8:33 for my series recap including the season 4 finale which just aired the Beginning Part 1 and 2, before then is just talking about time travel concepts from the show like time loops (which was what the Red Forest actually was including the red leaf that the series ended with), Bootstrap Paradox (Ramse using time travel to create time travel and Athan travelling back in time to create the cult that would create him), Predestination Paradox and self-fulfilling prophecy (Athan thinking that the death of Eliza proved that he was the witness). Episode 10 and 11 aired in a two part series finale last night that saw Cole saved because time owed him one and Olivia turned out to be the Origin of the virus after all and Deacon united with his brother and Jennifer invented unicorn and Ramses was united with his son.

@@flaviushonoriusemperorofro3903 It was in no way confusing. Also...Cassie _didn't_ give birth to the Witness. Olivia was the Witness. I dont think you can say the shows confusing if your issues are things like "i stopped watching before they explained what was happening". Although if your ability to understand TV is anything like your ability to understand English, I see why youd be confused.

I completely agree with you but sadly the reason why this and shows like this are not as popular as they should be is because most of today's shows only care about ratings. The most important being the 18-35 demo which unfortunately seems to not like sci-fi/mystery shows at all, or any kind of show that involves having to think or to use some intelligence in order to understand it . It seems that the majority of this young demo only enjoys shallow, reality based drama shows. Who's sleeping with who? Who's cheating on who and so forth. Sooo many of my favorite shows are sci-fi based and always seem to get canceled way before it's had a real chance to develop and thrive because society has become what I like to call, "Kardashian," where no real thought or intelligence is needed to watch something and the only important thing is how flashy or cool someone looks or something is and how much backstabbing drama is involved. I'm just happy that 12 Monkeys had a chance to tell its complete story and not be canceled prematurely like sooo many others. An example of a brilliant show that just got axed after one season, which completely shocked me, even after knowing what sci-fi shows have to face and their chances of staying on TV, was ABC's The Crossing. I don't know if you heard of this show but it was awesome! Fortunately it knew it was getting canceled ahead of time and was able to give the show some sort of conclusion, but not the one it deserved. Really thought it would get at least a 2nd season but because ABC developed it they didn't have a chance. The network that has 2 bachelor type tv series on it with one of them having its 22nd season or something like that couldn't give a sci-fi show a second season should speak for itself.

totally agree about the 18-35 demo obsession leading a lack of sci-fi shows (and the ones that do have almost no budget usually) :( and I did watch the first five episodes of The Crossing I did one review for it . I figured it was going to get cancelled and I agree it was a good show it deserved more seasons I'm glad you say it ended things decent I plan to finish it

Your entitled to your opinion and I agreed with your explanations and review in the beginning but your notion that it started to not follow any kind of time travel rules, I think, isn't correct. I think they did have rules and continued to follow them, actually doing more so as the show went on. For some reason I don't think you understand what the Guardians were doing and that threw you off the show a little. Even though you seem to grasp time travel pretty well I don't see why you don't understand why they were killing themselves because it seems pretty simple to me. Once the good guys attempted to foil their plans the red head woman would go back in time, because that was part of her role as guardian, to warn her younger self of said threat in the future in order to avoid it happening at all. Once that message was delivered her younger self would alter her path thus causing a new timeline. Because of this, the future version had no timeline to return to, since the one she came from didn't exist anymore. With nowhere to return to, that would mean there were 2 versions of herself in the same place and time. Was she supposed to just remain with her younger self and the other guardians indefinitely? That would be pretty weird especially if another version appeared with another future warning. Multiplicity anyone, lol. Furthermore, when you go on to say that the good guys interacted with other versions of themselves, implying that they didn't follow the same rules as the guardians I feel isn't correct either. The guardians encountered themselves to change timelines while when Cole and them met their other selves they were completing their loops, or keeping their timeline intact, because they already did it. This is sort of an example of what you were calling self fulfilling prophecy. Since one version encountered itself before, the other one at some point would later have to once again meet themselves to keep their timeline intact. Sorry for the lengthy comment but I wanted to help you understand because it seems that because you didn't fully understand the reasoning behind the guardian woman killing herself it put you off the show a little when in fact it shouldn't have. I'm sure if you watched series 3 again with this understanding you might better enjoy the show and realize they've only been doing a better job as they went, not less of one.

"Because of this, the future version had no timeline to return to, since the one she came from didn't exist anymore. With nowhere to return to, that would mean there were 2 versions of herself in the same place and time" that is actually a great way to put it helps me understand it better, I guess the Guardian could just go live out their life somewhere but considering their only job is to protect the witness they probably wouldn't do that "when Cole and them met their other selves they were completing their loops, because they already did it." I guess I interpreted this completely differently, the Jennifer we follow on the show she never grows up and meets a younger version of herself as an old woman, the timeline changes and she grows up in a non-Apocalyptic version of the world so the times we see the younger and older versions meet I don't think those are loops at all they are just single occurrences (I Guess you could maybe say that they were loops until the massive timeline change in the finale and then the loop was broken?) I definitely will rewatch the show again though I think a rewatch would help a lot

I thought the show got better as it went on and highly disagree that it stopped making sense later. There were a few times when it violated its rules a bit, but these were only very minor occurrences. What it accomplished overall with its twists, was so satisfying in some cases, that it easily made up for it. I liked the film, but it was nowhere near as good as the series. Even if it was more consistent, it’s much easier for that to be the case with a film than a 40+ episode show. The show accomplished so much more overall and the film just felt like a starting off point.

exactly not, that is the reason why this show is fantastic, it had to come like it has come, there was no other way around it. the end showed why everything was set in stone. from the perspective of the individuals, they had no clue that no matter what they did, it is exactly that it had to be done to get to the point.

I also disagree with your problems with the show, it seems to me that you just got confused and and lost all idea of what the show's concept of time travel was, threw up your hands and said "ok..this show has lost me, but I still like the characters so I'll keep going!". lol. Just like Dark the entire show is a series of loops..but what makes it different is that within each loop is events that are fixed. They cannot be changed. Cassie was always going to die in the CDC...she was always meant to touch the artifact and get the strand of white in her hair. But within that is room where things can and will change. Within the show, it's shown time to be this force where, if something goes wrong..a character goes off a predestined path..where events are meant to happen, time will find a way of course correcting. For example: in one loop Ramse as Ethan Seki died in 2015, Cole went into obscurity, Cassie died in the CDC in 2017 and old Jennifer didn't take her daughters to titan...but because Ramse was alive, Cole saved him which caused them to destroy a virus strand in 2016 leading the virus breaking out a year later and Cassie also dying a year later. His interference caused everyone to take the fight to Titan and leading to their deaths..which Cole averted because of Lillian, a primary who like you said, came out of nowhere..because he was going off course..and the show has said again and again that Primaries "ARE time". So no..there was never a timeline where Athan was the witness or where Olivia wasn't The Witness..she always was..those are fixed events.
@JaysonWithaYChannel
@JaysonWithaYChannel 6 жыл бұрын
I guess that does tie in with the running theme of time being almost a conscious organism (which is pretty unique I haven't seen that explored before) hadn't considered Lillian as appearing to put things back on course I've always been curious about her role on the show that's a good explanation however young Jennifer (the one we follow on the show) has multiple conversations with older versions of herself, and she never grows up and then has those same conversations but this time in the older version role, therefore there are multiple different lifepaths for a single person
@drakenfist
@drakenfist 6 жыл бұрын
Yes she does, in the series finale after they stop the red forest, she goes into the time machine to go back in time and complete the loop..(Just like how Cassie goes back to die in the CDC). The entire series was building up Jennifer to become the natural leader that she could be for her people. Jennifer's life span ALWAYS has her dying on September 23rd 2044 by Deacon. The Jennifer we see in "Lullaby" the groundhog day episode..is the only "young Jennifer" at least to my knowledge that is the closest at this point to "our Jennifer". She is the one who helped them stop titan and everything and has all that knowledge (but in reality, old Jennifer is our Jennifer too..she experienced very small variations of the timeline from this go around, but as I said, it all happened pretty much as the same..Deacon shot and got slashed in the face. She looked for the scar, "see anything you like Granny" Jennifer: "not yet"). The whole thing really is basically like a telltale game lol..or those other "choose your own adventure" games (except for Detroit) where there is very small events that can be changed, but overall the destination is the same. All the big beats are the same. Or I guess the other game I would compare it to if you have played it..is Bioshock Infinite..I'm sure the writers are big fans of this game because it's concept of time travel and 12 Monkeys..were practically identical.."there are so many doors, but they all lead to the same place".
@gilgamesh310
@gilgamesh310 6 жыл бұрын
I highly disagree that Bioshock Infinite’s form of time travel is identical to that of 12 Monkeys. It’s based heavily around the multiverse. 12 Monkeys. Bioshock Infinite’s story is also a disaster that really makes no sense when analysed.

gilgamesh310 a man is sent on a mission (Booker/Cole). He meets a girl (Cassie/Elizabeth). He is being lead through time by beings with knowledge of how time and causality works (Lutece twins/the Primaries), as they make sure that he stays on the same path. The man finds out that he is on a loop where events keep happening, somethings change and others stay the same. When Booker/Cole changes the current loop, they have a nose bleed because their bodies have just merged with the Booker/Cole from that reality. The story ends with both finding out that they drove time insane by the choices they made and the only way to bring time back to normal is to erase themselves from existence. How does that not sound any different?.
@gilgamesh310
@gilgamesh310 6 жыл бұрын
The first thing you described could just as well apply to a heap of other stories, it’s such a bare bones description. The Lutec twins are nothing like the Primaries. Their purpose in the world isn’t even explained properly and doesn’t make much sense. It’s very clear what the primaries do and they serve a much stronger purpose in the story. The Luteces can only wish they were as awesome as Jennifer too. Bioshock Infinite doesn’t end with the main character finding he drove time insane. It’s more about his relation to Comstock. Having himself be killed doesn’t make much sense or accomplish much either. There’s the grandfather paradox which it doesn’t take into account. Leland Goines kind of mentions this in the first episode of 12 Monkeys to Cole before Cole kills him. It doesn’t change anything. In Bioshock Infinite, no legitimate changes should really occur by having the Elizabeth’s kill him. There’s an infinite series of universes in that as well, so all consequence is lost.

I think the show managed to maintain the suspension of disbelief pretty good and what I mean is that time travel is so confusing, and very few movies or series make any sense if you think about them, and I'm sure that if I nitpick the series I'll find some flaws, but it kept you watching and making you understand what's happening in a very believable way. Indeed criminally underrated, and Emily Hampshire's performance was amazing throughout the show

The reason the guardians destroyed themselves is because that changed time. We saw that when Cole heard the baby crying then was sent back. When the heroes went back, they were merely fulfilling what had already happened and kept causality in tact. I can't think of a moment where a hero went back in time and the experiences were different than what had already taken place. Where as finding the baby witness etc didn't happen at all when a guardian destroyed herself after giving the warning.

I only finished season 4 last night and I already miss the show. The funny thing is though I know absolutely no one who watches it. Actually scratch that, no one seems to know this show actually exists. It's criminally underrated and under-watched, and that's such a pity. I've watched all the big shows (and many littler ones) and maybe Ashes to Ashes, Breaking Bad, Six Feet Under and The Sopranos (yep) have finales as satisfying as 12 Monkeys' finale. It had everything I wanted from it, it was funny, moving, logically wrapped up all it's wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey plot strands and also (spoiler) managed to have a happy ending that a lesser show would not have earned. I think I would have been a little pissed off if another show had tried to pull off what they do in the final moments. I would have seen it as maudlin, overly-sentimental, and pandering to it's fan base, but I was never so happy to see a character come back from the dead (non-existence) because, as I said above, the show (and James and Cassie) really earned it. I tend to hold dear (and pretty close to my chest) shows/books/movies that I love that no one else knows, like my little personal secret, but with this show I'm ready to tell the world about. It was well worth the journey to get where we did and I look forward to watching it all again maybe in a year or so. Top stuff. Now go do the show a favour and tell everyone about it.

Well none too glaring anyway that can't be forgiven because (like 12M and its own "plot holes") they earned the right to be a little flexible at times. As for entertaining, it's a completely different type of show than 12M. Its tone and themes are definitely darker (but hey I'm sure you knew that from the title) but I was as entertained and engaged by it just as much as 12M. The show essentially depicts the scientific rationale behind fate or destiny in that they must carry out the loop as it has happened already so that they continue to exist as they do, I think it's the same as dark in that there is always a version of themselves ahead and a version behind, there is just so many interactions with multiple points of each persons timeline you can find yourself believing it's the first time it's happened but chances are a character that had already spoke to other characters from the future, just meant that the character it happened to always knew they were going to eventually go back and have that same interaction with their past self but chose to obscure it from others in their own timeline to preserve causality so that the events played out the right way. Essentially deacons story arc. I think the show was exceptional at explaining this. However the happy ending, which was obviously just to give the fans a non bittersweet glimpse of the heroes winning, is all a lie. Think of everything happening in 2013, everyone alive, brothers deacon bar where Jennifer drinks, her genetically engineering a unicorn as CEO of markridge even though Leland would have never been shot so wouldn't he still be CEO, Cole being alive and him and Cassie together in the house, no plague, all the Jones family with Hannah fully grown up with Katarina and Elliot not looking much older, Ramse meeting Sams mother and the chances of him ever existing anyway. It's too good to be true, time didn't just owe Cole one, it's the red forest, I think Cassie didn't stop the paradox at titan, the world turning blue wasn't it being reversed but actually someone's perfect world and moment being created. The moment being 2013 with different moments from time happening all at once. The show has a way of throwing us red herrings and I think that's one of them. Happily forever after. May just be my opinion but as they say, "the right ending, is the one you choose".

interesting comment, i found the whole CEO leland thing most interesting. Anyway as for the red forrest creating a persons perfect moment, there are 2 things that are supposed to happen, firstly its supposed to do exactly what it says on the tin (Forrest becomes red) and what we've seen happen in the series when the paradoxes and time travel stuff is effecting time (turning plants and stuff to red), and the other thing its supposed to do is create the persons perfect moment to re-live over and over again WITHOUT time being a concept, meaning no days going by again and again or doing work then coming home etc. Cassies perfect moment would'nt involve desperately waiting around for cole in the ceder house and being rejected by the emerson hotel staff. Also the mistake she made was using cole's real name when asking for him there, we see when cole first finds out about the emmerson and rents out a room alongside jenny with him (who claims it was'nt HIS first time there, even though it was himself's current self's first time there) the name they give is morris morrison, or something fake and goofy lol, i know for sure it was'nt his real name. he ends up getting a room next door in like 609 i believe because 607 is being watched at the time. Anyway also the clerk told cassie they stopped selling out rooms as a perminant residence since the 1940's, but did'nt cole buy the room sometime in the 1930s? i did at first kind of believe that cole was dead or having his red forrest moment when waking up washed up on the shore, it felt too good to be true lol. i think all timelines are continually running at the same time, it feels like nothing got erased but rather prevented instead. But then... how did cole appear washed up on the shore if his past was in the future as a scavenger with ramsees? ramsees was also a scavenger at the time so him being in the past with a child already born makes no sense, unless their former selves (cole in kid form left at the orphanage place WITH kid ramsees) also exist in the same timeline. This can cause a paradox intentionally if they ever decided to come in contact with eachother. This part we know is speculation. BUT we do know old jenny in the bar with deacon exists in the same timeline as young jenny on tv, meaning they can come in contact with eachother and cause a paradox. As for the perfect moments thing, everyone appears to be living a happy life, but the red forrest only gives a person a perfect moment in their own head, or a persons own perfect moment rather than everyone having their own perfect moment at the same time and be able to interact with eachother. IF the red forrest did happen, then we woulda seen the doc from back to the future (the tall man's dad/botonists dad) having his perfect moment playing that kids game toy things with his wife, AND the tall man spending time with his dad, as moments before he seen his dad get shot in the past by the hg wells detective guy the dad says to him "see you again when the forrest is red" or "see you later in the red forrest" or something before provoking his own death. Olivia's perfect moment was probebly the idea of being the withness, that being her goal and moment of perfectness that she was hoping to achieve as her main goal, having her body blasted from 2043 all the way back to year 800 or 900 and something probebly her death moments after such a long jump in time had caused her spirit spirit to become timeless,and thus the withness in spirit, but a dead virus body in the flesh. or maybe not, that last part about olivia i just pulled outta my asss last minute, but it could be something. a small bit of speculation i wonder about. Everything is put in place to happen again, back to where it was origenally, except for cole and ramsees and future jenny

The 2 Jennys are not existing together. They show the Jenny in Cassie's timeline as the CEO who found a unicorn. The other Jenny in the bar was Deacon's timeline-not 2013. They did not show everyone existed in the same year but they were living happily in their own timelines. Katarina and Deacon were maybe in 2043. Ramse too was at 2043. Its either that or its Cole's red forest where everyone is happy.

I like your theory, and the red leaf at the end definitely left enough ambiguity that everything after the sky turned blue was taking place in the red forest - but I think there's a lot in that final episode which goes against that, personally. The flashes we see during Cassie's monologue all take place at different points in time - the Deacon brothers for instance has a decidedly older looking Jennifer at the bar, so probably took place sometime in the late 2030s. Same with Adler and Laskey playing chess, as they look to be a similar age as they were in 2043. As for the Jennifer being CEO stuff - I personally took that to mean that Cole not driving time itself mad with time travel means that while she's still connected to time as a Primary, Jen's in a far better place mentally - so probably took over the company after her father retired. The Army of the 12 Monkeys not killing her co-workers and her head not being full of the code to wipe Cole from time probably helped there. Either that, or she got the help she needed when the Doctors she was being looked after weren't being paid by the Army of 12 Monkeys (which is the other explanation). That was my interpretation anyway - but as you say, the right ending is the one you choose.

For 'me' the whole idea towards the end was that time wasnt to be bothered with and the whole goal of the primary's was to end the cycle. Doing so travel would have never been possible if James Cole would have never existed. His existence was the cause of time travel, once completely erased from time. Cole survival was due to the one that was sent through the last portal was the last version of himself, so because his atom was thrown to somewhere in time and of his other existence never took place. His atom was not erased but his life was not killed because his final jump atom was still intact. For him to never have been born and since his life never existed gave him a type of "individual" atom if i could say. So his life was sent to the new reality where none of the whole story took place. So the whole mission was to save james cole. Crazy but an amazing show. Which because james survived gave jennifer somehow the power of the primary where she still knew of all the events that took place. The show was just outstanding, a bit confusing but the show was extraordinary

You're forgetting about different timeliness / parallel universes. If someone meets an older version of themselves and then later travels back in time to meet themselves then lives their life and dies. They don't repeat that. That's the end of their life.

One thing that made no sense to me was that Cole and Cassie were in 1957 for basically a year. Then when they splintered back after undoing the paradox, Ramse and co still hadn't got to Titan yet. We know that Cole and co didn't time travel to go save them they just travelled in space so are they really trying to tell us that Ramse, Jennifer and the daughters travelled on foot for a year? What also makes no sense is in this new timeline where the paradox never happened, surely Ramse wouldn't have had to have walked there. There would now be no reason why he couldn't have used the machine as there was no fight to go stop the paradox as it now never happened. So when Cole and Cassie returned it should've been to a timeline where Ramse and the rest died a year ago after having splintered to Titan.

I've been watching the show from the beginning. Yet I wasn't particularly looking forward to this season. I had kind of even forgotten about the show. I really didn't even remember much of what happened last season. Yet this whole season was nothing short of spectacular. Almost every episode was brilliant. And I don't think I'm overstating it when I say that the series finale was perhaps the best series finale I've ever seen. I really do think it was that good. Great video by the way. I think the self destruct thing was meant as a means to erase a version of someone who came back to change the timeline. The s3 the woman who makes sure cassie is safe, the version of her that goes back to warn them shouldnt have been able to come back and warn herself. She goes through time as if she was never warned to go back and warn herself. Causing her old self to not have existed to come back. I feel the self destruct was the scape goat. When the main gang travel they are careful in their words to help keep causality intact. The messengers who travel back to themselves to change time dont do that.

in short youre saying the splinter group warning or meeting younger selves was needed to continue story were as the army of 12 monkeys or guardian/ messangers (whoever they were that self destructed) were not needed so where they went back in time had to be ignored or erased from story except olivia and tall man , hence self destruct as would make story to complicated as it was about the splinter group ie different treatments or story wouldnt work ?

The plague came from olivias body that was found in the past due to her being splinterd to 8 hundred and something. So the plague never happened and the future was not effected by it.

@@malcolmfreeman1330 Olivia is acting from a flawed timeline. When Olivia is the witness she see's a lot of the moving pieces and to her it all leads to the red forest being activated. Not realizing that all her actions are leading to her demise. Whereas Cole and Cassie realized that they were the ones who spread the virus in the first place to maintain the loop. If they didn't do it, then it breaks the loop, since the creation of the time machine came about from Jones trying to stop the virus in the first place. In short, Olivia was working to protect her so called future. Whereas Cole and Cassie are trying to make sure that certain events happen as not to disrupt the timeline.

For the 12 monkeys (1996 film) The time travel logic seems not make sense in the scripts.... As Cole was killed at Airport in 1996, how can Cole survive in year 2035 and being sent back from 2035 to 1990 and 1996 respectively? Anyway I like the "revise concept" about all future actions fixing the history.

James Cole is what came first. The primaries are VERY clear, and the ending of the series confirms this. The source of all causality in the series IS James Cole, and erasing him from time causes the army of the 12 monkeys, the Witness, and even time travel itself not to exist. Furthermore, there is a direct time loop in the series, when the older James Cole uses that time travel vest to save the younger version of himself from trying to get Cassie out of Titan after giving birth to Athan. So yeah... I think you could have structured your argument better. Oh, just because we don't SEE the youngest Jennifer Goines have that conversation as her older self, and we don't see the main Jennifer Goines get older and have that conversation with herself when she dies does NOT mean it doesn't happen. It does. In fact, again, in the season finale, when they send everyone back, Jones specifically says that they have to send everyone back 'to preserve what little of causality that we can'. The only exception is after they push the plague back a couple years at the end of Season 1, reason being that Jones has to 'investigate our own investigation'. This means that the conversation SHE has with her younger self IS a conversation with a different version of herself, but this is the only example of this argument that is valid.

But if the Sears knew all this was going to happen why didnt they just leave a message to kill Katerina Jones the scientist who invents time travel , that allowed Cole to be the first successful time traveller that starts the loop . Then she wouldnt have invented time travel and time would have gone on in a straight line . Made a boring short 5 minute movie though with bad ending (plague wiped out 7 billion). or would it ?

GOOD VIDEO! i just finished watching the entirety of all the 12 monkeys series's for the second time. as for the red forrest creating a persons perfect moment, there are 2 things that are supposed to happen, firstly its supposed to do exactly what it says on the tin (Forrest becomes red) and what we've seen happen in the series when the paradoxes and time travel stuff is effecting time (turning plants and stuff to red), and the other thing its supposed to do is create the persons perfect moment to re-live over and over again WITHOUT time being a concept, meaning no days going by again and again or doing work then coming home etc. Also the clerk told cassie they stopped selling out rooms as a perminant residence since the 1940's, but did'nt cole buy the room sometime in the 1930s? probebly 1944 if i'm not mistaken i did at first kind of believe that cole was dead or having his red forrest moment when waking up washed up on the shore, it felt too good to be true lol. i think all timelines are continually running at the same time, it feels like nothing got erased but rather prevented instead. But then... how did cole appear washed up on the shore if his past was in the future as a scavenger with ramsees? ramsees was also a scavenger at the time so him being in the past with a child already born makes no sense, unless their former selves (cole in kid form left at the orphanage place WITH kid ramsees) also exist in the same timeline. This can cause a paradox intentionally if they ever decided to come in contact with eachother. This part we know is speculation. BUT we do know old jenny in the bar with deacon exists in the same timeline as young jenny on tv, meaning they can come in contact with eachother and cause a paradox. At the end everyone appears to be living a happy life, but the red forrest only gives a person a perfect moment in their own head, or a persons own perfect moment rather than everyone having their own perfect moment at the same time and be able to interact with eachother.

Which was named after the writers of the movie, David and Janet Peoples (they also wrote the script for Blade Runner, based off of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep). Not to mention, they used the theme song from the Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys "Suite Punta Del Este", originally composed Astor Paziolla in the Season Two episode "Hyena".
