12 to 20 Gauge Shotgun Shell Adapter

A short video showing and demonstrating a 12 to 20 gauge shotgun shell adapter. The adapter is made of steel, I purchased mine from "Intersurplus".

It's certainly not a thing that I "need" as being a handloader I can just load reduced 12 gauge shells, but I was curious to try these fro myself to see how well they performed.

I got some 12-20 and 12-410 inserts from Tradeex a while ago but have never tried them. The idea was to be able to use my stuff if ammo became scarce - backfired on me because the only cheap & easily available ammo is 12 gauge. Looks like the insert works pretty good - possibly worth burning up some 410 to see. Thanks for posting.

I also picked up one of the 410 inserts, probably the same one you got (aluminum construction). I test fired it and it seems to work well enough. With the current price and scarcity of .410 ammo I'm glad I have a .410 MEC loader.

I have one of those made by Short Lane Gun Adapters. I also bought the 20ga to 410ga adapter and the 410ga to 22lr adapter so all 3 adapters will fit inside each other. I've had mine for several years now. They sell these as a kit now called their Stack-N-Pack Kit.

This "no name" adapter is quite a bit lower priced than the Short Lane version, their equivalent is $39.99 US where these sell for $25 Canadian which at the moment is about $18.25 in US funds.

@@314299 Yeah, I noticed the Short Lane adapters went up in price. Seems like everything has been going up in prices. I bought mine several years ago when they were around 50% less than they are today. I used to buy their 8" rifled adapters when they went on sale for 80 bucks or when they had a buy one get 1 at 50% off sale.

@@erg0centric Yeah, because you never know if you're going to stumble onto a stash of 22lr ammo after the zombie apocalypse and all you have is a shotgun and no other way to shoot that 22lr ammo you found.

There were a couple guys at my local skeet club who used the "Little Skeeters" quite a bit, but eventually they moved on to full length tube sets. The six pack set of "Little Skeeters" with two each 12 to 20, 28 & .410 looks like a pretty good deal.

Ballistics on the longer ones are probably better but I like the short ones because they fit into a buttstock pouch or pocket. When I contacted "Little Skeeters" I told them I didn't need 2 of each, because it was for my single shot survival gun project and they were happy to sell me a 6 pack of singles so I got a full set of what I needed. 12/20, 12/28. 12/410, 20/28. 20/410, 28/410 . I have videos on my channel about all these as well as entries on my website. Warning! Some of my videos really suck! haha. 😂@@314299

I have some subcaliber rifled adapters for the 12 and 20 gauges. I think 9mm, 45, and .22 lr, but I might have a .38 special as well. Don't use them that often, but they're fun to play with.

Are yours the style with the rubber "O" rings that keep the insert centered in the chamber?

So far just tried my "target" level 7/8 ounce reloads in it, I should dig around in my loose 20 ga shells to see if there are a few 3" I could try in it.

I'm not sure about Canadian law, but they make adapters that can fit pistol rounds.

Yeah we have those up here, I have one that I got many years ago for 38/357 in 12 ga.

you got into that last one!!....just a tought when you said recoil felt the same.....might be interesting over a chrono to see....but i get it not that big a deal.... great video as always!!

Yeah I did manage to connect a bit better with the last one. I only had a handful of clays so I really did not get a chance to warm up. I hope to try some patterning and crono with these at some point. It's good to hear from you, be nice to get the lads together at the skeet club to shoot under the lights again one of these evenings.

Does anyone know where I can get longer rifled adaptors for the 20 gauge x-caliber M6? I have the chaszel 9mm, 380 ACP and 38 super. They are great, but I'd like to get more options especially closer to the 18" my 3 are. It's extremely aggravating to find some. It took a long time just to track down the piece itself and had no idea it would be so hard to find adapters. I got the 20 gauge for a little less weight and packability of potential long range hikes. More than happy with the piece itself and all three adapters, just want more. Shooters box and shortlane only have the short adapters for 20 gauge

I suppose if one were enamored with a break open 12ga, or awash in 20ga shells, it would have a good bit of utility. Probably pass on slugs though!

It think the main utility with these is their ability to use lower power shells and loads with that have less recoil. Those of us who hand load shot shells can assemble the equivalent of a 20 gauge load in a 12 gauge hull, but for the non hand loader who may only have a 12 gauge it is an option. As for slugs, yeah I expect these adapters would be pretty useless unless at extreme close range.

Rifled adapters are more accurate, and the more length, the better on accuracy. I just wish short lane charged less really cool, though

I have an old 38/357 rifled 12 ga adapter, it is not very accurate either but it is just chamber length.

@314299 I have a 22lr rifle adapter it's about 6 inches long it pretty accurate with in reason I mostly squirrel hunt with it can't take longer shots but just for day to day its ok cool video 👍

@@familyman1110 I think the big issue with most rifled adapters is if they fit tight or not. The ones with "O" rings ought to be decent if they fit snugly.
