The sad part is when you hear interviews of former slaves, the slaves describe it as "turning them out like cattle." They had nothing and nowhere to start. It must have been a difficult experience.
@demogog3449
@demogog3449 3 жыл бұрын
I have thought about that a lot as a student of history. It is not taught in History books. One historian said that up to half of all freed slaves died early after being set free from starvation and exposure.
@demogog3449
@demogog3449 3 жыл бұрын
@MAAHAQQ a few slaves were given land and then it was decided that the land would go back to the Southern plantation owners and enslavers who had owned them before. This was affirmed in court case after court case. So they would reclaim there land and offer the freedman the chance to be sharecroppers which was feudalism. They usually were offered a percentsge of the crops to use as feed and sell to money and they often were offered former slave quarters to live in. And former slaves were also recruited to farm the land with often only meager room and board as payment. There was no education for freedman and no skills training so they could learn a trade. There was also a massive resistance to integration of freedman into mainstream society. In the 10 years after the war where Reconstruction was attempted freedmen were voted into office state and federal. They were allowed to vote. They were allowed to work the same jobs as white men for the same pay. There was funds available to help them get on their feet and transition to freedom. There were cities or sections of cities where black businesses and workers thrived and governed and prospered. After President Hayes was elected illegally Reconstruction was abandoned and the South was allowed to implement Jim Crow. They also suppressed voting and went so far as to murder politically active freedmen and so called white carpet baggers who were winning some elections in the South as Republicans. The progressives in the North lost power as Republicans became focused on building the new and prosperous economy. As the Civil War gave way to the gilded age the fight for civil rights was all but abandoned and the North turned a blind eye to the mirage of seperate but equal. People started to think that at least they have it better than before and they are free. Also they didn't want a bunch of freedmen coming to the North with no jobs or money.
@demogog3449
@demogog3449 3 жыл бұрын
@MAAHAQQ in some places that was happening. But then white people railed against freedmen taking their jobs away. But many were basically hired as almost slave labor or incarcerated for vagrancy or having debts or stealing food. And then jails and prisons hired put work crews for pennies on the dollar paying them nothing. Often this provided a kickback to the Warden Shawshank Redemption style. This led to longer sentences for blacks convicted of crime and a want to keep them reliant on the system to survive and to rob them of any hope.

@@kenchan3755 I'm gonna go with yes. The temptation to believe you're better than others for any and all reasons can be strong. You have to educate and humble yourself throughout your life not to fall into that trap, in my opinion. A lot of us have knee jerk reactions to things like that which we're then ashamed of. I've been told that your first reaction is what you've been taught to believe, and your second reflects who you really are as a person.

... How? That's *all* the Media talks about. Blacks good, Whites bad. Slavery, Racism, yada yada, portray blacks as noble/forgiving/better, whites as bitter, miserable dicks (Who cant dance, because that somehow is not racist) It's always the same stick, just varies in how the stick is used to beat whitey, and what liberal persona/organisation is swinging it to make him/itself feel virtuous and good. I have grown up with this shit. A constant, never-ending bombardment of telling me I suck, that I am not only inherently bad, but also, just by virtue of existing, oppressing others - all because of an immutable characteristic I cannot change (And wouldn't, if only out of sheer spite, by now). And I get told this by people to whom statistics and observable reality do not matter. Fuck you, "They have Guts".
