12 Valve Cummins DIY Head removal

In this video I am going to pull the head off my 5.9 cummins. This is a 12 valve cummins, which means its an all mechanical engine, making it a perfect candidate for an engine swap into my 1997 ford! Full disclosure, I have never done this before so were going to learn together.

Nice job I'm currently working on a 1995 12v Cummins out of a fl 80 freightliner truck blown head gasket and head and block was .015 out of flat I used an oversize gasket new head bolts and torqued left stick 215 hp no mods worked. But if you are planning on more power I would have it machined. The cheapest Machinist wanted 1500 to machine the heading back the motor only cost me Junior $50 being that it was burning antifreeze so I took the gamble when we went oversized gasket and it worked nice job keep up the good work

Yeah mine needs to go to the machine shop. I don’t want to spend all the money on go fast parts only to have a warped head that won’t hold power

This is definitely interesting to me. I even thought of possibly swapping a Cummins into my 6.0, but I also just bought a 6.8 v10 with 156k, so I may just run the v10. But I'm deff looking forward to the next video in this series! 👍👍

I have a 96 Dodge 4-wd, 1-ton. with the 5.9 and it just turned 65,000 miles so I've never seen the pistons. I did fix the killer dowel pin, and lost 5th gear on the NV4500 which was an easy fix. Other than that no plans for it other than take good care. Will check out your updates.

Gonna re-do the flatbed, decking is a little rotten but otherwise the cab and chassis is god original, no rust or dents.

i would say the majority of the ''blown headgaskets'' were caused by the original head bolts loosening off over a long period of time, a couple older guys turned me onto that issue, once i get one of these motors i immediately go over the head bolts and see what there at, a lot of the time they are well under 100ftlbs each, ive seen guys go over them all and stop external coolant leaks all together. Id say you were extremely lucky as well to get all the exhaust manifold bolts off without snapping one off, someone forsure had that off already with the miss matched bolt head sizes, those are original pistons as well and they all look fine from what i can see.

I kinda figured someone snapped one off and had to drill and tap a new hole. Didn't seem right that Cummins would put different bolts in from the factory
