Even though you research, you don't always grasp all parts of a curriculum and such was the case with THE GOOD and the BEAUTIFUL HIGH SCHOOL LANGUAGE ARTS when we purchased this for my 9th grader:
When you purchase new homeschool curriculum, you may have an IDEA of how its supposed to work, but the reality is many times, you just have to dig in and see for yourself. When I purchased The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts for High School, I had a little knowledge because my sister in law had used it for her high schooler the previous year. Apparently, I didn't ask enough questions! But that's life...you live and you learn!
So I'm going to share with you 12 things that I think would be helpful to know and understand if you are brand new to this TGATB high school course....or even if this is your 1st year using it!
This video is a collaboration with Colleen from "OUR BLESSED LIFE" I reached out to Colleen because she had experience with IEW, Lost Tools of Writing, and also The Good and the Beautiful high school language arts. Knowing what she knows now....having a senior high school homeschooler, would she do anything different with her language arts choices? Check out her video here:

I always had Katie turn in a rough draft and I would give her things to correct without actually correcting it so she had to think through it. So I would say, "your grammar needs work", without telling her exactly what to fix. She was able to take it from there. We also continued using the LTW stand IEW skills. They help so much!

My dream is to get to the point where I can say, “your grammar needs work!” 😂 We aren’t there yet. But it’s slowly improving, which is WHY I had to add in the IEW checklist, specifically. The reminders there are invaluable until it becomes habit.

Nice, but for my son that would not be 'teaching' That would actually be one of the reasons that we took him out of public school. When I find mistakes in my son's work I explain it to him in detail ... so that he understands clearly - this is how he has improved so quickly and is a year or 2 ahead of the neighborhood kids here. I saw that in the online public school during the pandemic, the teachers would opt out of teaching and just presented the work and assigned an assignment, then graded it and moved on. I would stop to ask the teacher in a parent / teacher email and got little to know info. If that is what we were getting for our tax dollars, then it was NOT good enough for our son. My son was typically the youngest in the class and always near the top of the class. He was in AP classes. He is happier and knows that he can learn more at home because his questions are not ignored anymore. Teachers in Pub schools don't have enough time for all the questions and everything else they are required to do.

@@MYfriendsknow I did the same when necessary. Generally though, my daughter made careless mistakes and was able to correct them on her own with just a little guidance. If she truly didn’t know, then of course that becomes a teachable moment. Part of the beauty of homeschooling is that you know what they know.

We just finished the HS year 1 curriculum. She liked one of the books, but the rest were just ok. She prefers fantasy. She really enjoyed Patterns on the Wall. I’m loving the grammar work in TGTB language arts!!! I’m planning on using the high school levels when we get there but unsure. The answer pdf in the email I doubt I would find on my own. We actually used level 6 TGATB LA for 8th grade, due to gaps coming out of public school. We are using level 7 now for 9th , which is considered advanced 8th grade or regular 9th grade per TGATB website! WE LOVE IT!! So much important information and the accompanying course companion is awesome!! So much more comprehensive than level 6. We’ll be finished by December and will either do book studies or begin TGATB HS year 1! We will add novels and book studies every year!! Thanks that was so thorough! I have all 3 levels but you mentioned a couple of things I hadn’t thought of. I used level 1 for my son last year and we had mixed feelings. This year I’m mixing up levels two and three as they go with our world history curriculum. So we’re using the Middle Ages and Shakespeare sections, for example, and we’re going to save anything American for next year when we do government for history so we can do an American lit credit. We aren’t using most of the lit that comes with it. I’m doing other books that go along with our history. For the issue you mentioned with the tiny print, what I do is I don’t print it. I correct it using the computer, and on the computer screen you can easily adjust the print size.

The computer screen is a good idea. I just get weary of screens. I’m a paper girl! (Hence my paper planner videos! 😜) I don’t know if would’ve ever thought of buying two levels and mixing them!! Do you think the other years are very different than year 1 in terms of the overall “structure” and projects of the curriculum? (I don’t know if that makes sense) like spelling dictation on both? PowerPoint presentation?

You're right that it can be confusing to figure out where the answer key is! Love this collaboration idea and video! One of the reasons we put the 10th grader on TGTB Language Arts is because she has very solid grammar skills as far as the nitty gritty of word choice, punctuation, capitalization, etc. (mainly from Abeka) and she is naturally good at organizing and putting together compositions (I don't really think she learned that from anywhere in particular)--Abeka pretty much does the exact same thing for all 4 years of high school, so we just had her do one year, she learned it, and then moved onto something a little more 'fun' for her. For us, she does it 100% independently, and just asks questions whenever she has something she's not sure about, and goes over her writing assignments when she's done with mom or me once she has a solid draft (and I am also the pick it apart type. lol! My mom is not as tough as I am on writing...) You're reminding me that my mom wants me to print out unit 8 for her...when we finish it I'll probably make a video reviewing my thoughts on its strengths and weaknesses.
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 жыл бұрын
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses. I do love that they still drill the grammar. But what we’re struggling with, is definitely the application into the papers. It’s not necessarily punctuation, although commas with the quotes….😕 but more like subject verb agreement on more complex sentences…or like when listing items in the the same noun form or verb tense. Just as an example. But like you and I know….we pick those papers apart and hopefully our editing reviews will stick someday. I remember my dad picking apart my paper and being frustrated. But I also remember after awhile, adopting some of the style that he ALWAYS added. (I can remember editing papers when I was in high school, but don’t ask me what I did yesterday!! Lol! 😜😜😜) So Abeka is kind of the same throughout all 4 years of high school? Is that what you’re saying? I have some friends who think Abeka is the end all be all. And others with experience with Abeka who can’t/couldn’t wait to break away from it. (It’s the only curriculum used in one of the Christian schools here). I guess my impression of it for high school is that it never moves onto to more critical thinking and analyzing. It stays in the “grammar” stage, which can be frustrating for teens who are ready to be “dialectic.” (Those are classical education terms. Grammar meaning learning facts, dates, definitions… dialectic meaning questioning and reasoning, debate, and see how facts etc relate to one other, even across “subjects”)
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 2 жыл бұрын
@@OurHOMEschoolPlan Yes, I would say that your impression of Abeka is correct. It's excellent at the nitty gritty of grammar...but it never really moves on into nuances of strong argument, persuasive writing. Grammar + Composition (their big workbook) pretty much goes over the same points again and again through all 4 years, maybe the sentences to diagram and analyze get trickier as you go. It teaches everything that gets tested on the SAT/ACT English portions (I always say I credit Abeka with my perfect scores)....but it doesn't really get to the heart and soul of writing.

@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 жыл бұрын
I feel you about the time rushing by!!!! 🥲 Let me give some thought because I’m trained in IEW and honestly it helped ME PERSONALLY with my own grammar. IEW does have a program that you could easily incorporate now called, “Fix It Grammar”. It’s about 15 minutes a day. You could do that together with your child if it’s general grammar you struggle with. Or, you could look at IEW for the basics of writing a paper. Im adding IEW into my 6th graders coursework now bc it’s sooo good at teaching a process and making that process attainable for any learner, IMO. TGTB does teach some of these grammar elements and some on the style. I just feel like the “process” isn’t as straight forward as IEW. So I think IEW is a solid foundation to have for ANY writing going forward. That’s my suggestion. But maybe Colleen has other ideas. I’ll ask her.

We're in Unit 3 right now with my 9th grader. Honestly, I didn't give the grading any thought when it came to just a completion grade. I check his work EVERY DAY though, so he is working WITH me and correcting his work as we go. IMO, they aren't going to just jump into independence their first high school year. I work towards that, but I don't mind partnering with him on key core subjects to make sure he is understanding. I also use Homeschool Planet as my homeschool planner, and I schedule one unit at a time for him. So he gets a checklist of assignments every day. I will let him start navigating how to break down assignments maybe next year bc I wanted him to get familiar with it first before I just hand him a unit book. Otherwise, he would get way too overwhelmed. --- We do geography as an added bonus (I don't count it on his transcript), but we don't do any art assignments in the back of the unit.

I have a son who started out using TGTB Year 1 this year. We dropped it after 3.5 units because he wanted a more rigorous literature plan, he didn't like stretching a thin novel over several units. He was frustrated with the unit checks requiring him to write about the same book repeatedly. I also wish that TGTB separated out the art and geography. Generally, we don't care for programs that incorporate several subjects. I'm sure that is just our personal quirk. If TGTB sold a separate art history program I would purchase it in a heartbeat. I also wish that there was a better teacher manual and a syllabus/course schedule. We have a CC background too. We use Janice Campbell's Excellence In Literature; and love it.

I bet a lot of people would buy that. They do such a WONDERFUL job with the art instruction and incorporating the history in. It is probably the thing that made me even look at TGTB in the first place!

@@OurHOMEschoolPlan Excellence In Literature has 10 modules per year, but the author is clear that you can choose the number of modules to complete. Generally there is one book per module with 1-2 honors books that are optional. What I love about EIL is the online context resources on her website. There is poetry, historical context, period music and art, as well as context material about the author. Grammar/spelling/vocabulary are not included like with TGTB; but the author recommends using a good writing and style handbook; she has one available that is extremely thorough and she even recommends a few others on her site as well. We pull vocabulary from the novels (you can easily google vocabulary lists from each novel if your student isn't able to pinpoint words to learn).. I also like that EIL incorporates an American, British, and World Literature year into the curriculum. That is something that you need to piece together with TGTB (although as Colleen did with Katie it can be done through online literature lists for high school).

The Level 7 FAQs asks: Can I count Level 7 as high school credit? A: The instruction in Level 7 is comparable to 9th grade work. My question is: Would it be okay to give a 9th grader Level 7 plus the Book Studies (level 8), then Y1 in 10th and so on? Would that be sufficient?

love this video!!! I will not have my son do any art. Art appreciation is OK - but not something he hates doing. He studies music and sports and foreign language on top of all the core learning classes. We combine call our Bible class "Bible / Ethics" I don't weigh down my son on anything. I do NOT want him to learn to hate learning; I want him to enjoy learning. Just like I do not want him to hate cooking; I want him to find joy in as much of life as he can, even in the mundane - you can have joy in your heart. ** Actual learning vs just saying you completed a book. THIS IS ONE REASON THERE ARE LEARNING GAPS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS. It is more important that they learned what they studied, and not that they just got through a book. Whose homeschool is it - The company you happened to buy the book from or YOURS? Whose kid is it - who KNOWS that kid better; who loves that child! Even in college, they do not go through every assignment / chapter of a textbook!

The average student will need to spend 45-60 minutes a day + time spent on the High School 1 Reading Challenge for a 4-day school week (determined by the student and teacher, usually an average of 15-20 minutes a day) 35-50 minutes a day + time spent on the High School 1 Reading Challenge for a 5-day school week (determined by the student and teacher, usually an average of 10-15 minutes a day) Advanced students should be able to finish the course in less than one school year by spending the times listed above. However, students that are slower but still want to complete Honors Units Studies can simply spend more time each day. Average advanced students that spend the maximum time listed above are expected to finish High School 1 in 1/2 a school year. First of all, I’m humbled that you think so highly of my opinion! 🥰 and that’s all this is. I think that if you wanted to get the IEW student style and structure with the videos, and you watched them with your child, YOU would learn a ton! BUT- If you didn’t want your child to have to learn from the video along with you, and you wanted to learn WITH them…. You could get the TEACHING style & structure and a themed unit to do with your child. Here’s how that work. The TEACHING style and structure would teach you the concept so that you could relay it to your child and be able to help him. Let’s say you get the themed unit, “All Things Fun & Fascinating”. You’d follow that book….you’d already understand the concept, so working through the teacher portion would be much easier for you to understand. Then that themed unit Teachers manual would ALSO guide you in how to teach your child the grammar element that they will be adding into their paper….like adverbs, like different openers. This grammar elements aren’t really addressed in the TEACHING style & structure. That program sticks to the structure of writing only. I hope that makes sense. Please let me know if doesn’t, but also….hint, hint….I’m going to be doing an IEW video at some point bc I just ordered my materials. And I am going to be teaching my younger two from themed units bc my middle child also doesn’t do well with the video teaching. :) I’m. It sure how quickly that video will come out and when you want to decide….but that video IS coming. If you want to know more details about the themed units….this video is where I explained better about how those work. You are obviously well versed in this curriculum and I feel like you have children who are relatable to my own. I also greatly respect your Biblical view and appreciate your wise teaching (I watched a few of your other videos and they ministered to my heart). 😊 So, if I understand you correctly, Teaching Style & Structure is just that- how to write for each structure given (like a letter). And themed units teach them grammar concepts and how to use them within the writing? Do the video lessons do all of this for me? I feel like I may need to do video lessons along side of her, in addition to having a teacher’s manual. In using BJU press English, it was very good for having the grammar concepts and teacher notes when I needed them. I bought EIW to help with writing but it’s taking forever and I feel at a loss sometimes when I don’t have a teacher’s manual to look back on, when needed. I need something that will teach the concept, like this is an adverb and this is how to use it in a sentence and now you’re going practice this as well as observe it within we’ll written literature. I feel like other programs just cram all these terms and sentence diagraming down their throats and then expect them to remember it and know how to write a well developed paragraph including everything all at once. 😣 I’m also having my child tested for dyslexia this year. So I will be waiting to order anything until after that testing is completed. Thank you, again for all of your Godly wisdom and insight. 🥰

@@ambers4524 you are so kind! I’m happy to be able to share truth and thankful that the Lord can use me to encourage you. 😉 ok now that you’re asking these questions about the videos, I’m not sure. It’s been awhile since I’ve watched them (I need to rewatch and see bc I DO remember him teaching (for example) the -ing opener. For example, “Sitting, the young child ate his dinner.” I remember Andrew Pudewa saying, “the thing following the -ing should be the thing doing the -ing.” 😉 and that’s on TEACHING style & structure. So maybe he does also teach all the grammar elements. So the themed units reiterate the writing structure that TEACHING style and structure teaches. You’ll get the same teaching in both. You’ll just get more details from Andrew Pudewa on the why and how to teach it to your students. You could watch those videos with your child also. Even though the audience is teachers, your child might enjoy the video instruction with you. 😉 But I will say the teachers manual for the themed unit is also VERY good and very clear. That’s the thing about IEW and why it’s so popular. It starts easy. And it just adds one element every lesson. So you’re constantly practicing all the things you’ve learned. Paper 1, you write using element “A.” Paper 2, you’re using “A & B.” Paper 3, you add on “C,” so you use “ABC.” And you just an element every new lesson. Does that make sense? That’s why it’s so effective. And then the checklists remind you to check in your paper, all the elements you’re trying to use. And if you missed one, add it. And then check it off! The student style and structure and videos will teach it all. And you could definitely do that alongside your child. And then just help her through the assignments. Andrew Pudewa is an excellent teacher. Have you tried the free trial? It will give you and idea of what it’s like. I’m not sure if there’s a sample of the teaching style and structure videos. I hope that all made sense. 😉

Would you say a child that has never used TGTB , that also aren't good writers begin with US level 1? Or in Level 7.
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 жыл бұрын
We never did level 7. But if I had to do it over again…now knowing that level 7 can count as high school, I might have started there. HAVING SAID THAT…. They say that in high school, they repeat all of the concepts learned in previous levels, just at a faster pace. So they say you can start there with no precious experience. The helping videos are very helpful, indeed!! You could always just take extra time for the papers and work through that process more closely with your child. So I guess my answer is, you could do either. 🤷‍♀️ if I were you, I’d look on their website and do my best to research level 7 and see what’s in it. The reason I might have considered this for 9th grade is knowing that TGTB only has 3 years of HS anyway. So adding level 7 means you can do 4 years. But like I also said….IEW is EXCELLENT for teaching the basics of writing and would do an excellent job in just 1 year. It’s very systematic and straightforward in how it teaches. But I think it would be too much to add together with TGTB. I might have been able to add IEW with TGTB level 6 though and skipped some of TGTB writing assignments. So maybe that combo could work for level 7. Just ideas. I hope it helps and didn’t confuse! :)

I just found your videos as I was researching tgtb LA. I am a little hesitant because of our strong beliefs and reading that the creator Is Mormon. Is there anything hidden in the program that would slowly lead a child to Mormon beliefs? Everyone has an agenda nowadays it seems. Even others like masterbooks, they make it clear that Jesus is God and we need Him and I love them for that but their books can be boring. Tgtb la seems amazing but, does it push any beliefs or ideas about Jesus?

@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 жыл бұрын
I understand your concerns and I had the same questions and avoided TGTB for many years for the same reasons. I also agree with you on masterbooks. I wish their approach was more creative like TGTB. So I personally, had friends from my own church use TGTB curriculum before I did….the high school curriculum in particular and I asked the same thing. So this isn’t just me saying this….there isn’t Mormon doctrine in the curriculum. Their isn’t a lot of deep theology at all (and their couldn’t really be if it’s going to satisfy so many denominations AND Mormonism. What it does have is: 1. Belief that God created the world 2. we should strive for good character (this is emphasized in Mormonism, but also Christianity….it’s just the “why” is different for the religions (it’s a result of salvation vs. being good earns you a higher position with God) but I’ve never the “why” addressed if that makes sense. I’ve been done several language arts with my younger kids also, as well as science and flipped through history (and done a couple of this lessons). I’ve never seen anything strictly Mormon in anything. There are many Christian’s who’ve used this curriculum and said the same thing. I view their curriculum as a resource for a subject, just like books at the library (I don’t look up what their authors believe, but I can tell by the content of the book if we agree.) I haven’t researched every author for every book in my home…..but I look at the content to see if it’s beneficial for my family. Same for this curriculum. They do have a doc on their site that even says where they may have quoted a Mormon, which curriculum it’s in, etc. if I remember correctly, it’s only a few quotes across all of their curriculum. The content of those quotes is what I look at and if it’s problematic. I mean if a scientist is explaining the water cycle, and they happen to be Mormon, does that make their explanation wrong? Thomas Jefferson said many brilliant things, yet I would never endorse his “religion”. He made his own “Christian” Bible, cutting out the parts he didn’t like. But I don’t go to Jefferson for theology lessons, Ultimately, you should do what your conscience allows you to do. I never fault anybody for not wanting to use the curriculum bc of their reservations about it. If your conscience won’t allow you, you shouldn’t use it. My conscience was eased when we tried the free science unit when my oldest was in 8th grade. I saw first hand that it was very high level faith in God’s creation presented. And then somebody I knew and trusted, used the high school curriculum and also said, there was nothing suspicious in it. The books are well known. The poetry is well known. And they ask you to do your own research in some cases. I hope that helps. 😉
