Interesting with the velocities but for some reason the shorter barrels seem to perform as good or better as the magnum load seems to dump all its energy into 13 to 16 inch barrels. At 12 feet there would be a bit of loss but generally the longer barrel is no advantage. I shoot a semi-auto Volquartsen with a 13.5 inch barrel and is still putting up better velocities than what you have here. Anyway, good shooting. R

Sorry to ruin your "Gotcha!" moment, but at no time did I say Lee introduced these sets twenty five years. I said , and I quote from the video "Lee precision has been manufacturing these loaders for probably 45 years or so." . This video was made and posted over ten years ago, so that would put my estimated time of introduction at 55 years ago. This was of course a very rough off the cuff "guestimate" on my part. According to the Lee website "Lee Loaders, for rifle and pistol ammunition, were invented in the early sixties" so that makes the product range 60 or more years old.

Am 75- now... ALL those years, l thought the BOLT ACTION RIFLE HAVE more velocities.. That was WHY the Snipers preferred the BOLT ACTION RIFLES😮😢😭
@314299
@314299 11 күн бұрын
The reason why bolt action rifles were preferred for many years as sniper rifles was their superior accuracy as compared to semi-autos of the time. Most infantry rifles (M1 Garand, SVT-40, FN-FAL, H&K G-3) were simply not capable of the same level of accuracy as the bolt actions of the time. This began to change with match tuned service rifles like the M-14, but really changed when AR-10 based rifles began to be built for "sniper" purposes. The AR-10/AR-15 system can achieve excellent accuracy rivaling that of bolt actions, and being capable of instant follow up shots gives it capability exceeding that of bolt actions.

THE TRUTH. Energy on target is the difference. SOMEONE SHOULD BE MAKING 65-75 GRAIN 22 WMR THAT HAS SPEEDS JUST UNDER THE SOUND BARRIER FOR TOTAL ENERGY PERFORMANCE. BUT INSTEAD ALL I SEE IS 700 FPS OR SO WHICH IS POORLY UNDER LOADED AND FAR FROM MAXING OUT A SUBSONIC ROUNDS ENERGY WHICH COULD BE ACHIEVED BY MAKING AMMO JUST UNDER THE FPS OF THE SOUND BARRIER. I THINK THE MAIN REASON NO ONE MAKES PROPER SUBS FOR 22 WMR IS THAT IT IS NOT POPULAR. A 60 TO 75 GRAIN BULLET WOULD PROBABLY BE A GREAT DOWNRANGE QUIET ENERGY ON TARGET ROUND AT SAY 1070 FPS COMPARED TO THESE WEAKER 22 WMR SUBSONIC ROUNDS THAT SHOOT WAY TO SLOW IN THE 700 TO 900 FPS RANG
@314299
@314299 11 күн бұрын
If they could make money by making and selling 65-75 grain 22 WMR I expect they would be doing so. I expect accuracy with such a load would be quite "iffy", especially at any distance, much as it is with many rifles in .22 LR when shooting the Aguila SSS load. For those wanting a heavy bullet in 22 WMR Federal makes a 50 grain, that is 25% heavier than the standard 40 grain.

Very advisable video, it is best to use quality once fired reclaimed hulls as your start point such as Win AA or Rem Gun club, the pleats are better formed and good crimps are of the norm as you keep loading them over and over. also, as you said, the crimping station takes a bit getting used to as you develop a "Feel" for if your load is the right Hight. However, that "feel" stays with you even if you get another machine like a MEC. On another subject, I'm surprised that you don't make your own shot. I believe you told me that you have someone at the club that does and you get it from him. - Dave

Fine example of English craftmanship, even the war issue Enfield series of rifles are wonderfully made, lots of fine machining, and relief cuts in their receiver's, the sights are hashed so that they do not reflect light, (Well, late guns during WW-2 were just rifles to fulfill the need and production could not afford all the fancy stuff) all thing's that are from a bygone area of quality that was expected of manufacturing. I love the Lee rifles in the way they were made, they are Nice guns - Dave

The 26 grains load was pretty impressive, people have to take into account that these bullets cost mostly time to make, however the dollar amount is penny's per bullet, the accuracy you can get from experimentations can rival any custom jacketed bullet out there. I really like this type of content, it shows that with a little work (If you can call it that because a majority of people enjoy casting and such) you can get fine accuracy that fills 95% of our shooting. peace - Dave
@314299
@314299 15 күн бұрын
Looking back the good group with the 26 grain load could just have been a random occurrence. I'm surprised it shot that well considering the chronograph numbers. I really should load some more up and see if it's repeatable or if it was just a fluke. Speaking of consistency I was out the other day with my 30/06 Howa 1500 trying some RCBS 30-165-SIL bullets with Accurate 5744 powder. That powder gives amazing consistent velocities with cast bullets, firing over twenty shots the standard deviation was just 10 FPS. It would have made for interesting video but the range was just too busy to film.

@wattlebough 17 күн бұрын
The question I’ve been looking for in the comments is, you mentioned you might get up to 3 to 5 reloads using other methods: if reloading using this tool prolongs cartridge life, how many reloads could you expect using the Lee Reloader Set?
@314299
@314299 16 күн бұрын
Like many things, it depends on mostly on a couple of factors The firearm used makes a difference, brass used in a P-14 tends to last longer than that used in Lee Enfield rifle. Another factor is how "hot" the load is, brass loaded with a milder load will last longer. It is pretty safe to predict at least ten to twenty loading when using a Lee Loader.

I hate to say it you’re not an old-time caster. You take a candle to the mold and carbon the whole mold with the candle that will release anything that’s in the mold and you won’t have a problem banging on it.🧐
@314299
@314299 15 күн бұрын
So I'm not an "old-time caster" am I? Well, I've been casting for close to 40 years at this point. Yes I'm quite aware of smoking molds and have done it myself to aluminum molds, however a good quality mold used with good alloy/temperature does not NEED to be smoked. Iron molds should never be smoked. Aluminum ones like the Lee products sometimes work better if smoked, but smoking a poorly made, defective mold like the one in the video will not magically cure it. I have dozens of Lee molds and for the most part they are satisfactory, but this one was a piece of junk that should not have been allowed out of the factory.

M1891 Carcano rifle barrels have Progressive Rifling meaning that the base with the exposed lead bottom will expand midway to the middle of the barrel and squeeze through till it exits the barrel. This is not new, the 1891 Carcano barrel came from the 19th Century barrel system to the Minie bullet to where the base expands to grasp the rifling starting big from the top of the mouth as the brass casing's neck and shoulder expand to seal the gasses so there is minimal gases blowing back through the chamber into the rifleman. The Carcano in my opinion had the split designed receiver like the German M1888 with dual lug for safety and strength. The long 6.5mm diameter long slender bullet was designed to expand at the base supported by the long jacket to cruise through the rifling as it gets smaller as it exits and have a stable flight to it's target. During the late 1890s, barrels of German, Austrian, French, Scandinavian countries had same bore diameter designs from mouth to crown to deliver consistent accuracy with one standard. The Italians through Salvatore Carcano had designed the Italian Army's rifles using the Progressive Rifling system dating back to the Black Powder Era, thinking that with much more better powders using an expandable base and Progressive Rifling would enhance accuracy. The only Italian Army formations that complained about this before WWI and after was the Bersaglieri and the Alpini Mountain troops who are above marksman from the Italian conscript infantry. The Italian Army never corrected this because producing more rifles and ammo means they can arm more troops to fight the Austrians and Germans in Northern Italy.
@314299
@314299 15 күн бұрын
I take issue with your statement that the bullet "base with the exposed lead bottom will expand". No it wont. Unless radically "cupped" at the base there is no way a jacketed bullet will expand at the base as the jacket is just too thick to allow that. Also the jacket at the base is rolled in to reinforce the bullet.
