Acrylic Pouring Blooms Technique Inspirational Tutorial Video.
paint pouring, the painted dreamer, abstract fluid art, shelee art style, no silicone, fluid acrylics, acrylic pouring techniques, fluid art tutorials, abstract acrylic pouring Art, Pour Painting, fluid painting, house paint art, swipes, blooms
In this video I will be showing you how I mix up the pouring medium using the Valspar Ultra High Gloss & Varathane Triple Thick Combo and then the Valspar Ultra Semgloss & Varathane Triple Thick Combo. I also mix up some paints with one of the PMs to show how well it mixes up. I hope this video is helpful and inspiring for you and you enjoy watching this half as much as I enjoyed creating it! 😊 Thanks so much for watching! ❤️
A lot of what you see being created on my channel when ready will end up in my Etsy store. Some pieces if they translate well to digital will also make it to my RedBubble and Society6 shops so if you see a design you like please check out my links below.👇🏻😊💜
Products Used in This Video:
PM Mix:
Base - Valspar Ultra Semigloss Base C & Valspar Ultra High Gloss Base C: Both Found at Lowe’s
Varnish - Varathane Triple Thick Water Based Polyurethane in Clear Gloss: Found at Home Depot, Menards, Ace Hardware, Meijer, Walmart and Amazon
Both PMs Mixed 3:1 Base/Varnish
Paints Used:
Jo Sonja Black Umber: Found online at Dick Blick or Jerry’s Artarama
Golden Fluid Quinacridone Violet: Found online at Dick Blick or Jerry’s Artarama
This Little Piggy Pigment Comet: Found online at fluid-art.co
PM to Paint measurement (estimate):
1.5oz (45ml) PM to between 1/4 tsp (1.25ml) to a 1/2 tsp (2.5ml) paint to start. If too thin add a little more paint (or even a gel gloss), if too thick add a little more PM to thin more.

NOTE: If you can’t find these brands or are in a different country the components you want are an untinted base house paint (base c or d, base 3 or 4 whichever is lowest, deep base or ultra deep base or neutral base) plus a water based polyurethane gloss varnish to make up your Pouring Medium. If you want to try a more traditional pouring medium base because you can’t get certain components, TOTALLY go for it and give it a try 😃 it’s YOUR Art after all! 💜. Another Note: I have switched from using the Triple Thick Varathane to the Regular Varathane as it was getting too thick for me so this will work well with the Valspar Ultra as well! :D

You ought to check out the paintings and prices, I'm sure you'll be surprised! 🥰 I am just starting out in paint pouring, I have everything I need to do paints. I have 350 videos of all the paintings by many people. Been searching for so many new techniques and Ideas. I would like to thank all the painters out on KZfaqrs. Really you should check it out, the prices!! You're paintings are beautiful... please check them out, like go to the paintings stores on other sites to get some Ideas for pricing. I have a large pool for dogs that folds up, on my kitchen table until my art room is cleaned out. I have a German Shepherd and it's getting a little cramped too. Soon it will be time for me to move into my Woman Cave. 😂🤣😂🤣 Hey if they can have a man cave, we ought to have, a Woman Cave. Well happy painting. Stay safe 🥰🙏🇺🇲

What paint could i use instead of glidden. Because I work at a hardware store and I have access to the Benjamin Moore products so I was trying to save money so so if you could tell me an alternative to the glidden
@ThePaintedDreamer
@ThePaintedDreamer 2 жыл бұрын
@@heatherbrasuell852 I’ve tested and experimented with a lot on this channel but I haven’t tried the Benjamin Moore so I don’t have personal experience with it. Since you have great access to this paint I would (if they come in quarts) buy quarts to make sure you like what it’s doing for you. For your pillow (white base you lay down first) you want a low sheen (satin or eggshell but not flat) white interior wall paint (latex not oil). For your pouring medium base mix the untinted base paint part you want an interior (latex not oil) the highest gloss that line comes in whether it’s semi, gloss or high gloss, and then the lowest base that has the least amount of titanium in it so you can mix it with your colors (like you would with a more traditional pouring medium). I don’t know how Benjamin Moore numbers their cans 1, 2, 3 etc or a, b, c etc or even white/pastel, medium, neutral etc but you want the lowest it comes in so 3 or c or neutral. That untinted paint is paired with a clear gloss water based polyurethane varnish to make up your PM. I’ve used a number of them and some work better than others paired with a base paint. Also if your base paint is on the thicker side use a thinner varnish but if it’s on the thinner side then you can get away with a thicker varnish if you want (I.e, regular vs triple thick). Use what’s available to you and see how it goes and how everything works for you 😊

I've been binging on your videos. Happily expressing how grateful i was to my fiance that you had mentioned a few factors and techniques that i really hadn't come across on other channels. The benefit of you dealing with the same weather helps too. I used to explain over and over what works for me may not for you we have to consider we are crafters from all over asking these questions. We have humidity others have dry heat. Our winter is brutal and still shocks us w a 70°day in December 🤣 The effects weather has on so many arts is nuts. I hoop dance, and have resorted to trying to only buy a certain tubing hula hoop as the other one can become bendy or brittle depending on hot or cold. I like to keep a few hoops on my car so i can flow anywhere.

Adding too much water will start to break down your paint. Some paints can handle more, some can handle less so if you are going to use water use just a little at a time and see what happens. If things get weird, you’ll know why 🤗

When they stop making the Sherwin Williams that I started the Sheri coarse with it has been crazy trying to find the right paint that would work for me. As some will tell you while one thing works for one person it may not work for someone else. So many variables with this process. I have been using this mix now for about 3 weeks and everything is working perfectly. 😍😍😍. I follow you on Instagram and love your work and all the great info you share here at KZfaq!!!💜💜💜💜💜

As a trained chef.... I design production recipes.... I'd use a scale ( you can buy them at target, or online) . 1TBL is roughly 1/2 an oz, and 2 TBL is approximately 1 ounce. So...instead of getting tons of little measuring spoons dirty ( and having to clean them). just place your container on a scale .. and pour your 3 to 1 mediums. After each addition "tare" or zero out the scale, and pour the next ingredient. if you are worried about the mess on the scale..cover it with baking paper, cling film or wax paper. Easy... and it's less messy..less clean up. Just a tip from a different professional that can be easily applied to art recipe too!!!

Thank you for sharing your experiments. I had to drive way far to get the valspar. Now I have had some mixed up for a few weeks and I went to use it and its kind of orange looking. Have you noticed the varthane triple thick discolors over time? The behr infinity minwax didnt turn orange. My most recent batch I used jo Sonja and some clark& Kensington to see if that helps the discoloration since in the can the triple thick looks a little orange. The Clark &Kensington works really well alone and is nice and clear and held shape but dried too fast so I decided to add some of the valspar. So far so good.

You’re welcome! I have noticed that in the can the Varathane Triple Thick does turn darker the longer it is open. I’ve not had it effect any of my pieces though and it still dries amazing. I just finished off an old can of the Varathane and opened a new one and saw the difference. The new can was like an off white and the old can was more of dark cream with a hint of yellow. I do have on my list for my next set of experiments the Clark & Kensington bases so I’m excited to see what works well with them. 😃🤗💜

Hi Jodi, I"m a beginner I enjoy all the detail info you give but my question is can I torch this? I do a lot of Dutch Pours and other paintings but I torch mostly everything. I am afraid of burning the house down. I am referreing to the valspar and varathene. thank you very much Chickie P. S. I live in north florida.
@ThePaintedDreamer
@ThePaintedDreamer 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Frances, I’m so glad they help 🤗 and I’m glad you asked this question. I wouldn’t advise torching if you are using house paint and then the PM with the varnish. House paint scorches real easily and then the PM with the varnish can be flammable as well as toxic when heated so I absolutely don’t recommend. I like to let my paints rest as long as possible before using them and after I’ve painted I’ll lightly blow on my piece to pop any bubbles and any weird ones I’ll poke down with a skewer or toothpick. Hope this helps! 🤗

Hi, I love your work, and have learned a lot from you. Thank you for all your wonderful videos. I have a question about your mix. 1 tried using the regular varathane, and Valspar. It is super thick. If I add more pm, or just the varnish it's the perfect consistency, but completely changes my colors. I have tried this with about 5 different brands of acrylic including ink. Floetrol does the same thing. Could you please tell me what to add to thin it out that won't change my colors?

Hi Shiela, I’m surprised it’s super thick with the regular Varathane (triple thick I can see as I have issues with it myself in winter), is your Valspar untinted base can really thick all by itself? Sometimes that can happen but I haven’t seen one yet myself. You can try changing the ratio up for your base to varnish going 2:1 or even 1:1. I’m honestly not sure why it would be affecting your colors, were they drying okay when it was super thick? Sometimes untinted bases (I’ve tested a few different brands that did this) can mix up a little paler but when dried they dry true to color. Are you using base c for the untinted base paint (I have to ask just in case as it’s happened before also)? There really isn’t anything to add to your PM mixture to make it thinner besides changing the ratio. You could also try mixing a paint up without a ratio’d PM. Maybe try it with a tube and a fluid to see how it works for each and how it keeps your consistency. Add some of the untinted base paint to your container then add your paint and mix it (it will be thicker until you start adding varnish), then add in your varnish slowly to your desired consistency. This method bypasses the need for mixing up a full PM batch and gives you a little more control. Also consider your environment, if it’s cooler it will thicken your paints up, even more so if your mixtures are already mixed up on the thicker side. This is everything I can think of for you to try. Hope it helps and good luck! 💜

Hi Jodie. Thank you so much for your help! I am using the base C. I tried adding more varnish, adding water, using ink, etc. Nothing worked. You were right. It was the weather. As soon as we had a warm day, it mixed up beautifully. Now, to find a fix for my other problems lol. I signed up for the course. Hopefully that will help. I saw that you're taking a break. I hope everything is ok with you. Looking forward to seeing more of your awesome videos. 💜

Hi Josee! 😃👋🏻 You’re so welcome! I think in Canada the label is different it isn’t Valspar Ultra but call Valspar High Gloss Enamel base c. Others in Canada have told me they found it that way. You want a water based varnish I’ve always used a polyurethane type so I don’t know if something else will or won’t work but as long what you have is water based and not oil based I would give it a try and see how it goes 🤗

I have been really needing a good "versatile" PM. I will continue watching - but is this a versatile PM used for a lot of different pours or are you mixing these mostly for a bloom? I know you have to adjust the consistency. Thank you for your teaching

You’re welcome Marla, 🤗 I use this pouring medium for my blooms, my swipes and transfer blooms but it could technically be used for other types of techniques I suppose, it just mixes up a lot thicker but it dries clear like other more traditional PMs letting the colors shine through. If you decide to use it or experiment with it I’d love to hear how it works for you. I think I may put that on my experiment list to try it out with other types of fluid art 💜

Hi Jody. I love watching your videos for a lot of reasons. you’re so generous with your information and creative with your ideas. I’m in Canada so I really appreciate the fact that you are looking out for us here and trying to find a sources for the contents of the recipe. My questions revolve around why we do what we do. I would like to know why were purchasing certain products for certain steps in the technique. I guess I don’t understand their purpose. In the PM. What is your first ingredient the Valspar ultra semi gloss base C? Is that a paint? Why does it have to be mixed with a varnish? Why does any of these recipes from any of the artists need a base house paint to be mixed with a varnish and then that combination mixed with an Acrylic “coloured paint used in the design”? Like why isn’t that coloured acrylic design paint just mixed with Floetrol, Liquitex PM or Gac 800 and then layered on the pillow? I just don’t know why a house paint and varnish are needed to be mixed as a pm for the coloured paint. Maybe if I knew that I could do better a understanding why something isn’t working and fix it or experiment. Why do you have the two Valspar? I know they’re different in thickness. Is that why? And are they paint and colored white? Oh. It can’t be white because you tint it with your colors. Thank you so very much for helping everyone
@ThePaintedDreamer
@ThePaintedDreamer 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sandie 🤗 thank you 🤗 all valid questions. Short answer is it’s how I was taught when I took the online course for this specific technique but as I got to know it and saw how it responded and the fact that it’s thicker than more traditional PMs I liked using it best. Others may use something else, this is what I use. The base pillow is a house paint has more stretch and buoyancy to it than just say mixing acrylic paint and floetrol. You can certainly use it but to me it just doesn’t work as well. For your pouring medium the untinted house paint is self explanatory but the added varnish helps to float your colors on top of your pillow paint instead of it sinking down into it and getting eaten up. You can certainly experiment with omitting it and just using untinted house paint to see what happens. Cell activator well that’s what makes the cells if you want to use something other than silicone then either the Australian floetrol with paint or the US floetrol CA recipe will work. If you want to try silicone with this method by all means, there are probably a number of different ways to go about it but this is what I do. 😊 If you haven’t seen my beginners tutorial on this technique (video 36) maybe give it a watch it helps explain some more what I just said here. Also, I experiment a lot on this channel so you will find different recipes, the point is, they all work so pick one that fits within your budget or try something new and have fun experimenting! Hope this helps! 💜

Everything ends up yellowing over time unfortunately, including resins but here you are using so little and it’s mixed in with your acrylic paints it doesn’t seem to have an adverse affect as you’re not using it as it’s intended purpose as a varnish over your piece but in the actual paint 🤗

I love your videos! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. I have two questions - 1) in what circumstance would you use semi-gloss instead of hi-gloss? 2) Why do you mix your own pouring medium instead of just using Liquitex or something similar? Is there a considerable cost difference? Thanks again for all you do!!
@ThePaintedDreamer
@ThePaintedDreamer 2 жыл бұрын
You’re very welcome Karen and I’m so glad my videos have helped! 🤗. I compared both the hi gloss and the semi gloss because sometimes they may be out of one or the other so really you can use either, they both work well it’s just what may or may not be available to you. With the blooms technique when I took the course it was recommend to use the formula of an untinted base paint & varnish mix for your PM and having used it now for the last couple years I just love the versatility of it. I have used Liquitex and golden PMs in the past for more traditional fluid art like flip cups and even then I modified them with other ingredients as I just found them way too thin on their own. So to answer your question I like to mix my own because I get a more personal mix to what exactly I want my paints to do with the outcome I’m looking for. As far as cost a gallon of golden or Liquitex will run you anywhere from $60-$80/gallon depending on where you get it. Untinted base paint can run from $25-$55 a gallon (depending on the brand) and then adding the varnish in probably another $10-$20 so it’s comparable if you use the more traditional PMs straight from the bottle but if you add to it like I usually then it’s still pricier. It really boils down to personal preference, budget, what technique you are doing and what outcome you want from your pieces. I hope this helps this is totally long winded but I was on a roll haha! 💜💜

I do mostly swipes and manic manipulation and come up with some really cool stuff. But... I found a gold base that is amazing from Valspar and use a high gloss black base from my old carpentry life... but my white irritates me. I can't get the one recipe that I love and can tweak. Any ideas? I also bought several mica pigments because of you and oh my gawd the colors are vibrant and amazing. Thanks again for your art, it's incredible.

I’m still really loving the Valspar/Varathane combo however I’m using the regular Varathane now as opposed to triple thick. As it was getting cooler in my studio it was making my paints thicker so I had to switch. I also use my Dutch boy/jo sonja combo for pigments but that’s just personal preference, you can totally use just the one mix. It took me awhile to figure out what works best for me for the art I want to do and the environment I work in with all the temp changes. Hi Evelyn 🤗 You can use this for pigments sure and I have used it in the past and it works well but it can mix up a little thin especially if you are in a warmer environment. You can switch up your PM ratios to be 2:1 instead or 3:1 and see if that helps or you can disperse your pigment in the varnish first and then just add the untinted base a little at a time mixing as you go until you get the consistency you want. I would not add US floetrol to your pigments as it’ll dull and matte them some. 💜

Quick question for you Jodie - once you mix up your base C + WB varnish, is there a shelf life? Does mixing them in advance and letting them sit (say 3-4 weeks) impact their behavior? Stir or swirl before use, of course, but I'm more curious if they get up to any chemical shenanigans if they're mixed too far in advance. I'm one of those "mix two gallons" types. 😀
@ThePaintedDreamer
@ThePaintedDreamer 2 жыл бұрын
Sure Elizabeth 😊 you can totally mix a batch up and use it as you need it. I only mix up about 16oz at a time and that can last me up to two months with no issues you just may need to stir to reincorporate as if it sits a bit it will separate. As long as it doesn’t look weird or smell weird it should be just fine for at least a month or two. 💜

Are you using the Minwax polycrylic or another Minwax varnish? I like to use GAC 800 to thin down any paints that might need it or another acrylic extender will work too. I don’t like to use water only because adding too much can break up your paints. Also if your pouring medium mixture itself is on the thicker side you can either adjust your ratios a bit adding more varnish or Valspar to make it a bit thinner or use more fluid paints with too will help as tube paints tend to be thicker. I hope this helps! 💜

Alternatively other bases I’ve tried there are the SW HGTV Infinity base c in semi gloss and the SW HGTV Showcase base c in semi gloss. If you can’t find any then you may need to experiment with what is available, you just want the lowest base they have and the highest gloss in that brand whether it’s semi, gloss or high gloss. If you need to experiment I would stick with quarts in case that particular base you aren’t fond. They also even have 2oz samples at the counter sometimes. Also you aren’t limited to the Varathane triple thick for varnish I switched over to the regular Varathane myself as the triple thick was making my paints too thick over the winter so keep that in mind if you are in a cooler environment. Hi Jill! 😃👋🏻 You sure can use the Glidden/One Coat instead. I used to use that PM a lot and it makes stellar cells! Just know the Glidden has a bit more titanium in it so you colors and pigments may be a bit softer. The paints dry beautifully but iridescents and pigments dry a bit more subdued. You rock! Btw, do you address flocculation in any of your videos? If so, please direct me. Struggling.
@ThePaintedDreamer
@ThePaintedDreamer 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Marie! You know I don’t know that I’ve really talked about the why for flocculation in any videos I’ve really only pointed it out if I had any. Usually the causes for it are either a reaction within the paints (color paints, pillow, base etc.) like something isn’t getting along and it’s trial and error that way but also if you don’t have enough paint on your canvas and keep stretching or spinning it, eventually it will be too much and flocculation will occur that way as well. To remedy that is to make sure you have enough paint on and don’t overstretch or spin. That’s sort of a balancing act there but I always tend to add more paint than less paint on all my pieces to combat that but the flip slide of that is then making sure you take enough paint off so you don’t get any cracking while drying 😕 .. I hope this helps! 💜💜

Hi Janet, so this video is a mixing video of one of the pouring mediums I use in the blooms technique. In the videos that preceded this one I was testing out both the Valspar High gloss and the Valspar semigloss with the Varathane triple thick as pouring mediums. This is me now actually mixing up the pouring mediums as I’ll do that for new ones I experiment with on this channel. Towards the end I always mix up a tube paint, a fluid paint and a pigment with the pouring medium mixed earlier in the video to show how the paints mix up with it. That is what you are seeing at the end, me mixing up the paints with the PM. Hope this helps clarify.

@@ThePaintedDreamer Thank you for your quick response. So the valspar high gloss and the valspar semi gloss are house paint? Love all your paintings.. Beautiful..
@ThePaintedDreamer
@ThePaintedDreamer 2 жыл бұрын
@@janetcoleman3366 Sure! Yes, both the Valspar high gloss and semi gloss are house paints but if you look on the can it’s the base c which is the untinted base and will act very similar to a more traditional pouring medium like Liquitex or golden in that it will carry the colors and dry clear. If you get base A it would pretty much be a can of white paint and something you wouldn’t want to use for your pouring medium mix. You want the base that they use to tint very dark or black colors at the store as that will be the clearest and have the least amount of titanium in it (if at all) so it won’t pale or dull your colors. Typically this base is the last in line like base c here or even base d if that brand goes that low. Some paint brands use numbers instead of letters but it would be the same concept. A base 1 would be white while a base 3 would be untinted. Make sense?

You can mix the US floetrol with Amsterdam paint at a higher ratio 9 or 10:1 floetrol:paint or there’s another recipe with other ingredients including the Minwax prestain conditioner …

The Artist's loft were just beautiful but very thin and the CA sinked fast. Is mica powder the same as pigments?
@ThePaintedDreamer

Basically, pigments has gotten to be a generic term for all shiny or powdered pigments when in reality pigment is the color that is in any kind of paint whether it is wet or dry (tube, fluid or powder), the mica powder added in is what gives the shine so what we call “pigments” (example - this little piggy pigments) typically has mica in it. Hi Carmella! 🤗👋🏻 You’re very welcome and thank YOU! So the Valspar is actually an untinted base paint (like you get at the store and they tint a paint for you, only it’s the untinted base you want with no color added as you’ll tint it yourself). The Varathane is the varnish and that combined with the untinted base paint makes up your pouring medium for the blooms technique. I don’t know what brands are available in Spain so I’m not much help there but the varnish you want is a water based clear gloss polyurethane varnish. Art varnishes can work also, I use jo sonja clear gloss varnish with other paint bases myself. I’ve seen others use Liquitex gloss varnish, atelier gloss varnish, Vallejo gloss varnish. If it helps I have a beginners tutorial on the blooms technique and explain the different components (video 36), most of the brands in that video are US but you’ll get an idea of what to look for.
