Great tips! I heard a clever one years ago: a mother training her young children would say every night, "before we go to bed, we put the house to bed". Ie: they would make sure the house was tidied up, toys put away, etc. I always thought that was a clever way to say it.

Hi Ann, I love that tip and saying. I have never heard that before so thank you for sharing that. I think it is very relate-able the house really does need to be put to bed each night.

My mom had a friend who would call it “ restoring the house” every night begore going to bed. I like the going to bed one much better

I like that! Especially for kids because they're imaginative so it makes it like a game to them. Many small children would put stuffed animals to bed so it's not hard to extend it to the house.

All excellent ideas to incorporate into your daily routine. As a mom of 4 kids living in a 3 bedroom mobile home until they were 7, 9, 11, 13, my most important trick was to teach them to pick up after themselves. As soon as your little child can walk, you can teach them to put away books and toys in places they can reach. Then praise them like crazy when they do. Children can learn to do laundry, especially towels and jeans, with minimal supervision. Wash dishes, even if they need a step stool. Just bc Mom is home all day doesn't mean she has to do all the housework.

Hi Janet, we do the same here and you probably saw in my video all the helping. I don't really include my children all that much in my videos so that is why I didn't include this topic =) But we also try to teach them as soon as they can do something then they have to help themselves and around the house ! Sounds like you did an amazing job raising kids that will be self sufficient =)

This is really inspiring to me! I have 4 kids too and I tend to do a lot for them because sometimes it’s easier than explaining the task and keeping an eye on them that they complete it and suffer their whining. But I am inspired by you to encourage them to help me more with lots of praise and thanks etc. Thankyou! X

Agreed! Luckily tide pods came out before my son was born, he’s my third. Made it super easy for him to do his own laundry at 5/6 years old. And in my family, if you can’t reach the sink to wash a plate, we start with a chair at 3 and then graduate to a step stool too once they get taller. Girls AND boys!

Yes! I'm living at my daughter's whilst my Granny Flat's being constructed- and she posted a weekly chore chart on the fridge for a daily rotation ('cause who wants to clean up after pets for a week?!) There 6 of us, 3 adults and kids are 11,12 and 18, and it works pretty well!

My sis-in-law bought an inexpensive robot vacuum for me on the last Amazon Prime day. Less than $100. Game changer! It doesn't replace a full, detailed vacuuming, but it helps. I run 'Rosie' everyday in at least two rooms. She picks up the cat hair and litter, chip and cookie crumbs, etc. I love it!

I’m like that too if & when I’m motivated to start cleaning I just put my head down and go. I kind of do most everything that way, sewing & hobbies, organizing, decluttering etc. then I may not do them again for some time after a binge.

Just wanted to say- I adore your kitchen. So charming. People always want to change everything to get the latest style but I love that you’ve kept the green & yellow & the vintage cabinet style. When it’s clean & fresh like yours is, it is very charming & cheerful. I love it. It also shows how people can be content with what they have, freshen it up a little, and it can work beautifully. They don’t have to have an all white kitchen with quartz (because granite is out of style now) counters to be “enough “ and because everyone else does.

Yes! Our house is a similar build-era as hers, and I appreciate the "original" details that remain in her kitchen. It is refreshing to see someone preserving what's already there and suits the age/style of the house. It is sad when someone takes all the unique charm/style out of a home. Not to mention, it is far more sustainable to be content with what we have and tweak/maintain/fix it along the way as needed, rather than gutting and replacing things because we feel like we should "keep up with the Jonses."

One habit that has saved me a lot of time and clutter, is to fold the laundry as it comes out of the dryer. It eliminates loading clothes into the basket and walking it to another place to fold. Once it's folded at the laundry space (or put on hangers) it's so easy to walk it to the appropriate room and put away. i never get distracted by doing it this way and by avoiding the basket, clothes don't have the chance to get wrinkled either.
@shannontorrens1

I love that tip, I wish I could do that. Our washer and dryer are in the dirty garage so there is no where to do that but maybe some day we will have a laundry room. =)

I do this too! I just sit cross legged next to my dryer and fold as I pull the warm clothes out
@katiegleaves3792
@katiegleaves3792 Жыл бұрын
yep, I do this too. For me, one set laundry day doesn't work, but that's ok. With my schedule, I find it easier to stay on top of it if I do a load or two throughout the week. I have a sturdy tension rod (meant for a shower curtain) in my laundry area, where I hang things to air-dry, and it can't take too much weight (so, a full day of laundry would overload it, AND me). Since my laundry area is also not in the coziest, cleanest part of the house (cold dusty basement) here's the best habit I adopted YEARS ago: I have a long rectangular laundry basket that is perfect for setting the folded clothes in, making it easy to fold clean laundry directly from the dryer right into the basket, then carry to the bedrooms to be put away. If we don't have time to put it all away right then, at least it is only one basket, it is folded and ready to use or put away soon (and easy to distinguish from the dirty laundry hamper)
@KpopGrandma

@Shannon Torrens Back in the day, we all had garage laundry areas, so I understand. I guess the most important thing is not stopping until it's done. I used to be so bad at throwing it on my couch or bed and never getting back to it.
@maureenmillikan6518
@maureenmillikan6518 Жыл бұрын
I do that too. I have a small rod with lots of empty hangers and just pull everything out of the dryer and hang up, then carry to closets and hang. Other items I fold and put on top of dryer, then carry to correct places in the house. I wash two loads a day, so laundry is always done.

I do pretty much the way you do it . I put the throw pillows in a closet so I only put them on when a guest comes over ( game changer) I don’t leave a room without tidying up Whenever I leave a room I take whatever does not belong to the correct area When you bring something to your home , put it away immediately or give it a home . When you vacuum regularly it keeps everything put away properly ( I hated to vacuum but my stick dyson I love to vacuum a few times a week anytime I grab it I keep vacuuming until the battery dies on high which is 20 min and my 2 story 4 bathroom can be vacuumed fully super quick within that time …I make it game )

We have five kids and my favorite hack since we’ve minimized has been to assign everyone in the family just one after dinner job during the week. After dinner we take five minutes and everyone does their job. Each kid has had the same job for years. One vacuums, one straightens the shoes, one wipes the counter, one wipes the table, and one wipes the bathroom counter and mirror. I start a load of laundry, and my husband loads the dishwasher. Then on Saturday morning everyone has three additional chores. It has made my life so much easier because it keeps us up on dishes and laundry all week and then on Saturday we all get the house cleaned in less than 30 minutes. It’s SO much easier than trying to keep up with chore charts and helps me feel supported and like not everything falls on me. I do also try to do one or two other chores each day, but even if I don’t get to them it’s not a big deal. I remember being so overwhelmed with housework when we had more stuff, and I would not want to go back to that feeling again for anything.

I love it when I get in “the zone” for anything. I roll with it whether it is DIY, organizing, cleaning or decluttering. It also seems like a no brainer for me (esp in the kitchen) to wash and wipe things down as a matter of course Bcuz if I have ran a bit of soapy water, I like to use it on everything around while it’s nice and hot and soapy. It makes no sense to me to have to wait for hot water, get the soap, waste product, find a rag, etc more than one time. I look at it as having “multifunctional” uses all at one time. Like batching. I have a small plastic bin in the sink that I use often. So the only thing I really need for motivation is to just set up that little bit of soapy water and I then find that I’m more willing to clean off more things with it once I’ve taken the couple of minutes to set that up. A long time ago I discovered that trying to run half a big sink full of dish water was actually demotivating for me. So hence my little “shoe box” washing bin helps me tackle it nearly every single day and stops it from getting too much and accumulating. It’s also easier to pre rinse, degrease, or soak things in the same sink at the same time and keeps my dish water from getting gross too quickly. Lol. Oh right. And for utensils I keep a ceramic holder in there for all dirty utensils so they can soak in there for awhile and also I don’t wind up cutting myself on sharp things. 😅😅

I think a good idea is teach the kids to pick up their stuff. That’s a really big help and it teaches them responsibility. But anyone that uses anything needs to pick up after themselves. I know now that moms should get the children to help with cooking and cleaning, gardening helping mom and dad with things it is so good for the children it gives them lots of confidence which is a great thing to have in life. It takes time to show the children things but it’s so rewarding . Good tips

I struggle with the night time tidy up. I'm usually so tired. Like you said it's worth the time though. Set up the coffee and hope for the best. I'm really glad that you emphasized the reality of organization. I think a house that flows for it's owner is quite beautiful.... even with mix matched baskets and bins. People get so fixed on aesthetics. I always just tried to enjoy having my kids in a clean home. BTW I love the kitchen tile. So cheerful.

I do most of these too, a little at a time goes a long way especially in bathrooms, because water can do so much damage! The evening kitchen reset is my biggest struggle too - I have to hang on to that feeling of coming down the next morning to it being clean and clear as my encouragement. Clean clear and functional is the goal!
@katiegleaves3792
@katiegleaves3792 Жыл бұрын
yes - it took me a little while to embrace this too, but as another KZfaqr says (loosely quoted) "tomorrow me will thank me for what TONIGHT me got done". It is important to allow yourself to build a habit. It takes time. It's also important to realize that the EVENING clean up doesn't work for everyone - find the time that works best for your schedule/family/mentality - the important thing is to keep up on these tasks daily (whatever time works for you - for a long time it was LUNCHTIME for me, while working from home) to make your days flow better, and not let the tasks build up into bigger chores for later.

When u talked about the motivation to clean i couldn't agree more. No one i lve seen has mentioned it and i watch tons of videos for inspo. But if i tell myself tomorrow im going to clean for 2 hours i have no idea if things will pop up or how ill feel tomorrow so i definitely take advantage of those moments of cleaning inspo and I get more done than the days when its more forced

Good content! I’m good about not leaving the bed unmade. My husband helps with that- just whoever returns to the bedroom first in the morning. I can’t stand to get into an unmade bed! And I can’t abide having to look at icky dishes in the morning. We always do the dishes as we are cooking, then finish up after dinner. But I am not good at tidying up or resetting the house at night! I’m a real sleepyhead & would rather stick a fork in my eye than have to do more than get ready for bed. Wish I were better at that. Maybe if I started earlier I could do it. Also, we’re retired, so there are no little people around with all of their stuff.

Nice to see a corded Dyson this days. Corded Dysons are often very cheap as second hand so I think a full review was very interesting for a lot of people.

I really enjoyed this video, watching old clips mixed in with more recent ones. Great tips, I try to do as many of these as I can. I know what you mean about motivation to clean. Some days all I have the energy or time for is tidying and laundry ( on top of homeschooling & cooking), and other days I am able to tackle the cleaning. I find the FlyLady App works for me. Merry Christmas! 🎄😊

The less you have the less you need to clean. That’s what I love about minimalism. Why 2 sitting rooms? My fantasy home would have a den for hubby and all his books. We live in a 1 bedroom which is very economical, but crammed with books. He is a bookworm.

We don't have it set up like that anymore, but we didn't design this house and that is how we put our furniture in when we first moved in here. If I had all the money in the world then of course I would design my own home exactly how I want it. lol

I have a lot of books. I wish that my bookshelves had glass doors on them. That would keep any dust from settling on the books and shelves.

Thank you Shannon! I love the Making your Bed first thing is so helpful! It starts me off to my best day so far! I am decluttering area by area as you suggested and I can see it is working a tiny bit at a time! Thank you SO much for all your shows! They are my favorite and seem to get me motivated to get going and keep going! I love how you do laundry too! I like to that way too all on one day! I was born in 1955 so I’m so close to your mom’s age. I love seeing how you both interact! You both get along so well! Keep going Shannon with your shoes! I grew up in Monrovia, CA born in Pasadena, so I wondered where you live close to. I grew up going to San Clemente, beach every summer! I live in Utah now. Thanks again! ❤

My only niggle is with making the bed first thing. Really, you should leave the covers off the bed for as long as possible to let the mattress air. I always make the bed before bedtime but I leave it as long as my schedule allows.

Hi Dani, the whole shoes in the house or not in the house doesn't seem to make any difference in our home. I have been over this with my husband so many times because we live in a warm place so everyone is inside and outside all day and it drives me nuts. I tell them its worse when they go outside barefoot and then they come back in barefoot and their feet are black with dirt. It would make sense if they would actually wear shoes outside then take them off inside but that will obviously never happen in our home LOL. So I have just accepted this hahaha.
