IEW Writing program to Lost Tools of Writing is like comparing apples to oranges! They are so different!
In this first video,
I'm going to go over:
The cost of the Institute for Excellence in writing homeschool curriculum
The cost of The Lost Tools of Writing
The curriculum books and media you may need to complete each of these homeschool writing courses
The goals of each writing curriculum.
HOW THE INSTITUTE FOR EXCELLENCE in WRITING (IEW) curriculum works
My part 2 to this comparison of these middle school and high school homeschool writing programs, will explain how the Lost Tools of Writing Level 1 curriculum works.
When homeschooling a middle schooler or a high schooler, homeschool moms want to make sure we are checking all the boxes off to help our students know not only use proper grammar, but we want to make sure our homeschool high schoolers are equipt with tools for how to think. How do they come up with their own ideas? And then, how do they effectively communicate those ideas? You may find that both of these high school homeschool programs compliment each other very well for those goals!

But I think he’s a popular homeschool speaker and leader (like Andrew Pudewa). Sarah Mackenzie (read aloud revival) mentions him often. He helps present in the videos offered by Lost Tools.

Thank you thank you thank you for this detailed walk through! I’ve been contemplating this for my struggling 6th grader for weeks and this is the best video I’ve found to help me make a decision. I definitely want to go with this one (well….depends after I watch part 2- then I’ll make a final decision!), but then I’ll be stuck with choosing between SSS or a themed. I kinda like the theme because it seems like it could double as history, for example, and just add on to that to make a complete history class….maybe. Anyways, thank you again so much for this video! ❤

I am SOOO glad your going to talk about LTOW. There are very few videos available online that talk about this well. I have this and the videos but am just so unsure of teaching it that we haven’t done it yet. I’m super bummed about that too. I was possibly thinking about signing up for an online class through the Circe institute, so someone could guide my son and I through it. (But those classes are pretty expensive 😐) Anyway I am so looking forward to your next video.
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, so many online classes are expensive. This one, in particular, would be great to have a teacher for. I was lucky enough to experience it through classical conversations. So I can see how it might be intimidating if you were teaching it on your own. But I do feel that LTW is similar to IEW in that is “easy + 1”. It starts out VERY remedial. And builds each unit. In CC, we did 1 unit (or lesson?) over the course of 3 weeks! So if Mom is able, you COULD learn this together with your child. I know sometimes that’s hard if you are also homeschooling other children. There is so much “meat” to talk about with it that I barely scratch the surface and I definitely don’t get to the entire book (because we’ve never done the second half). But even what we’ve done with this program…..is WAY more than I learned in high school or even college!

This is helping me get prepared 😀 Do you recommend watching the teaching videos prior to each lesson, or should I plan to watch them the summer before I use the course?

Great video! I appreciate how detailed you were, because I always hear about IEW, but I've never seen it or really understood what it was. Maybe I missed it or just didn't understand: can you use the themed units WITHOUT doing the structure and style year 1 level B? Or do those have to follow doing the basic "year" first?
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! You CAN use the themed books without the structure and style book. The S&S book is just a general “teacher plan” for any writing assignments. It’s also the seminar book. So if you get the DVDs or the streaming service, it’s the book that follows along with that. But you CAN use the themed books alone. The themes have grade levels on them also.

Ok, so if we are new to IEW then we could start with S&S either A or B to learn the process then move to something themed once we have the S&S down? I have watched a few other videos and then seeing yours, I wasn't sure how you felt about that. By the way, thanks for this awesome video. I was looking at TGATB, then decided against it, and I think we are leaning towards IEW.
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 жыл бұрын
You can do any of the IEW products. Even the themed books will teach the teacher, IMO. (If you have the teachers manual) Having said that….. TEACHING STRUCTURE & STYLE will help you teach any of the IEW products for your student. It really is teaching the teacher, although even a child would benefit from watching the videos. And then iew’s new product is the structure and style where Pudewa himself teaches each student. So there are three options. If you go this route, you need to start with A for whatever grade level your child is at. And honestly, I’ve heard even bumping down a grade if you’re unfamiliar isn’t a bad idea. The only draw back is he is teaching to THAT age group. So if you have a high schooler in the middle school level….Pudewa will teach to middle schoolers. But you could do the free trial and see each level of videos and decide.

First of all, I love your videos because I feel like we literally have the same brain, lol. I have an 8th grader that we pulled from the public school system and didn't realize just how far he'd slipped through the cracks until we started this homeschool journey. We've been using IEW, US history theme, this year and like it well enough to keep going with it. Mind you, I love the idea of LTOW too. You'd mentioned that you use both with your oldest, how do you go about using both in one school year (seems like a whole lot of LA for a school year to do both programs simultaneously)?? Maybe I am confused on what you actually said....can you clarify?
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan Жыл бұрын
we have the same brain….lol! Do you also feel like an outsider that not many think the way you do?!?! 😉 I’m glad you enjoy the videos! I didn’t fully use both. I used ideas from both. So since we’d went through both programs, I felt like we could use what we learned from both in writing papers. So when he was using TGATB high school language arts, whatever paper he had to write, he could utilize IEW techniques for style, for KWO….if he was writing a persuasive paper, you can use the brainstorming ideas and outline ideas from LTW WHILE AT THE SAME TIME using IEW teachings for style and grammar. Did my son do it all perfectly??? No. But this is what I love about homeschooling…..I feel like I myself, am becoming a better student. 😂 if I had to write a paper, it would be AWESOME!!! 😜 and so when I help my kids, i give them stellar ideas and they’d be very well off if they used my ideas. Lol! 😂😎 Seriously though….I’m just talking about bringing all of your education into practical use for any paper. That’s all. 😉I hope that makes sense.

The TEACHING structure & Style binder is the guide for the entire “IEW” process of writing. So my daughter is going to be in 9th grade. When she was in school they used BJU for english/grammer and in 2020 we started homeschoooling and continued with BJU. But now im seeing that her writing especially with essays isnt where it should be. Could I used IEW during the summer just to give her a crash course with writing or what would you suggest?? She admits getting her thoughts to paper is what she struggles so I feel the Lost Tools maybe too deep for right now? Anyway, thoughts and ideas would be most appreciated!!
@OurHOMEschoolPlan

Lost tools actually is great for brainstorming ideas. But this particular level is also more About persuasive arguments. IEW is more about HOW to write any paper and using grammar, etc to make the writing more interesting. I’d look at the IEW free trial and see if that instruction is what you’re looking for. But I’m not sure about a crash course over the summer. Maybe….if all the concepts come easily.

If you want to be taught (as teacher) the “teaching style and structure is universal for all IEW products. In other words, the way all of their products are taught is based on the principles they’ll teach teacher and those come with DVDs geared toward adults. (If you wanted this, you could have your students watch these with you…..) BUT…. You could also just get the themed books, 1 teacher guide, 2 student books and teach your students together. It’s still doable. :) no DVDs for those lessons. Does that make sense.

If you use IEW, you’ll learn with your child. The teachers manual will teach you. Or the videos….you could watch with them. So is IEW Structure and Style taught the same way as the themed curriculum? I’m not sure I understand why you would choose one of those over the other.
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 жыл бұрын
The structured and style is the overall. So yes. If you wanted to have a manual that was “universal” across any theme. What you will not have in it, if you choose a theme workbook for your student, is the answers and additional ideas. If you don’t care about the themed workbooks for your student, then you CAN download writing assignments from the structure and style download codes. Then your students workbook could be the student resource packet and those downloaded assignments. But I’m not sure how many years you could get out of that. So if you plan to keep using this year after year….you might move into the themed writing. And if you, as mom, are already familiar with the process, perhaps you could get by without the themed writing teachers manual. Does that make sense??? But every unit is taught the same techniques.
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 жыл бұрын
Another difference I just thought of between then themed and the structure and style… The themed books plan out what you can do each day (which is nice). They also plan out what style technique to teach and give you ideas for that. Where the structure and style book doesn’t explicitly plan those things out. They style techniques (like -ly adverbs or adding who/which clauses) are in the checklists for each unit. And they are referenced in a tab in the back, but you as teacher kind of have to plan how and when to do that. But the structure and style book goes right along with the DVDs and streaming. So if you’re going to go that route, which I’d recommend bc it would be such a help if this is new to you, then this binder comes with that anyway. It’s the seminar binder. I hope this all makes sense.

@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 2 жыл бұрын
The teaching writing and structure is to TEACH the TEACHER….you CAN have your students do it with you as it does have access to several texts you can practice the techniques on. It’s purpose is once the teacher knows it, you can teach any IEW writing curriculum to your student. If you understood this, you could eventually teach any themed curriculum WITHOUT the teacher’s manual if you preferred because the overall process taught is the same in every IEW writing curriculum. The themed books do not have DVD instruction. BUT… The teacher’s manual is also very good at guiding the teacher through the curriculum so you can help your child. So it is possible to use that with no experience teaching IEW, you just won’t get the in depth explanations and insight…. I hope that makes sense. Also-both of these curriculums is separate from the new style and structure curriculum that has DVDs that teach the student directly. So there are kind of three different WAYS you could use IEW.
