Part of this brought me to say this, I'm a giver I never felt good getting from people, givers are givers, so really just recently and I will be 65 yrs old I'm learning to allow people to give in their way of saying thank you...and I'm not rich in any way far from it, but I just always felt good being a giver than a taker...and there are plenty of takers...and till today I always like the feeling I leave people that I don't want anything for my kindness absolutely nothing....otherwise its not kindness its hey what can I get for what I do for them....great sit down enjoyed it once again...

I agree with both of you, sometimes it may be a life or death situation and the only way to get out of it or to save someone else might be by lying. But most everyday cases aren't like that and from what you mentioned, I believe Jordan was addressing the issue that everyone lies or has lied in the past for personal gain and the moment this easy way out works for us, we all end up resorting to it until we eventually learn our lesson (although many never do).

As a woman once told me. You can trust a thief but you can never trust a liar. If you work in an environment were your life is dependent on other people and vise versa. Lying is a no no.

Although I'm a huge Jordan Peterson fan I think have disagreements and discuss things can be very beneficial! Two things about the 'never lie' thing: • if you lie to Protect someone, how are you certain to help them with it? • the truth is all you have. Not lying protects your spirit in difficult times. • a third thing although I was going to say just two things; Socrates would've lived if he just lied. For me it's not clear why he didn't make the wisest decision of them all by telling his truth.

I believing in lying to protect those you love. For sure. Why put someone in harms way that you care about? If one is caught in a lie and it's for good reason it would be for good reason and completely understandable. People who say they would tell the truth I don't think has ever been in a situation where a loved one was put in harms way.

It is a great book. I also agree with the both of you about lying. Sometimes you have to pick and choose when to lie. Example; WW-2, if I was hiding you in the attic and the Nazis were looking for you. I would have no problem telling them I don’t know where you are.

The only time I can think of where lying seems fully acceptable would be if your wife or girlfriend asks you how she looks in a particular outfit and you may not personally think it looks the best on her, however it’s clear SHE really likes the way she looks in it and wants to wear it, I just can’t see any reason to tell the truth here other than just that: to tell the truth, but I see zero positive outcome from this and also zero negative outcome from lying in this scenario. I watched the Franzese/Peterson sit down and I recall Michael bringing up the point about his son getting in trouble, and the main thing I remember Jordan pointing out is that, even if it seems you’re only protecting your son and it’s harmless, there was probably a string of lies leading up to that one, and as both Michael and Chazz pointed out here, once you’ve told the lie it can turn into a web of deceit where you have to continue to lie to cover up the previous lie(s). Would be an interesting subject to hear these three gentlemen discuss.

As for myself its very difficult for me to get the Chicago Illinois mindset Out of my psyche I find myself still living with the same Live rules as if you will as I did in the inner city no matter where I live I think it depends upon What the lie is and the consequence of telling the falsehood You've been telling the truth it costs a man's life Who is say what would be the greater wrong Something to ponder.I believe that even though we most do are best to be Truthful there are Exceptions to the rule

All of you's are right. Under ordinary circumstances, Mr. Peterson is correct: A lie is a lie is a lie. However, what the two of you's are talking about is commonly referred to as a "life boat scenario." In such a scenario, all ordinary principles take a back seat. When it's a matter of a life, a whole new set of emergency principles are at play.
