11 'Grungiest' Bass Intro Riffs

If you don't like your bass riffs dark and dirty, then this is probably not for you. Not so long ago I did a list of ‘punkiest’ bass intros, so now here is a list of 11 ‘grungiest’ bass intros. From Seattle's finest, and other associated acts to the post-grunge bands that followed them. There is obviously a lot more to the bass players of this era than just hammering out riffs in the key of E and D. However, if you’re looking for some grungey inspiration for your bass riffs, hopefully you will find it here.

Yep. I'd never heard "It's Shoved" until this video. And that was immediately what I thought of. I googled it to see if others had noticed the similarities. Buzz from The Melvins has even talked about it.

Glad to see "Slaves & Bulldozers," one of the top 5 Soundgarden tracks for me. Great live tune, reminds me of the slower Stooges songs ("Dirt," etc.)

Im glad that this guy didn't just do bass lines from the big four (Nirvana, AIC, Soundgarden, pearl jam) but on that note I wish he had done Jesus Christ Pose by Soundgarden. Regardless, Great video!

I have a strange thing with playing the bass. I am left handed but play bass right handed however I can't play with a pick only my fingers. If I play with a pick I have to play left handed.

This one is a classic vibe P-bass and I’m happy with it. Depends what style you want to play. Some of songs in this list I thought might have sounded better on a jazz bass like the Nirvana and Soundgarden ones.

I'm using a bass amp sim on GarageBand. I couldn't say exactly what it's meant to be or how you'd get it. Also I'm using a Squier Classic Vibe P-Bass.

So-called grunge bands were stilistically more diverse than the "genre" suggests but their bass tone definitely wasn't.
