Something New: • Anomaly - A Short Cosm...
A time traveling agent hunkered down in the 1930s is tasked with the assassination of a young boy in the year 1994 to prevent future tragedy, but soon finds out there is more to the story than what he's been told.
Our latest short film here at TheBrothersGrymm Productions. This was a whole lot of fun to make, definitely our highest concept, longest film, and over all the biggest task we've undertaken, so far. There were many moments that slowed us down, like not being able to do reshoots or bad audio, but over all nothing was able to stop us. Engineering some audio sequences from scratch and reshooting pieces of scenes in different locations whilst blending it best we could proved a challenging task, but overall I believe this turned out to be the best film we have done yet.
We hope you enjoy, like and share if you did!

I liked this. It's a good example for filmmakers who don't understand that story is more important than effects or budget. I've watched so many short sci-fi films with much larger budgets that I've thumb-downed because the story was basically non-existent. Even familiar stories, like the one in this piece, can be emotionally engaging when given a fresh take and a satisfying ending.

Very good indeed! It kept me wondering, and I anticipated something of the end only during the fight ('so that's what a drifter is'), and our cold-blooded assassin turned out to be a Joe Friday hero with just the right amount of confidence to balance the danger he was in. Very satisfying ending. Thank you for making this.

Nice plot, interesting concept... but what self-respecting (and succesful) assassin (a) turns on lights, (b) waits until inside the targets home to put the supresor on his pistol, (c) goes THUNK THUNK THUNK up the stairs, and (d) talks out loud to his handler in the upstairs hall???

I thought this short was way too slow. Taking your time in a scene with anticipation creates suspense. However, if you don't have anticipation, you don't have suspense. My advice is to take only as long as you need to tell the story, but don't stretch it out just to fill time.

Love this film. I love the "room" that he lives in. I quickly came to the assumption that the newspapers on the wall were events that he played a part in. From the first two minutes to the closing scene I was hooked. Questions were answered, yet more questions were asked and it makes me want to know and see more. Now the mass shooting hasn't happened, what do the people that were spared do? How did that affect the future? Why did the drifter want the shooting to happen? How did he know that it would happen if the parents were killed? So much to need answers for. Great work!

If you are confused, here is the gist of it. In the original time line, Barry the kid, grew up and committed the mass shooting. Killing Barry when he was a child before the crime would be brutal but logically would prevent the mass shooting from happening. However, the story asks what caused Barry to be the mass shooter in the first place. It turned out that Barry's parents' murders were the cause of his committing the mass shooting. By preventing Barry's parents from being murdered gave Barry a chance to grow up not being homicidal. Its a nice story and a social commentary of our justice system. We tend to punish criminals after the crimes have been committed. We should focus on prevention instead. All criminals were innocent children once. They don't get into crimes on their own. Somewhere in their lives something went wrong that started them on the wrong path. Not all criminals must have violent and traumatic childhood experiences. White collar criminals growing up in luxury and privilege commit crimes later in their lives because ironically they were spoiled by their circumstance. A lack of sympathy can be brought upon by tragedy that caused anger or it can caused by not having to experienced the plight of being poor. It's the infamous affluenza defense.
@justmyusername9209
@justmyusername9209 4 жыл бұрын
You missed something important. Barry didn't commit the mass shooting in the first timeline. There are 3 timelines.The Drifter was there to kill the parents. He was meddling in the timeline as mentioned at 10:42 . This implies that in the original timeline his parents weren't killed and Barry didn't become a killer. It was only because the Drifter had meddled and killed them (creating the 2nd timeline in which Barry becomes a killer) - that the Jumper was sent to kill him. At first the time agency and the Jumper were not aware that the timeline had been meddled with - but he was warned before he "jumped" in the letter to "watch out for Drifters". Luckily he had the realization that "people aren't born bad" and then discovers that Barry's parents were going to be murdered that night and realizes that that was the even that turned Barry evil. He reports to the time agency that he thinks someone is trying to kill the parents - it seems he is suspecting a drifter already. Once he deals with the drifter we are left with a third timeline where the parents boys are not murdered because the Jumper dealt with the Drifter. This in affect restores the original timeline's future with Barry not being a killer again, though it technically is a third timeline. Agree with the implications of the social commentary stuff you wrote though - all those implications still stand.
@ronagoodwell2709

So, what are we to make of this? Timeline is changed by not changing the timeline. Getting rid of the drifter seemed to do the trick. I'll have to remember that on future assignments. Also: get quieter shoes. Also: install suppressor before going into house. Also: collect more background intel before going in thereby removing need to talk to the handler right in the middle of an op. Also: get a real gun. Also: don't leave evidence laying around on the table. Also: check for bullet holes and slugs in walls before packing up. Okay. End communication.

Kid sleeps through strange people in the room... possible, but where are the parents - I always wake up from strange noises in the house. I would suggest a device that puts the parents in a deep sleep state that he can zap from outside... possibly? Something that makes the fact they don't wake up more believable. Otherwise the timeline plot was very good. More info on "drifters" would be good.

I believe the drifter was the kid at the end. He went back to kill his family to secure his own future. The agent left the earpiece there for the kid to find and have when he's older. Although this is a paradox as it means the same earpiece is going through time and is both past and future versions of itself. Maybe the kid uses it to find another which becomes the past version of the one on the table.
