WYE VALLEY WALK FEATURING KINGS CAPLE, SELLACK AND HOARWITHY
"Kings Caple, Sellack and Hoarwithy”
Filmed 1st October 2018
Post-production completed 17th August 2019
I had spent most of my childhood living on the fringes of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so I felt I knew the area very well. However, the Wye Valley AONB also covers places further upstream that I’m a lot less familiar with. This is around the section of the River Wye between Ross-on-Wye and Hereford, so I decide to explore more of this part of the Wye Valley. My walk follows a route between Kings Caple, Sellack and Hoarwithy, three villages I have not visited at all before now…..
Filmed in the Wye Valley in the county of Herefordshire. Locations include Foy Bridge, Kings Caple, Sellack Bridge, Sellack and Hoarwithy. This is part of the series of films shot in 2018 celebrating 25 years of “The Solitary Rambler”.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.

Spent a weekend in Hoarwithy in 1957 camped on a hillside overlooking a small farm house just outside the village.canooed from the bridge to Ross and Monmouth.Even took part in a small soccer tournament behind the pub.Where that football match was behind the pub there is no sighn of it today.I was 15 yrs old then I,m now79 yrs old.Beautiful memories

beautiful. I used to drive through Hoarwithy regularly and was always fascinated by the Italian style church. Now I'm retired I would love to visit soon

Thanks for posting this Patrick. The visit to the Italianate church in Hoarwithy doesn't do justice to it's wonderful, if quirky, Italian marble columns. There is a beautifully picturesque walk from Hoarwithy towards Redbrook following the River Wye to Seven Sisters Rocks where from the high ground of carboniferous limestone there are fabulous views down the river. The New Harp Inn is a welcome pitstop in winter with its large log fire. Many of the local farmers congregate there to relax with an ale after a hard day.

Hi Patrick, you're so fortunate to be able to tour so many interesting and beautiful places, these views are outstanding like something you'd find in magazines, scenic portraits even. We sometimes tend to forget what fantastic countryside we have and its always wonderful (There I said it too) 😉 to share your travels, and with such intricate detail in your commentary which is always interesting it all adds to the experience and each piece of music accompanies the videos excellently. Morning Vivien, this is one my favourites I shot last year so it was wonderful (!) to finally get around to editing this recently. It was a lovely walk that wasn't too long giving me time to explore the churches in more detail and to enjoy a part of the Wye Valley (for the most part) I've not seen before. Thankyou, a noble river in stunning gently rolling scenery and the added interest of three fine churches, Hoarwithy with its Italianate tower remined me of Portmerion, which I think is based on the cathedral in Sienna,Italy. Your wonderful walk in such ideal countryside is a pure delight.

Another of my postal rounds . Sellack is actually delivered by the Peterstow Postman .I played football for Sellack but the ground was actually situated in St Owens Cross , some miles away . Thanks , Patrick .

I don't know what the Wonderful count was in that film Patrick but there can't be too many,because it really was,what a great film again,exactly the right amount of pieces to camera,information,and music with the scenes,and all spaced so perfectly,you've become so good at this,and great music too,the last Church,St Catherine's was magnificent,imagine coming across that and not expecting it,thanks again for all your hard work and effort,it must take so long to make one of these,from initially planning the walk,gathering information,all the stop start filming as you film yourself with the tripod then have to go back to retrieve it,the editing,writing and playing the music and fitting it in,I'm amazed that this is not your profession,thankyou for sharing mate and all the best,look forward as always to the next one, Pete 👍

I became pretty conscious of the amount of wonderfuls, but hey I meant it all, it was just wonderful being in that less familiar part of the Wye Valley to me. As you say making each film does take a long time, especially when you're working full-time, so it's a hobby I fit in when I can and when I'm in the right mood too, but I'm very pleased with this finished film and it's one of my personal favourites out of all the films I shot last year. @@solitaryrambler But it's one of the best things about your films mate,that the piece to camera sections are so natural and spontaneous and unscripted,like you will often just tell us a short story or if you come across someone on your walk,it's what makes them so brilliant and makes us feel you're talking just to us,don't change a thing we love them,I'v had the pleasure of watching every minute of all 119 and still eagerly await every new one,thanks so much Pat for all that effort you put in its really appreciated,all the best,Pete.

You certainly spoiled me with not only a trio of Beautiful Churchs but by seeing the insides too...Thank You so much Patrick ..All different designs to .. I also loved the bridges espesh the suspension bridge ...it was nice seeing you so happy about your surroundings of course seeing them for the first time added to this...As always thank you for sharing your day with us all ...Frank & Lee..

This was the perfect walk really, short and not too strenuous providing enough time to enjoy spending time inside each of the churches, which in most cases I don't do in most films due to the time factor, so it was a real pleasure on this occasion. Foy Bridge at the start was the only location I've ever been to before, so for the rest of the film it was all new so a great one to do. Thanks as always Frank and Lee for watching. A fascinating film I've now watched twice. We will be staying at Hentland next week on our first visit to the Wye Valley with our main activity being dog walking. The music was rather haunting, a bit sad maybe! And I was a bit confused by the start (at Foy bridge) and finish (car at Kings Caple). I was expecting you to have to get back to Foy, but start and finish at Kings Caple makes sense, along with a trip to Foy. These are minor points - the countryside was beautifully presented.

Just arrived on the Greek Island of Tilos, where I will be doing a number of walks in an attempt to further update a walking guide originally produced by a fellow UK citizen when he visited here a number of years ago. Now you are in my backyard Patrick and it's so nice to here you say it was 'wonderful.' I couldn't agree more of course. I know Sellack and Hoarwithy (Saxon meaning White Beamed Tree) but not Kings Caple so much. In fact I've swam a good section of that river underneath Sellack Bridge. Here's a link to a short video. It is unusual in the Wye Valley countryside and the scene for many a TV show not that I know which. Any way, Patrick that was 'wonderful.' There's that word again. Well you have a great backyard Mark, or should I say wonderful! :) I think I felt just so excited on the day I filmed this because, apart from Foy Bridge, I had never seen any of that part of the Wye Valley before, so my enthusiasm just kept pouring out like water from a tap. The three villages were lovely, and I could live in Hoarwithy - great origin of the name, White Beamed Tree, thanks for that. Thanks for to the link to your video too, I'll have a watch of that later. Anyway thanks for being your usual "wonderful" self Mark by taking the time to watch this, as well as giving your great feedback on this part of the Wye Valley you know so well. All the best.
