Thanks for the very interesting background and history of the terminology. I was surprised that you did not mention the reference to Yehudi in the Book of Nehemiah and the archaeological evidence of the Judahite exiles in Babylon populating a district that might be interpreted as "Little Judah".

The Portuguese language also has negative conotations around the word "jew" (judeu). The verb "judiar", mostly used in Brasil, means to disturb, to damage, to do bad things; "judiado" is broken, in bad shape. People use those terms so frequently that they don't even realise the root of the words. A while ago, in Portugal, I had a colleague whom other co-workers called "Judeu". The first time I heard that, I was like "oh, he's jewish? That's new to me". They told me he wasn't really a jew, he was just never seen eating. It really boggled me how silly and unrelated that was, but then I realised that those people might have inherited prejudices from their ancestors. Everybody knows that Portugal was a stage for one of the biggest persecutions against jews, in the XV and XVI centuries, when they were forced to migrate or convert to Catholicism. Many stayed and kept their faith and traditions in secret, so probably not eating gentile food was a sign of suspicion for christians. There's also the prejudice that describes jews as "stingy"... But these are just my guesses. Honestly, I never heard this use of "judeu" while growing up.

As someone myself from a non-Jewish background, I find it a grotesque miscarriage of fortune that the name "Judas" should be so readily reviled, knowing that "Judah" means "praise." By an interesting coincidence, the word "slava," denoting the Slavic people, means "glory" in Russian.

This is interesting how these both terms are used in different languages. In German e.g. "Hebräer" or "Israeliten" are used for Jews in biblical time, the word "Juden" is used for Jews from hellinistic age up to now. In Russian the word "evrey" (hebrew) means ethnical backround and "iudey" means religion.

I wanted to say nice things about you, but when I started seeing all the comments that people gave I don't think I could have done the subject justice, I feel the same as many of the people that said wonderful things about you. I only hope that you could find students that you could share your great understanding of the scripture with and that you could train them so that they can carry on the anointing that you have and that your students will be able to share them with the rest of the world. I don't know whether the offensive verb definition of jew is still in use in US English but while I heard it used in the sense of cheating or overcharging when I was very young, that usage seems entirely to have disappeared in the UK and I haven't heard it for 50 years. That is because the majority still identifying themselves as Israel at the end of the Babylonian exile are from the tribe of Judah . Although they had a some that can be identified as Benjamites as it is written. אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדִ֔י הָיָ֖ה בְּשׁוּשַׁ֣ן הַבִּירָ֑ה וּשְׁמ֣וֹ מׇרְדֳּכַ֗י בֶּ֣ן יָאִ֧יר בֶּן־שִׁמְעִ֛י בֶּן־קִ֖ישׁ אִ֥ישׁ יְמִינִֽי׃ In the fortress Shushan lived a Jew (Yehudi)by the name of Mordecai, son of Jair son of Shimei son of Kish, a Benjaminite. We also know that we had Simonites from the tribe of Shimon. But the majority being from Yehudah they were collectively called Yehudim . Notice it would be rare to find a Tanna or an Amorah with a name Reuven or Zevulin for example. But plenty of Simon Judah’s or levi and Benyamin. This is because they are the ones that were left after the return of the exiles . (Ester 2:5)

In Swedish we use the word Jude and in Danish Jøde. In the south of Sweden we call our selves Göte (Jöte) and in Jutland (Denmark) they are called Jysk or Jydsk in Danish. The south of Sweden is called Götaland (Jötaland) in Swedish. Jutland is also called the Cimbric peninsula and the tribe in the north of Jutland were probably the Cimmerians. They fought a war against Rome in 113 to 101 BC. The Cimmerians attacked Assyria in 680 BC and defeated Lydia in 644 BC. How they ended up in Jutland is unknown, but also Dan and Gat did that. Maybe they came at the same time.The Romans called us Götar Geats or Jeats. In old Norse Gautar.

I think that the story of Babel could possibly document the first time Noah's descendants encountered other flood survivors who either travelled from areas not flooded or who survived it a different way. Their use of a different language may have freaked out the people at the tower of babel's location as they would have never experienced a foreign language before. The difference in language would have been interpreted as a curse placed upon them.

Thanks Doctor ! According to the Mesorah there are six letters in the Hebrew alphabet that can be pronounced in a hard and soft . These are remembered by the siman בג״ד כת״ף. The Ashkenazim know to differentiate four of the six . Although the soft תי״ו they pronounce as a ‘S’ rather than ‘TH’ . The Sefardim only differentiate three of the six . They have no soft תי״ו. The Yemenites are the only ones that differentiate all six . The גימ״ל with a דגש is pronounced with a ‘J ‘ sound. So for example on the blessing on wine they would say ‘ Boreh Pri Hajofan ‘ .

As a non-Jew, I have always struggled with the etiquette of calling my Jewish friends "Jews" and have preferred to use the adjectival "Jewish." It's precisely for the reason you mention-- based on context and intonation, calling someone "a Jew" can be perceived as an insult. Also, to me, the very fact that this conundrum exists is further evidence of the historical persecution of Jews. For what other people on earth is the most direct, nominative definition of who they are just as likely to be heard as a curse rather than a definition? I can't think of one. It's for this reason that I prefer the word "Jewish." And, I suppose when one thinks about it, referring to someone's nationality or ethnicity through an adjectival form may be the only English word choice available, i.e. "Irish" is a perfect example, no? I enjoy your channel, Dr. Abramson. The archaeological post you did some time ago about Jewish soldiers in the Roman army was fascinating.

The speaker confused the issue, and did not emphasize the fact that the letter J did not exist in any one of the three classical western languages - Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. It is not simply the word; it is the phoneme. What is its origin? Another way to put it might be: what is the first extant manuscript in western history with the letter J in it? Oral usage of course precedes written text; but it would be nice to know the first use of this letter, written on a page, or carved into stone, or stamped on a coin, whatever.

I suspect there were depths to the Hebraic scribal traditions about which current rabbinic interpretations are entirely uninformed. The hapax legomenon for ladder in the story of Jacob's ladder is interesting because the correct Semitic consonantal ordering for ladder is not slm, but rather sml, as attested many times in Akkadian. The consonantal ordering slm is the word for comet. Interestingly, the sml in Akkadian is represented by the cuneiform signs I-UDU. The same thing happened with the name Israel, which was derived from the oft used cuneiform sign ISH, or rather IŠ, which also represented šadu, meaning mountain (as in the Shadday of El Shadday), sahar which was eperum, meaning dust, and, along with other meanings, it carried the meaning of laughter through formulations such as iš or isiš, which was referred to by the East Semitic cognate for the source of Isaac's name. Isaac and El Shadday are presented in the same section of Genesis. Examples such as these are plentiful, but current rabbinic interpretations are misinformed regarding the truth of the Hebraic sceiptures.

Interesting about connotations and pejorative use of the word "Jew". The Welsh word for Jew is "Iddew" (capital i, iddew; pl. Iddewon, the dd in Welsh is the voiced dental fricative /ð/ and corresponds to the 'the' in the English words 'this', 'together', 'with'. Welsh also didn't have the 'j' sound and probably took the word direct from Greek). This is not pejorative (unless someone was to add something to it, obviously). When I've head Welsh-speakers make anti-Semitic remarks or tropes they use the English word 'Jew' (in the Welsh sentence). It seems that 'Jew' is a word which is seen as being more pejorative and, maybe, using the English word rather than Iddew, is used as some kind of a marker to make the concept stand out.

Who knew etymology could be so interesting?

Another great post from the good Dr! I try to explain it in terms of a Family Tree, branching down. I start with Shem/ Semite, then Hebrew then Israelite (from Jacob), and finally as a generic catchall "Jewish". The word/ term "Jew/ Jewish" has been quite a point of contention in my life. According to my family heritage and DNA, I am "Jewish". However, since we are not observant of Judaism, we are rejected by the conservative sects, and told not to use the word in reference to ourselves. Since we are referring to our ethnicity, and not religion, we typically use Israelite or Hebrew. If I am being specific, I say I am predominantly Sephardic. My best educated guess as to which Tribes I come from, Benjamin and Menassah (Joseph).

I'm not interested in joining a religion, but I have an interest in studying the origins of Christianity.

I always thought Abram was called Hebrew after crossing the Jordan River into the land of Canaan?

I've been publishing a lot of videos myself lately centering in on the conflict going on between Israel and Hamas....and years ago the word Jew would somewhat stick in my craw (so to speak) because I grew up with it often being used in a deroragory fashion....and with the climate now and so much anti-semitism being around it's being used in that fashion again more and more. I have come to somewhat embrace the word now, along with the word Zionism which is often spoken in a derogatory fashion, as in "oh...you're just a Zionist appologist". Anyway....thanks again for another great video sir. I've watched over a dozen of your videos now...maybe even 20 or so, and I always come away with more knowledge and understaning. Blessings.

Since the other tribes disappeared into sand as you say, and more and more members of other tribes identified as "Judahites" as time went by, what is the thinking when they formed a new country in 1948 to call it Israel and not Judea? Also, since all 12 tribes were in Egypt, what tribe did Moses come from? And finally, what is the origin of the term "goy" and does it, like Jew, have a negative usage? Thanks.

The word Jew Ijudi shares root letters with Ijud "communion". The mixed multitude of all nations under de sky mixed with the sons of Israel are called "the ones who made communion" that is the meaning of Ijudim those who made Ijud. That is to fullfil the promess given to Abraham "You are going to be father of multitude of nations" and "In you will be blessed all the families of the earh" The Ijudim are the ones who made Ijud and are from all the nations of the earth.

It's interesting how some Jewish individuals dislike the word 'Jew' I watched a recent video of the actor Micheal Rapaport outlining the reasons why he despises the use of the term 'Jew' On the other hand the youtuber Melinda Strauss in one of her recent videos proudly refers to herself as a 'Jew'.
