Incredible talent. I just hope she can stay clear of eating disorders, overtraining and abusive or incompetent coaches that so many super talented young runners fall victim to, so she can reach her potential as an adult, physically and mentally.

Do some runners develop eating disorders? In what way?

@@Speedofsound9 its surprisingly common in female athletes. I think it has to do with being too aggressive with reaching a target race weight

@@Speedofsound9 There's a big advantage to being light in distance running, and it can be very tempting to push it too far. Chronic underfueling can work in the short term, but it's always paid for in injuries and burnout in the longer term - and sometimes even more serious life limiting issues EDs are particularly common among young female runners, and because of this you find that many of the fastest adult female runners weren't exceptionally quick during their high school years, and vice versa. The teen runners who eat well give themselves the best chance to develop into fast, resilient adults - but couldn't quite compete with the super skinny whippets who were starving themselves through puberty, but whose bodies don't fully develop as a result. Unfortunately some coaches even encourage it or bully their young athletes in to unhealthy dieting to benefit from their short term success. There's a special place in hell for them.

I'm a runner, an avid runner, run up to 10 miles a day and run close to a 20 min 5k, I jumped in a 5k new years eve race in Virginia and I ran very hard, but when we got to the turn around point, I saw that this tiny child was killing most of us. I finished the 5k in like 22 mins, but later found out that the child was 9 years old and beat me by several minutes. Yep I was crushed by a 9 year old, and I was sprinting at the end and barely held off a 12 year old. I don't know what little kids are eating nowadays, but damn! LMAO! 🤣

This time is also world leading time for 13 years old. But this list over world leading time dont include all countries. Could be some africans with better times.

This race is called Lierløpet and is hosted in my hometown Lier in Norway. The course they ran is not really that hilly, but it’s a bit rough and has a lot of sharp turns. I have ran the same stretch many times, although not nearly as fast as she did. It is absolutely insane how she ran so fast. I would also like to add that Karoline Grøvdal also set a new 5k Norwegian road race record on the same course, so it hosted two new Norwegian records this year.

A top video and shows what our kids can achieve when we are not expecting it. 20 years ago my son did an incredible swimming achievement gaining him the Australian title for freestyle. It was a 50 m race and he entered at his best time which got him into line 8 in the first heat. He took off .5 of the second and after three heats he was in the final race. In that race, the other competitors were of his first heat time basically being all equal. I watched him with his team and he was just focused and not mingling with his teammates. In the final, he took another .5 from his previous time making that one second.

Was looking for a comment like this to express my whole hearted belief. I am 15 and have been running 10 years competitively, 13 years total. I have seen so many “good” runners come and go. Have placed second in XC states, gone to national meets, or small local 5ks so I've seen a lot. What I notice is it's the way people train nowadays. Was just talking to a solid competitor of mine in recent years and he got a stress fracture. He won't be competing for a while and most likely will go like the rest of them and be unremarkable. They will get fast times quickly, but they cannot maintain them over the years. Still impressive, but notice it's on a road (perfect surface) and wearing supershoes. My PR is 15:07 ON GRASS AND HILLS and it's going to continue to improve. My teammates also have this instant success mindset and it's not good. They aren't improving and over the long run have actually gone backwards.

Bruh, she's just 12, a lot can change in 10 yeras from now. She might fall in love, go to college and do million other thing that would interfere with her running career (if we can call it that) and just stop running altogether. Now she's the best in her age group but as she gets older she will have to compete against other incredibly gifted girls which means she will need to run her but off just to stay competitive - statistically, not many people are going to choose a running career over many other more lucrative avenues of life when faced with this challenge.
@moaningpheromones
@moaningpheromones 7 ай бұрын
Well the trick is how does she progress from here? Is she on a trajectory of quicker and quicker times towards low 14s in 4-6 years or is she going to hit a plateau much sooner? It's a long way to low 15s, as good as she is. Girls develop faster as well, and she could be just super fast at getting most of her growth now, without much to go. You don't see much about the top women runners in terms of what times they could run at age 11-16. A lot don't even start running until then so there's less to compare. What does she weigh - 35kg? 30kg? Might get a bit harder unless she tops out at 40kg. Shivers.

It’s a great time for a 12 year old. I’m genuinely not sure a kid this young should be able to do this - normally I’d expect young people of this age to be on the track getting fast over the shorter distances, not running the miles needed to get fast over a 5k. I just hope it doesn’t affect her longevity in the sport.

That speed was pretty much my ceiling, I ran (within the margin of the final sprint lap) exactly the same speed in the army 3K test two years later, and on a 17K road run the same year: I.e. about 17-17,5 km/h.

Running doesn't really work that way. The reason super fast kids tend not to go on to achieve incredible feats is simply because they have been given physical advantages at an earlier age. It's not down to lack of desire. Kids need to get through ages 13-17 and then see where they are. Things tend to even out. And then, at around that age, the real talent starts to show, when aerobic and anaerobic ability combines and times start tumbling. For boys, it's not uncommon to see lads who were running 19 or so for 5k, push that down to 15/16 minutes in the space of 18 months. They just take off. The one thing that can be tough for the fast youngsters is that all of a sudden everyone catches up to them (literally).

As someone who ran cross country as conditional for track that’s a very impressive time . I do wonder , however at what age do the East African girls take up competitive running , so I have no point of comparison for elite girls at that age .

I'm starting to get more and more confused on how kids that are not even hitting puberty yet are getting 5ks sub 17 and 18 nowadays. And it seems like it's happening EVERYwhere I TURN. Is the world actually more fit than back in the 1950s and people lied to us about the modern people being lazy nowadays? Or is the technology really that good? Well, whatever it is, it's pretty crazy how young these kids are getting these fast times.
@pavolhorvath7850

It is due to understanding of physiology and training methods. If you look back to 1950s, how runners trained, it was really ineffective and stupid.

Kids are no more or less fit. Running is more popular. Parkrun means everyone is timed. Fast, flat road races. My personal bug bear is super shoes. No kid should be running in carbon plated Vaporflys.

@@user-ss2cz4be6q I've personally never used any modern super shoes until more recently when I tried it out for a 3 mile tempo run and a 2 mile race, and they weren't vapor or ahplaflys, they were nova blast. Most of the time I use normal non super shoes, and I'm planning to get a pair of barefoot shoes or whatever those are called. I want to strengthen my feet so when I DO use the super shoes I'll have a big advantage and it will help a lot.
