At 70 seconds, this is one of the longest picks I've seen him do, and it was only a four-pin lock. Not only that, you have to know the secret trick lever. I suspect in practice this locked doesn't get picked much in the field.
@texchu8331
@texchu8331 4 жыл бұрын
@@cuthbertallgood7781 I think in the field, they'd just destroy it. They can find out about the trick lever online, but there's nothing they can do about the angled pins - that just takes pure skill to be able to feel those out and place those angles precisely.

@@davidoshea381 My mother had a commercial medeco lock on her front door. You'd need a shotgun with slugs to breach it. Her locksmith wasn't screwing around. Don't lose your keys! If I felt I needed a pick-resistant lock I wouldn't hesitate to get a medeco core. As it is you can open my front door with a size 12 shoe so yeah the lock is good enough.

My thoughts exactly! Like he said though, you need to know how this type of locks work in order to pick it in such a short time. A secret lever and pins having to be moved at an angle are something only experienced pickers would be able to handle without panicking

Some vending machines can be _really_ profitable depending on their content and location. Of course their owner would put the best lock they could afford (on their profit margin) on them. It's not about a bag of doritos. It's about money worth of, like, 500 doritos bags per week. Largely without employed labor problem.

It's not like you can't get ASSA/Abloy/Medeco locks in the US. It's just that Americans seem to think that $150-200 per cylinder is too expensive... So they get a Kwikset for $25.

For those that wonder why "a snack machine has so high security" - no its not for the snacks, but because these machines contain money, especially those with bill validators, and machines could go unmonitored for a very long time. Cash theft, even by authorized people, is very common, why some locks are electronic and have logging capabilities. Nowadays, they mostly use cashless systems either with credit card, or a internal "token" (RFID) you have to swipe against a reader, or a electronic "key" that is charged with money at a charging station - is inserted. Thus they have, on vending machines, started to go back to the simple "ASSA" lock with almost no pick security at all. Since theres no money to steal. Same with P-meters. They usually only take electronic payment now, and thus they have gone back to a very simple "ASSA" lock just for a simple anti-tamper. The actual credit card reader however have both anti-tamper seals and electronic anti-tamper too.

Don't be lulled into a false sense of "meh" by the speed in which LPL picked this. It is *much* more complicated than he showed here, and remember, his skill is off the charts. It's pretty amazing how that rotating pins key works. In conjunction with the side-bar inside, the key pins are actually like little tiny single-disc disc-detainer locks. Each pin is one tiny (but very "thick/long" disc. Each pin has one true "gate" for the side bar, and some have one or more false gates you can fall into with the wrong key, or not rotating the pin far enough or too far. Each pin also has its own backstop on the opposite side to prevent over-rotation, which would possibly seize the lock semi-permanently if the wrong key were inserted. In short, be amazed he can pick this. Few people can, and Medeco didn't get that lock rating by accident.

Thanks for the content 👍 Your videos have inspired me to pick up the skill as I frequently get asked to help open cars when people lock their keys in. A couple of times neighbors kid's were locked out while parents were at work as well. On residential locks, do you have any plans to create a recommended locks video or video series? I didn't see anything targeted in the Playlist or anything recent on your videos. Edit, BTW I helped the police department get into one of their squad cars at Dennys a few months ago, I had almost forgotten. 🤣

I am a small vending machine operator, a side business. My machines have the traditional cylinder key lock. I have periodically gotten calls from site location that a machine was found open. I thought I was going crazy, but it can't be that I don't know how to properly re-engage a lock after a fill call to one of my machines, and check that it is actually locked. So i have seen now on YT that cylinder locks are not all that hard to pick with a cheap device. And even these better, standard key Medico locks can be defeated. It's frustrating. If they are not opening the machine, they are using coat hanger contraptions to steal product by dislodging it from the coils.....

This is interesting as I have to fill vending machines at my job. All of the ones I fill have the types of locks that use the cylindrical-shaped keys, I’ve saw many of them broken into with a drill. I have noticed a few newer ones with a little ball in the center of the core, which I assume is to deter drill attacks.
