Video Description:
Three separate livestock shipments arrived this week. I've never had so many in a single week, which meant for me... a lot of filming!
The first shipment is the next round of clean up crew from Live Aquaria. I'm trying to beat back the hair algae in the 24 gallon Fluval mixed reef tank. So here comes 25 astrea snails, a lawnmower blenny, two large blue legged hermit crabs, 25 cerith snails, and an emerald crab. We'll have to let them all settle in for a few weeks to see if they're working at all!
The next shipment is from Coral Vault. You may know this company as Tyler's Tanks. He's a California boy who now lives with his family in Fort Worth, TX. He just launched his new website and retail store, and is getting his coral farm ready for action. He send me 8 LPS pieces for my tank. I mis-name most of them, but luckily he helps me out. Zoas, lepto, favia, hammer, and frogspawn coral just to name a few treasures! Check out his new site www.coral-vault.com
And lastly, the moment I've been waiting for your months... well really years, the clownfish have arrived! I cannot thank Marine Depot and Sea & Reef for sponsoring this. Sea & Reef sent me 10 Premium Black Ice Ocellaris Clownfish, and two bonus Premium Longfin Black Storm Clowns! What a crazy shipment! Will they acclimate well to the tank? I sure hope so, especially since I have 10 bubble tip anemones arriving next week!

I just recently added a 2nd pair of clowns to my tank. Yes I went against rule of thumb thinking it’d be fine. But pretty instantly they went at it. It seems quite random they swim together then randomly have a stare down and only a few times did they butt heads. I was wondering if since they aren’t fighting to the death if they are maybe establishing pairs again. But I shut the lights off and they settled down. I think I’m gonna have to take 2 of them back. I have a 32g . Just not enough room for them to establish territories as pairs I guess.

Thanks for the video! I noticed the lawnmower blenny being drip acclimated with clean up crew. Not trying to nitpick, but shouldn’t we acclimate fish and inverts separately? Between salinity levels and potential use of copper shouldn’t we keep them separated? Just a question and keep up the great work!
@MyFirstFishTank
@MyFirstFishTank 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Krishna, and yeah, you are right. Probably best to keep them separate, especially if it's known that copper is used. I used to by from an LFS that used copper, so I absolutely had to drip them separately. But I've actually visited the importer in LA who sells these Live Aquaria fish, and they use methylene blue when the livestock first arrives, and then no copper. So these are probably okay to drip together, but your point is totally valid!

Everything looks so great!! Wish I did something similar to the clown harem when I set up my 20g. I love clowns, and its a shame I cant add anymore, we all know how agressive clowns get. I would like to add another 3 or so. Can that be done still?
@MyFirstFishTank
@MyFirstFishTank 3 жыл бұрын
Probably not, your instinct is right. 20 gallons is really small, and so is my 40 gallon tank! And once two get established, they would probably go after and kill any new clowns! But they sure are cool aren't they!

@obriwan
@obriwan 3 жыл бұрын
@@MyFirstFishTank in my experience emerald crabs have only eaten the flesh off my zoas, and it’s usually a mix of when they get larger in size and don’t have an adequate supply of algae. I would recommend keeping a close eye on yours, especially judging by how well kept and clean your tank looks. I ended up dumping a few of mine in my refugium after a while, and they ended up doing amazing in there until I found a new tank for them. So if worse comes to worst dumping them in a refugium if not another tank should suffice.

How long do you have to wait before you add anomies to the tank need to know tank looks good btw
@MyFirstFishTank
@MyFirstFishTank 3 жыл бұрын
Good question Jack. Not a super easy answer. Usually you hear the advice that you should wait several months, if not a year before adding anemones, and that is good advice. But what that advice is really saying is you need to know your tank and your water parameters need to be super stable. So as long as things are stable, you can add anemones any time after that. I actually already have a few small anemones in the tank, but two of them seem to be sick, so I'm just holding off on adding any more until they recover or die. Thanks for watching!

Great video so I want to keep 2 pair of clowns only what size tank you recommend ?
@MyFirstFishTank
@MyFirstFishTank 2 жыл бұрын
So, that can be tricky. Two pairs is challenging because typically on a group of clowns, one will become dominant and turn female, so getting two pairs is hard. You're best bet is to stick with two clowns, or go with a minimum 120 gallon tank and do a harem of a lot of clowns! keep watching these videos and you will see that my harem has failed in my tank, and the 12 clowns are now down to three!

I have 30 mocha's from the same clutch. They are 160 days old and doing Great! They are currently in a 13.5 fluval AIO tank, with 2 BTA. Wht size tank would be suitable for them to grow up in together?
@MyFirstFishTank
@MyFirstFishTank 3 жыл бұрын
That is a great question Pam. I know BRS did a clownfish harem tank with around 30 clowns, and they went with a 120 gallon tank. The real tricks is trying to reduce aggression. You can do this by feeding several times a day, providing enough habitat, and spreading out aggression. Clowns have about a 2 foot home zone, so if a dominant couple sets up in the middle of the tank, they might protect up to 4 feet in length. So a 4 foot long tank would be the minimum. My experiment with a 40 gallon breeder tank makes me think that a 120 would be the way to go for sure!

How are you going to stop aggression and could you do this in a 20 gallon?
@MyFirstFishTank
@MyFirstFishTank 3 жыл бұрын
Well, here's how I will try to stop the aggression. First, I bought captive bred fish that just tend to be more docile. I'm feeding 4x each day, I aquascaped with lots of hiding places for the fish, I made sure the tank was over 2 feet wide to give space for the fish, and I'm going to add a lot of anemones so that there is a lot of habitat for them. But that being said, this is an experiment. The research I did said you shouldn't try a clownfish harem tank with anything smaller than 60-75 gallons. So I'm going to have to watch them closely as they get larger, and possibly move or rehome as need be!

Hey thanks Arthur. You know, I borrowed the coral dip process from a friend of mine. My understanding is that the coral amino and lugol dip as last stage is meant for healing and stressed or sick corals. Honestly, the answer is probably just 2 safely. If you want to do a clownfish harem like this, you will need to do a few things. Get the fish from the same clutch, and small. Feed four times each day, build an aquascape with lots of places to hide, and add a lot of anemones.
