speakers,like all 4 heights or whatever, off of the S910W so I can go back to biamping my mains? The S910W doesn't support biamp or I'd just run the mains off of it. I'm stumped on this one. Thanks in advance.

Oh yes for sure you want to be in pure or direct listening mode with no additional processing or delays, good call! For the question, I don’t think it’s possible based on the available selections in the audio setup menu. Would love to know if you ever figure out how to though! I think to do that you would need to step up to a 11+ch AVR. Thanks for watching!

Nice video! I have the Denon 3700x as well. I upgraded from my Yamaha RX-V685 because the LG TV I bought didn't play nice with it. Not knowing then what I do now I bought the 3700 thinking I could simply add 4 ceiling speakers and just plug in my 7.1 speakers I had already. Then plug in 4 ceiling speakers. Well, I'm really glad I didn't sell the older Yamaha now! The only thing I would ask is: Would I be better off just powering the front 2 channels with the v685 as an external amp and powering the four ceiling speakers with the 3700x or would it be best to set mine up like u did using external amp to power my height channels?

@@peleger1 good question, I like to run mine like I do keeping most of the heavy lifting with my nicer receiver. It is more than capable and I haven’t noticed any issues. Your lesser receiver is most likely a different class amp and worse distortion etc. so probably better to keep the majority of the sound on the best amp and leave the light work to the old receiver and let it do 2 atmos channels. I think some people might disagree and could say that you want to lighten the load on the main receiver but I tend to think it’s not necessary. Hope you get it all working good and enjoy it! Thanks for the comment and for watching!

@@peleger1 yes it is possible, and quite simple. Use as many channels as you like, route the pre-outs to the 7.1 direct input.

Update: I'm still playing around with speaker placement and such. And keep in mind that the S910W is rated at 125 watts and the X3700H is rated at 105 watts (each with 2 channels driven). I just changed my two mains to the S910W and Holy Cow! I would have never dreamed it would make this much of a difference. Especially when playing stereo music, IT IS DRAMATICALLY different. Neither receiver ever sounded this good with multiple speakers hooked up, even in stereo mode. I've read a lot of speculation about power output when driving 7 or 9 speakers but have never found any hard facts. Well now I believe some things about just how much it reduces power output.

Turn up the volume knob of your ext amp to 80 percent & then run audessy or else the sound will be very feeble
@randalchao

Does the ext amp need to be on all the time? Or it can turn on/off automatically when there is preout input?

@@dalbotshira on the back of the 4700 there are 2 preout RCA connections labeled Subwoofer 1 & 2. It is located in the pre out section directly in the center of the back of the receiver. Just plug in your 2nd sub into this and run the audyssey setup and select option with 2 subwoofers. Let me know where your getting stuck if this doesn’t work.

I don't think using rca is good as you won't get hd audio to the speakers.
@thepefflyranch
@thepefflyranch 2 ай бұрын
Your speaker outputs, to include preouts, use an analog signal at this point. This is the final stage which comes after digital encoding or processing is completed. So RCA for preouts is fine and will result in the same signal you get with your speaker wires going to your speakers.
