Watercolor Online with Michael Solovyev

Today we are back outside! Montreal weather keeps surprising me - the winter is not there yet! I used this opportunity for a plein air session not too far from my house. This former fire station is one of the oldest buildings in Lachine still standing, constructed between 1914 and 1917. Let's paint it!

When I was little this building, the old fire station was the public library and I used to stop on my way home from school. I spent many hours there. There used to be a restaurant on the corner of 45th Street with the best french fries and old juke boxes at each table where you put coins in and you could play music at your table, that burnt down on New year's Eve in the early 90's . Beautiful painting of a lovely building.

Wow, this building truly has a beautiful history! I have only lived in Lachine for a few years, so thank you very much for sharing, did not know it was a library before.

@@watercoloronlinemsolovyev I believe the library on 32nd Ave was originally built in 1974. Then the old firehouse became I believe an architects office.

I just learned last year that the tower on the old fire houses was there to dry the fire hoses . Thanks for the video .

Beautiful day! And you got your sleeves rolled. Must be fairly warm too. Weird weather we're having, huh? Thought for sure I'd be snowing by the way you looked the last time you painted outside. Love the painting! :)

What I love most about water colour is the sunlight-shadow contrast and how beautifully the colours run and fade... And also! Who needs a Rigger brush when you have Rat-tail brush!! lol Hello Michael, I've been a follower for a while but my other account (April the cat) was deleted (apparently I said something wrong, which may have happened lol)... Anyway, I've come back with this new page and went looking for you straight away! I've loved your work from the second I stumbled on to your channel and look forward to seeing more... Oh and just one question... When was this filmed?? I only ask because it was -4c here all day in Peterborough and your water would have been slushy!! lol

No, for fast sketches made under 25 minutes there is no need in wetting the paper as it does not have enough time to dry.

Hi Bill, thank you! During plein airs there is a lot of noise and the time is very limited, so I cannot talk more and not have the background music. More in-depth explanations are reserved for the studio videos :)

I think the music is detrimental to your paintings, better no music!

It is outside so without music there would just be a lot of noise. But in the studio videos, sometimes there is music, sometimes there isn't. There are people who love music (me included) and ones who don't. Gotta find a middle ground :)
