This video is a look at some of the most common and difficult grips you’ll encounter in the gi game. Strong grips can be stifling, really disrupting your movement and threatening with sweeps and submissions. Knowing how to shut these grips down is tantamount to knowing how to effectively attack with them.
Here is a breakdown of the contents of this video from various positions, standing and ground, of the grips you’re likely to experience and how to shut them down.
• The Taylor Swift Lapel Break
• Knuckles-in Lapel Break
• Cross Collar Grip Mitigation
• Label Grip Strip
• Sleeve Grip Twist Break
• Knee Assisted Sleeve Grip Break
• Hip Bump Grip Break
• Radial Assist Grip Break
• Pant Grip Kick Strip
• Cross Side Kick Strip
• Cross Collar Duck Under
• X-Choke Defense
I hope you like these and get some good use from them for your training and competition. Let me know if you have questions about any others that I left out of this video.

I signed up for my first Gi school the end of last year and collectively I’ve already attended 5 classes--not as much as I’d hoped but I intend to go more often--however, our school doesn’t allow new students to roll until their 5th class. Yesterday was my first roll and it was insane how grips play an important part of the GI game. I rolled with this young and talented blue belt and he had me stuck with his strong grips, I could not get away from this kid! 😂 He manages to tap me with an AB, but where I sincerely struggled was him controlling me with his grips, I couldn’t break one of them and now I’m here. I also need to practice my grip grabs and just curious to see how all this works. Thanks for posting, this will help tremendously!

You are definitely correct that there are levels to this. If I could add something to the standing portion, generally grips that are broken with two hands leave larger gaps that are explainable by someone who is knowledgeable in takedowns, trips and throws. Whenever possible, use one-on-one breaks and use the freehand to establish or maintain control of your opponent's shoulders or balance. Another important thing with standing grip breaks is do them quickly. Do not allow them time to figure out what you were planning or how to improve their situation while you are improving yours.
@jsl8461
@jsl8461 4 жыл бұрын
I was just about to say the same thing (at least for the standup portion). I used to think one handed grip breaks were bogus moves, only suitable for genetic freaks with crazy strong triceps. Then IJF banned two handed breaks in 2013, and within a year every professional judo athlete had learned to break collar grips one-handed. That made me realize that pretty much anyone can do it on a similar sized opponent, as long as the timing is good. The best time is right as they grab, before their grip hardens. Other good triggers are when they're distracted by one of your attacks, and when they are adjusting their grip to improve their position. Offensively, it is so much better to break with one hand than it is to break with two hands. You get to keep your strong grip with your other hand, and you can attack immediately after the break. That being said, two handed grip breaks are still best for beginners. One handed breaks are definitely more for advanced practitioners, it takes much better timing and also more explosiveness to break with one hand.

@@jsl8461 correct. to someone who understands with they're looking at, a 2 handed break is a gift And pretty much a free throw

Could you adapt these to regular clothing
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 4 жыл бұрын
You could...but there would be some contextual issues that would need to be addressed. These are all for a grappling opponent whose intention is to control you with the grip to off balance, pin or throw you. If someone is grabbing your regular clothing, it means it’s a self defense situation, and probably with intent to strike or worse. So the strategies and defensive options would need to shift focus from just breaking the grip probably.

Depends if you grab my cheap t-shirt or if you a well made colored shirt/jacket. Situations vary but the cheep shirt could possibly be pulled up to blind someone and a jacket would be used just like a gi.

What’s the best way to break the guard players pistol grips while in his open guard standing or combat base or even closed guard
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 3 жыл бұрын
The best way is don’t let them get the grips. But if they do, explosively break the grips either twisting break or deadlift break. If you can’t break them, at least anchor the grips they have by getting pant grips of your own on them. All kind of hard to explain here, but that’s my take on it.
