One thing that unlocked my shot variability was understanding that "wide" doesn't always mean "wide lens", and that each shot intentionally has a specific part in the story, in the way it is captured can tell the story completely different than another.
@Alexzarfatifilms
@Alexzarfatifilms Ай бұрын
That’s actually really true I didn’t mention that but I have found I like using 50mm for my wide shots and it really gives it a great look. Intention is definitely everything your spot on about that.

Great video, super informative and i feel like i could reflect on alot of those shot in different films ive seen and recall why they showed up at that point in the narrative. One question i do have is about the close ups, why are they typically done at around 80mm as you said? My guess is that zooms can have a more flattering effect on the intimate features on body or face. Thanks for great content!

Just watch Kurosawa! He's the best at moving the camera and the subject within the frame. I understand that people just want to study modern directors, but modern filmmaking is mostly lazy, and Kurosawa still, 7 decades later, stands at the top! Thank goodness Roger Deakins exists in this era and others, obviously.

In my eyes, all shots should have a reason to exist and should most often be long shots. Long shots helps the audience connect the characters with the setting and allows us to feel like a real person watching these characters. I don’t enjoy constant use of rack focus, over the shoulder shots because it takes us out of reality, holding us at gun point to pay attention only to what the characters are discussing. Sometimes it is effective, but a simple LS or FS with a group of characters talking (in one shot) just feels more satisfying to look at.

@@Alexzarfatifilms That's what I'm saying too... If we wanted free info we could just google it. As you are a professional filmmaker, we want some nuanced information from people like you. KZfaq filmmaking space has become like just 'Jingling keys in front of a baby' lately. Please don't make the bare minimum generalized content in order to shove a sponsorship somewhere in between... Or I'm just stupid to expect anything more from you not realising that that's what everyone's aiming to do nowadays.
