You are amazing to even pursue a repair as bad as the board is! I trust you called the customer and told him it was going to be a very costly repair! You are the best. Brave man taking that one on, anything is fixable with time, effort and cost…but I would of refused to even look at it after seeing the reg placed on top of the other, right away I thought burned traces, then the other work was bodged, yeah a brave man Peter, well done, you fixed a pig and made it a king.

Peter, you are honestly a saint. Most people would have handed that radio back to the owner and said "No Thanks" or simply told them they needed to order a new board. You stuck with it and turned a sows ear into a silk purse of a repair. That really was some amazing work and shows what you will go through to fix something before giving up. If I might ask, what would a repair like this cost?? It must be less than a new board but I am wondering how much less. Sad to see such a great radio damaged to that extent but its great to see that you were able to bring it back to life. I would love to have one of these. Thanks again for the wonderful video! 73 de N0BPS

I dropped the control head for my 857D into a bucket of water, and dirty socks. I got very lucky. The radio would not talk to the ATAS 120D antenna before my accident, but after it's bath, and a quick clean & dry, it has been working fabulously well. I used some German cigarette papers to soak the water out of the display. I went and bought more of those German papers, for that reason. They work great for soaking water out of tight places.

Hello Peter! Thank you for the great and interesting videos! I learned so many from them! I have Yaesu FT-857D and i love it very much, i use it in different bands. But i was very upset that on 2-m and 70-band it has not so good reception of RF, like on others bands. I know that electrical part for 2-m and 70-cm bands in FT 857d simple and not the best. But i am sure that with your help we will be able to revise and possibly to make it better. What can you advice to check and possibly change in scheme to make the reception of RF signal on 2-m and 70 -cm bands better ? I checked and compare the reception of 2-meter RF signal on FT-857 with Quasheng UV2-plus radio and to my surprise the reception of RF on Quansheng uv2-plus with external antena (superheterodyne too) is looks better (less noise and better hearing of weak remote stations). I hope to get the advice from you to make FT-857D work better here.

Hello Peter, I just bought an 857D with some issues to fix and love to see your videos to learn! I’ve noticed a very curious coincidence between that radio and mine. Next to the regulator there’s a inductor. In between, on the board, there’s a small piece of tape with some white paste. Also there’s a small smd resistor on the corner of the variable can which goes to gnd. According to the board layout there’s nothing like that. Well, my 857 has the very same thing. Couldn’t find anything on internet. Wondering what that is? If you or anyone else could tell me what that is I’ll appreciate. Thank you! Best wishes Diego

Great repair. Nice job relocating the 5v regulator like that, very professional. I'm assuming you let the owner know that there's no guarantee, as anything can happen when a multi-layer pcb gets damaged like that. Interesting that the person(s) who worked on it before were smart enough to cut away the damaged part of the pcb without shorting the ground layer, but not smart enough to route the missing 5v supply, and also why the heck would they mess with the alignment like that?
@TRXLab7 жыл бұрын
